AMERICAblog: Tony Blair: world needs more religion

  • cosanostradamus · 9 months ago
    .
Chris, what makes you think Blair is intelligent? Cunning, maybe, like most politicians, though that can backfire, as it did on Tony. Or is it his middle-class English accent? The royals have even plummier accents, and they're fookin' eejits. This quote is just further evidence of Blair's vapidity.

"...faith should be restored "to its rightful place, as the guide to our world and its future." Yup. Cuz it's working so well for the Iranians, the Israelis, the Indians, the Tibetans. And the Nazi Pope. Let's not forget him. Oh, and I hear Putin is a believer now, too.

Oh, yeah, and all those cracker *ssh*les in the South & Midwest in this country. Remarkably moral & intelligent people, living admirable lives, all of them.

Is Tony running for Archbishop of Canterbury, now? Or is he soliciting contributions for his own crystal cathedral, someplace warm & dry? Hey, Tony, thanks for backing up Dubya on the phony casus belli! 100,000+ dead Iraqi's thank you, too! You'd better HOPE there's no God, Sonny Jim.

Religious faith has NO place in the government of a country comprised of many faiths, nor a country which, as one of its founding principles, is directed to respect each and every one of the unique religious choices of its citizens.

If I want religious instruction/information, I know just where to go. I don't need to hear it from my senator, governor, or President, kwim?
  • Older_Wiser · 9 months ago
And I'd say just the opposite. After all, "prayer" is nothing more than cheerleading for oneself, and religion an expression of a belief in mythology and supersitition. I will keep repeating: religion has no place in govt. OR politics, and that goes for all religions.

    For chrissakes. : (/
  • medium lebowski · 9 months ago
So, you totally buy that Bush is actually religious?

If I were you, I wouldn't run too far with this theory.
  • One Key Missing · 9 months ago
Yeah, that was a scam to attract the fundies.
  • SeekTheTruth · 9 months ago
The world DOES need more faith.

But it doesn't need government telling it that.

And as far as calling religion and faith in God mythology, that's absurd. There is no 'rational' way to explain our presence and the earth's creation and development. And the existence of a higher being does not rule out science; it makes science possible.

The true mythology is in trying to define infinite terms within finite boundaries.

Older_Wiser; try this. Tell me what formed man. Then tell me what formed the earth. Then tell me what formed the former's former. Our finite minds can't do it!

Saying gov't has no place in forcing religion is not the same as saying religion has no place.
And the existence of a higher being does not preclude natural selection and evolution.

Fear of our own mortality is no reason to deny God.
  • Rob · 9 months ago
"Tell me what formed man. Then tell me what formed the earth. Then tell me what formed the former's former." Oh, why dont you tell us, I am sure your way is much more 'magical' and "whimsical" and we all enjoy good fiction. But I am sure we have all heard that story before.

Religion, has no place and invisible friends are for kids.
  • Older_Wiser · 9 months ago
My own lack of fear of my mortality is the EXACT reason I have no belief in a god. You have to understand that belief in any type of "god" is simply a way that humanity over the ages has tried to explain natural forces in their own way, not having the means through science at that particular time in history to do so.

We are always in a process of discovery of nature's mutable workings.

(P.S. The earth is no longer flat...that was disproved hundreds of years ago, along with other myths science has debunked over the centuries, and women are responsible for the presence of other human beings, not the stork--or "god.". Women should always control their own bodies because of that reason, not because of what men may or may not like couched in religious terminology.)
  • wmforr · 9 months ago
Ooooh! Perhaps Americablog is not the place for a theological discussion, but I can't help throwing your argument back at you. There is no 'rational' way to explain God's presence. Where did he come from? Tell me what formed God. Religion can not explain it. The only possible conclusion is that God was created by a Higher Power.
  • RitornaVincitor · 9 months ago
    Brilliant!!
  • wmforr · 9 months ago
In any case, there is a huge leap from "there must be a higher power that created the earth and mankind" to "oh, and by the way, that Higher Power took out time in his busy schedule to tell me not to eat meat on Fridays, to do everything I can to make homosexuals' lives miserable, and to kill everyone who doesn't belong to my particular sect. Don't ask me for reasonable arguments. GOD said it!"
  • RitornaVincitor · 9 months ago
Fear of our own mortality is the reason we created God. Plus it provides easy answers to all those difficult questions you asked. We need myths. Too bad believers messed this one up so utterly.
  • Rob · 9 months ago
Absolutely not. The last thing the world needs is more delusional nonsense. if there ever was a need for something, it would be reason and education, not invisible friends and silly dogma.
  • mikeyDe · 9 months ago
Blair has no doubt heard that Catholic collection plates are not overflowing with cash "in these hard economic times." What better means to reverse that trend than stoke up a religious war or two, advance anti-semitic bishops.
  • wmforr · 9 months ago
You must remember that when people like Blair say "religion" they mean "MY religion". I'm sure the religiously inspired al Qaeda and the religious wars being fought around the world did not enter his head. "Religion" means CofE, some other Protestants, Catholicism because you don't want to cross the Pope, Judaism because you don't want to be called anti-Semitic.

The 9/11 terrorists were "people of faith" and isn't that comforting? Allah akbar!
  • Indigo · 9 months ago
More respect, yes. More religion, nonsense! Tony's conversion to Vaticanism is his little way of acting out as a new Thomas Moore. That's fine, I want the beheading televised!

    gratuitous, self-referential post

from two years ago in my tribute to sans culotte

    http://tofubo.blogspot.com/2007/07/sans-culotte...

...on the international front, blair went from co-initiating an illegal invasion and occupation of a sovereign middle-eastern nation to being the front man on middle-east peace talks (talk about boltonizing your chances at successfully implementing stability and good-will)...

anyone know how'd those talks go ??
  • sittenpretty · 9 months ago
whata sick fuck, how about a faith in simply not demolishing other people and their rights
  • caphillprof · 9 months ago
He had his chance, more than 15 minutes, now get off the stage and disappear.
  • jeffg166 · 9 months ago
The time of Bush, Blair and all the other holy rollers has past.
  • evan_la · 9 months ago
    What an ignorant twit.
  • protogenes · 9 months ago
This century has been pretty mean so far *under* the guardianship of faith in God.

I'll pass on these recommendations Tony. Of course, if religion is restored "to its rightful place", I may not have that right much longer...
  • Forty2 · 9 months ago
Why the fuck is there even a "prestigious US National Prayer Breakfast" in the first place?
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 9 months ago
i'd replace it with the "National Stoned out of your Mind Breakfast". there are too many Very Serious Persons in DC.
  • Roger Bixley · 9 months ago

Winston Churchill once described another politician as "a sheep in sheep's clothing."

That what I think of Tony the Poodle.
  • Mark217 · 9 months ago
David Miliband, UK foreign Sec'y, is an atheist (he is also really hot looking). He is also a contender for leadership of the Labour Party (and may challenge Gordon Brown for Labour Party leadership). The next UK prime minister may be a non-believer. In our own country we have five Roman Caholic males (out of nine justices) on our Supreme Court representing Pope Benedict in our government. This is a taliban-style court that is stacked against reproductive choice and gay civil liberties. I hope Obama picks someone like Angela Davis for the court. We need some serious counterweight to the christianists. Tony Blair and other architects of the Anglo-American war of aggression against Iraq should be on the same gallows with Saddam Hussein (after a fair trial by an international tribunal for war crimes and crimes against humanity). Blair has blood on his hands and his preaching makes me nauseous..
  • lilybart · 9 months ago
Whose version of God are we going to use? Blair is a Catholic. Could we NOT use that version of God, the one that protects child rapists and welcomes holocaust deniers?

    Humanism works for everyone.
  • beware of the leopard · 9 months ago
Both Tony Blair AND this God thing can go fuck themselves.
  • Jeff · 9 months ago
Tony Bliar [sic], you are absolutely, devoutly, piously BENEATH CONTEMPT! Save your truly pathetic magical thinking for the privacy of your own wretched brain. Religion of ANY kind belongs nowhere near government. (Oh, and President Obama, sir, neither do faith-based programs still hanging over us from the Bush daze! Kindly cancel them.)
  • Rafael Espericueta · 9 months ago
What a hypocrite! He who can’t follow even the simplest precepts of his own religion, not to kill, and to love his enemies. So much religion is the actual cause of killing and hatred. We need far less fundamentalism, in every religion…
  • falloch · 9 months ago
With how many more war criminals am I going to see President Obama shaking hands?
  • Jeff · 9 months ago
Obama is still pandering to those who want no clear separation of church and state: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/06/us/politics/0...
Little wonder that he & ol' Tony are so chummy.
  • cwazycajun · 9 months ago
Hey tony how long is it gonna be till we hear that you are screwin little boys or snortin meth of hookers ass all the while ragein aginst such things
  • AdmNaismith · 9 months ago
    No we do not.
The Nordic countries, the least religious in the world, are the most stable and prosperous. The rest of the world needs to follow their lead.
  • RitornaVincitor · 9 months ago
    And Denmark is the happiest.
  • Best Tool I Ever Had! · 9 months ago
Religion is the best tool i ever found for ripping off the weal and stupid. Thank you fake, invisible, made up being in the clouds for supplying me with so many earge morons who want to be burned, lied to, and taken advantage of. Doesn't matter how bad the economy gets either. There is always a victim living in a trailer park that still sports a bush/chaney bumper sticker on the car on blocks out front that's waiting to be taken for a ride with a smile on both our faces. Three cheers for victims who beg to be burned!!!

The exact reason why the founding fathers and mothers left England in the first place.
  • Mike_G · 9 months ago
He believed the 21st century would be "poorer in spirit" and "meaner in ambition" if it was not "under the guardianship of faith in God."

"Poor in spirit" and "mean in ambition" defines Bush and Blair perfectly, and they were/are both stuffed to the gills with arrogant, self-righteous religious delusions.

Bliar, take you child-raping organized crime syndicate headed by a former Hitler Youth 'religion' and cram it. I don't take morality lectures from war criminals.
  • Stargodzilla · 9 months ago
He is right. Islam is the religion. Others are simply nonsense. Christians and Jews must accept Islam for their salvation. Jesus is not G-d btw. He is a prophet just like others. You can still love him as Jesus, but he is not G-d. OK? In addition Christians must love Muhammad too. As for Jews, their situation is very complicated. They have to love both Jesus and Muhammad. Otherwise they will go to hell (hope they do..)
  • RitornaVincitor · 9 months ago
At least you don't pretend to be loving like Christians do.
  • paulbe · 9 months ago
From earliest times to today, the gods of man evolved from old fashioned primitive sun worship. We started adding made up shit when politics became involved. Islam, christianity, judaism, Hinduism, you name it. All made up shit combined with weak explanations.
  • RitornaVincitor · 9 months ago
Poor Tony. An intelligent man who was destroyed by becoming Bush's poodle. Now he's thrown himself into Catholicism with all the passion of a convert whose life went down the tubes. And he still wants to be the favorite of the US President. It's sad, really.
  • HarpoSnarx · 9 months ago
You know Father Ross said the same thing to me in an isolated part of the retreat house just as I inexplicably left my own body. Go figure.

As for Blair, I'd LOVE to see him deliver that homily to a Baghdad audience.

To paraphrase Henry II, "Will no one rid us of this turbulent priest!”

The only difference is Tone has to bone Cherie (shiver) . . . no wonder he's turned to Gawd.

Alas, I think our guy laps this shit up even though its all part of the same old rightist culture war master baiting.
  • DougStamate · 9 months ago
One Key missing posted: "...Churchill once described another politician as a 'sheep in sheep's clothing'...". He was referring to Clement Atlee, Labor PM 1945-1951.
As for Mr. Blair, I am presuming that since he has found religion he will now give away all but the most meagre portion of his wealth (see NT, something about being rich and getting into Heaven)?
I wasn't going to hold my breath...
  • TomJoad · 9 months ago
Blair is a total ass. I thought he sounded at least intelligent, but that doesn't mean much if he has other traits that make him less...

    And he does.

I totally lost respect for him after hearing that open-mic (accidental) where he begged Bush to let him go to (syria?) a mideast country to be an advance man, and Bush dismissed him (of course, arrogant as hell) like the lapdog he was and is.

He's also responsibly for the Iraq war, to hell with him.
