AMERICAblog: Tina Fey on Sarah Palin and sexism

  • Sacanagem · 12 months ago
I still think that priest trashing Obama in Modesto is gayer than I am. And that's pretty damn gay.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
now now... let's not get into the "I'm way gayer than he is" thing.

that's best left to metrosexuals :-)
  • Patrick_Bateman · 12 months ago
we've all been taught that "you don't hit a girl."

Let's teach our kids not to hit anyone, period.
  • jd_nyc · 12 months ago
Not exactly John, it's that you don't hit pretty girls. And you don't hit mothers. And a pretty girl who's also a mom? Well, that's like hitting Mother Mary.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
it all goes back to not throwing stones at prostitutes I think.
  • DeppFan · 12 months ago
Palin gave as good as she got. Her "Palling around with terrorists" routine was low. Right out of the gate, when she and Rudy Ghouliani sarcastically derided "community organizers" then dealt countless other low blows, she begged for exactly what she received.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
yeah... but for some reason, you're expected to stand there and take abuse if its from a woman. If you fight back (even verbally) you're a big bully.

whatever, the first time a woman hits me? she's gonna wind up with a black eye... although, some of the women I know could beat the crap outta me.

same goes for verbal abuse, if they dish it out... they better damn well be able to take it.

I don't buy into the "weaker sex" thing at all... I haven't met anyone like June Cleaver in my life, and I don't think they exist to the extent that the MSM would have you believe.

I find the perpetuation of the 'weaker sex' image to be quite sexist.

    .
  • Monitor_One · 12 months ago
As a whole, women are not as strong as men. Now, having said that, any woman knows if she swings at a guy, he just might swing back.
Better to turn her in to the cops.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
true, as a whole... if you're talking about how much I can benchpress as opposed to sarah palin? yeah, I'm probably stronger.

but making physical strength the 'essence' of strength? I find that sexist. Truely, I believe the GOP believes that though... sarah palin was a gimmick.

that's pretty much what I meant, the whole phrase "weaker sex" is about an image... it might've started out years ago about physical strength... now its outdated. and in the political realm? what has physical strength got to do with anything?

the gop likes to use that 'delicate flower' thing when it works, and charge sexism if anyone else uses it.... OR points out the GOP use of it.
  • Rob Mule · 12 months ago
Oh Lordy, tell me about the "mean" line!
My quick gay tongue has been nailed to that cross thousands of times so I think we all know where Tina's coming from on this.
The 'Thank you Sarah" web commercials shown on cable nooz and nowhere else generically thanked Sarah "for standing up to those who would smear and destroy you" or as they are more commonly known in politics, the opposition.
Sarah should remember Americans love people who can make them laugh in these hard times not people who make them wince.
  • Scott · 12 months ago
    Thank you!

Whether it's a post on my little blog, or commenting on another blog, gay activists tend to treat gays with a sense of humour as some pariah. I guess to them, comedy, satire or being sarcastic is only acceptable if it's coming from a hetero person, or Margaret Cho.

As if Margaret Cho is funny.
  • Ben Dover · 12 months ago
All the nasty, ugly, horrible things I've said, and continue to say about Caribou Barbie, is not because of her gender. I couldn't care less if she were male, female, or magically sprouted two complete sets from both genders.

I despise her because of her ignorance and the great pride she seemingly takes in remaining ignorant.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
exactly, a female george w bush.

is there any reason that's better for picking on her? it has nothing to do with her sex.

Where on earth do they get this crap? How about some hard hitting news about her hate mongering regarding Obama? Never heard anything hard hitting about that.

Noticed today it looks like the RNC did her up again for her stump speech in GA.
  • Buford · 12 months ago
I disagree - the fact is that it is easy to make fun of white men in power because they are the standard. For any person in a postion of power who also fits into a category that is protected from discrimination - women, minorities, etc... - subjecting them to the same type of satire and ridicule as the 'standard' white males will be a senistive subject, and will remain so until we achieve mroe balance in the make-up of our leadership.
  • Teresa · 12 months ago
hey, good job.... someone who understands the power structure and why some things are sexist/and or racist and some are not. Thank you
  • randy756 · 12 months ago
The only time I saw sexism about Palin was when the news spent the better part of 2 days on how much her clothes cost? Do we not think that McCain, Biden and Obama all had suits on off the rack? Other than that I think all other attacks were fair.
  • Older_Wiser · 12 months ago
That wasn't sexism because it wasn't particularly about the clothes; it was about the money, and who provided it. Shady at best.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
the only reason you knew how much her clothes cost (and this was relevent) was that the RNC PAID for them.

the phrase 'putting lipstick on the pig' wasn't sexist either... dressing up a country bumpkin and teaching them how to speak in complete sentences DOES NOT make them presidental material (not VP, president... as that's what the VP is there for). Hence, pointing out that they spent $150,000 on her wardrobe proved the point that they (mccain's campaign/ the RNC) didn't think she dressed up to snuff for the job.

she was qualified in every way except her wardrobe?? c'mon, the hypocrisy in suggesting that the points made about her wardrobe were sexist should've been news in itself.

but the gop attacked and labeled any counter-attack 'sexist'.
  • Monitor_One · 12 months ago
I am pretty sure the guys didn't clothe their entire family on contributions. If they had, they would have been singled out as well.
  • slappymagoo · 12 months ago
Fey's also selling herself short. It sexist to HER, because it implies that she doesn't know what she's doing. She's just a girl who was being used by men to tell their mean sexist jokes about Palin. It must be true, after all, Palin was used by men to tell their awful racist/xenophobic jokes about Obama.

The idea that Fey is an accomplished writer, who was head writer on SNL for years and an Emmy winner for her own show, is lost on the thunderdolts who'd cry sexism. And perhaps it's NOT REALLY lost. After al, you can't cry "sexism" if a woman is beating up on a woman, especially if the woman giving the beating is smaller than her target, not an accomplished hunter, less physically imposing (in other words, if it came to an actual physical brawl twixt those two, that's the only time my money would be on Palin). So people who had nothing to do with anything have decided, facts be damned, that Fey was used to tell jokes men wrote about Palin, and she's too much of a stupid girl to know how she was being used and owes Palin an apology.

Meanwhile, off-topic but nonetheless hilarious, according to "Our Country Deserves Better," Palin still knows how to pack 'em in:

GEORGIA -- Thousands turned out today for a rally led by Gov. Sarah Palin in support of Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss. The stakes are high: if Chambliss losses (sic), the Republican Party will lose the ability to filibuster, which is the last card the GOP has to play to stop any reckless policy proposals by Democrats. (Note: Because we're all so sure no Blue Dog Democrats will ever support a GOP filibuster, lord knows we have a long history of being brave in the face of GOP obstructionism)

This effort marks the first step in the fight to take back Congress from the far Left in the 2010 elections. The Our Country Deserves Better Committee has been on the front lines of the national battle for the future of our country: we were a very public advocate on behalf of Gov. Sarah Palin, praising the conservative Republican leader in a national television ad campaign, while also helping to provide funding for Sen. Saxby Chambliss' battle against Democrat Jay Martin.

These are just two small steps in what will be a very long journey towards the 2010 congressional elections. Barack Obama and his allies in the far Left spent over 2 1/2 years preparing for this past election -- fundraising and organizing day-in and day-out for that period of time. (Note: While apparently the GOP was all too busy doing...what, exactly?)

We must do the same to achieve victory in 2010.

You can do your part with a contribution of $25, $50, $100 or $250 to the Our Country Deserves Better Committee - it will be an important investment for our country's future.

And if you prefer you can mail in your donation to our finance office:

A lot of the material Tina used came from Bible Spice herself!
  • Older_Wiser · 12 months ago
Oh come on! Clinton has used her vast intelligence to fight sexism and not just for herself; it's evident in the way she raised Chelsea. The Aryan Idiot takes any criticism as "sexist" and hides behind it; it's also obvious in the way she raised Bristol.

    Big difference.
  • MikeinSanJo · 12 months ago
Heh! If you grow up with an older sister, you learn it's absolutely OK to hit a girl. Maybe you don't start it, but you definitely can finish it.

And any guy who won't defend himself (physically or otherwise) against a girl because she's a girl deserves exactly what he gets. Who's ever stood there and let a girl kick him in the balls because he "didn't think she'd really do it"?

    ;-)
  • Older_Wiser · 12 months ago
Too many women confuse aggression with assertion. That's the difference between a woman who's a feminist and one who's just trying to act like a man. After all, in being assertive, you have to use your brain, not your brawn as you do in being aggressive. And many women are just passive-aggressive.

A passive-aggressive woman will stay with her tormenter; an assertive woman will get a lawyer and kick him out.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
I never hit my older sister... tried a few times, but never succeeded.

then I discovered, her buttons... it was easier to push her buttons with a level voice than get violent.

unfortunately, pushing her buttons usually resulted in HER getting violent.
  • Monitor_One · 12 months ago
As a long time feminest, the only sexism I saw was by the Republican Party, keeping Palin away from serious questions.
The Party treated her like fluff and complained she was viewed as fluff.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 12 months ago
    PERFECTLY stated Karol!!

interesting that they wanted her portrayed as a 'pitbull with lipstick'... but treated her like a delicate flower.
  • Jeremy Buff · 12 months ago
They really did treat her badly, but she was very untested and didn't know the ropes. This does not only happen to women, it happens to many inexperienced candidates in politics. It's the way the gears turn. Also, if that's all the sexism you say, then I question your level of comprehension because there is no way in hell you can honestly say that and call yourself a feminist. Selective feminist, possibly.
  • hawkseye · 12 months ago
As always, the MSM provides an undercurrent of "is she femme" or "is he butch" but that was the extent of it in my opinion.
    Agree with AA Karol below.
  • Ben Dover · 12 months ago
Apparently Caribou Barbie "forgot" to return some of those clothes that the RNC bought for her.
She's sportin' some of the same fancy duds while campaigning for ol' Saxby Chamblis...

  • teresaInPa · 12 months ago
Dear, it was not just the GOP. You guys have a lot to learn about actual liberal feminist women. Many many of us also saw the attacks on Palin as sexist. In fact some of us were so disgusted we vote for her... and no, choice is NOT the only issue to women. So do not bother telling me that she stands against everything that is important to women's lives.

what Palin was not was experience in running for office on the federal level. She was not polished and she was not prepared to be a candidate. But in terms of actual governing experience, well she has more than Obama.
Now I may be against a lot of her agenda, but the fact that you all dismiss the obsession with her clothes and her looks and calling her barbie etc...as being anything other than sexist fills me with despair. I wonder if you know that this is no better than 75 percent of black women voting for prop 8 in CA?
It seems that we all live in our own little bigoted minority ghettos and think nothing of trashing the other folks just trying to get some equality in the straight white male kingdom we occupy.
  • MGBYG · 12 months ago
Please enlighten us and share 5 examples of exact sexism towards Gov. Palin, by Liberals, in the last 60 days.

    1.
    2.
    3.
    4.
    5.

Or, at least, don't drop reverse-sexist crap and walk away.
  • Jeremy Buff · 12 months ago
You know, I'd reply to this if my comment would get approved!
  • teresaInPa · 12 months ago
See my other comments PS I don't do command performances
  • ivyfree · 12 months ago
Oh please. I'm so sick of Palin being defended as having more governing experience than Obama. Clinton was a governor. Bush was a governor. It doesn't have anything to do with whether or not somebody has experience, but what they make of their experience. Palin has spent 44 years of her life and all she's learned is to wink at the camera. She's ignorant. She could have spent her political career growing and learning. No: she can deliver a rehearsed speech, and then wink. I proudly did not vote for her.
  • Jeremy Buff · 12 months ago
The fact that you say "Puhlease" in the dismissal of the fact that Palin was the victim of sexism is absolutely absurd! Things were brought up about Palin that would never be brought up in the negativity which it was if it was a male instead- her clothes, her children, her family, her past jobs.

You have some serious cognitive dissonance problems man. Look it up, you'll learn a little something about yourself.
  • IAmATVJunkie · 12 months ago
Edwards' haircut. McCain's shoes. Billy Carter. Obama's job as a community organizer.

But wait, Jeremy Buff, there's more!

W's tenure as an oil speculator. Bill Clinton's wife. Rudy Giuliani's multiple divorces. Mitt's great grandfather's multiple marriages.

All made reference to in a negative manner during campaigns.

Oh, and John, every now and then when I send you an article it would be great if you could say something like:

"Sent by friend of the blog Joe Bua, visit him at http://iamatvjunkie.typepad.com."
  • Jeremy Buff · 12 months ago
Oh great! You're real good at completely missing the point. You speak of one thing that happened to each candidate. Any candidate faces issues like you listed above, but NO one faced the sexism- and the amount of sexism- that Palin faced. Stop skirting around the facts. Sure, McCain/Palin would have lost anyway- but that's not the point, not even close.
  • IAmATVJunkie · 12 months ago
I find you very good at telling people who that they don't understand, and really not good at explaining yourself.

You have twice now attacked the messenger and failed to support your argument.

Funny, I'm watching Pat Buchanan on Hardball right now and you argue just like he does.

You know, I don't blame you for coming to the conclusion. Every time I try and post a reply with links to supporting articles, it mysteriously doens't get approved. I find THAT funny.

I find you really good at telling people they are wrong, but very bad at supporting your argument.

Second time now in this thread that you've attacked the messenger but you're still not making your point effectively.

I'm watching Pat Buchanan on Hardball right now and you argue just like he does. Just like many Republicans do.
  • ivyfree · 12 months ago
Geeze. "Feistily"? That's a term that only gets used about women. If you were writing about men, you'd write "strongly" or "ably." Only women get called feisty.
  • dula · 12 months ago
I think there was sexism in regards to Palin. She was rightfully made a joke for daring to enter the big boys league without being intellectually prepared. Dan Quayle was given much more consideration as was Arnold Schwartzenegger(who had zero experience in politics when he ran for Governor). Men who are jokes get a much bigger pass for their idiocy than women who are jokes...and let's not even start with G.W.
  • BAC · 12 months ago
While I'm still not convinced that Hillary suffered any more sexism than Obama suffered racism...

My feminist friends weren't suggesting this, we were simply upset that at least the racism leveled against Obama was being seriously address -- while no one seemed willing to even acknowledge there was sexism being directed at Clinton.

From the "Iron My Shirt" sign to Keith Olbermann suggesting someone take her into a back room and only one come back out the sexism seemed to be everywhere.

If you hate her policies, say so ... just don't define her by her pantsuit. And even though she worked her ass off to get where she is (and to help Bill achieve what he achieved) Chris Matthews claimed she only became a senator because her husband fooled around. How sexist is that?

Obama gave an excellent speech on racism during the campaign, but we have yet to hear anyone address the sexism.

  • consult · 12 months ago
All these months later and you still refuse to understand. Its not that attacking Hillary was in itself sexism- all candidates go through that. And, we all expected a bunch of nasty anti Clinton stuff from the right. Its that when people (on this blog in particular) got disgusted with Clinton, they expressed that anger and disgust in very specific gendered terms and said things that would never be said about a male candidate, no matter how bad he was. (give me the male equivalent of the nutcracker please) I won't go on and on with the examples- they have been well documented. Its not that Hillary lost votes because of sexism- its that the venom leveled at her exposed a lot of attitudes towards women that many of us frankly thought had been overcome. And, this stuff was coming from men we usually think are on our side. That was the worst part- you expect it from the right, but not from your comrades. As for Palin- its not sexist to call her an idiot, say she is uniformed, call her dangerous, call her a right wing nut. None of that is sexism, but saying all that and then saying-"well I would still love to f*k her" is sexist. Talking only about her sex appeal, which we heard a lot of in the beginning and not her lack of qualifications is sexist. See- women can't win. If you are old you are a dried up old witch and if you are young and pretty you are only good for one thing. I know this may not make a lot of sense to gay men, but try for a moment to put herself in the experience of women growing up with this, or women who thought it had all changed only to find its still the same.

What do you guys think of the mass mailing that went out from the Gov of Alaska inviting us all to get a free Alaska vacation guide? Until she's out of there, I'll NEVER visit Alaska no matter how beautiful the state is. She sucks.
  • Jeremy Buff · 12 months ago
How eloquently stated. "She sucks", how can you even back that up?
  • smallhandff · 12 months ago
Yea, perhaps John will ask RSVP cruises, who feature an Alaska cruise as well as advertise on this site, to cancel their planned trip.
  • JES · 12 months ago
I don't think there was any sexism. But I also don't think there was any racism. Everything should be fair game in politics. That's how the toughest S.O.B. wins.
  • jerry · 11 months ago
Tina Fey is full of it. Her goal was to destroy Sarah Palin. politically. You cannot compare the skits that Will Ferrell did on Bush or Dan Ackroyd did on Nixon to what Tina Fey did to Palin. Palin was an UNKNOWN at the time that Fey did her skits and she was running for national office for the first time. In comparison, Bush and Nixon were both Presidents when Ferrell and Ackroyd started to impersonate them. They had well known public persona's but most importantly they were already in office. Fey wanted to destroy Sarah Palin's publcic image before anyone could really get to know Palin. Fey likes to represent herself as a feminist. If so her main legacy as a feminist is that she played a key role in helping to defeat the first woman Vice-President. Congratulations Tina on a smear job well done! Talk about a lack of balance! I would like to hear from Tina Fey as to how many skits she did on Palin from September 1 to Election Day versus how many SNL did on Obama. (Did they even do one Obama skit after September 1???) Tina Fey is right about one thing. Sarah Palin is a strong woman and she will be back on the national scene. Next time she will be ready for Tina Fey's smear jobs.
