As a person of color I had absolutely no problem with how people interpreted her statement, at the time. In many ways Bill was the first POTUS to ever pander to black folks in such a way that he didn't seem like he was uncomfortable doing it. Bill would show up at black churches and speak on the pulpit, he seemed very comfortable being around large numbers of black folks, and let's face it, not to get all stereotypical but for a middle age white dude from Arkansas he had a lot of soul. All in all, Bill in many ways was the first black POTUS simply because he actually seemed like he gave a darn about black folks and not in the "oh those poor people" kind of way. Also, it helped that unlike most other POTUS candidates and nominees, he didn't mind being in a room full of people and being one of the few white guys.
Now, with the passage of well over a decade, we are either seeing his true stripes, or money and a sense of achieving everything he wanted has left him with no major need to continue to be cordial. Whatever the reason, taking Morrisons comment in the context of this election is a bit difficult given all of the things that have happened that have utterly shattered many peoples view of the Clintons.
Toni Morrison may be getting some pressure to recant her previous statements, but I for one thought they were very appropriate, for 15 years ago.
