The implosion of the GOP has been a beautiful thing to watch.

    This is disturbing.
I also recognize that Obama has to appeal to fundie America and this particular ad stresses putting Christian beliefs into daily life practice and not necessarily into gov't.
I hate this tactic as much as I hate the necessity for it, but he can't bring us change unless he can get elected.

    mirth,

Obama wants to unite us, so he must reach out to everybody. He also must deflect the Muslim smears. So when the smearing vampires attack, he whips out a cross for protection! :-)

Your words always comfort me, Nigel.

Displaying a Christian cross is hardly uniting all the various religion flavahs in America; however, I realize this ad is aimed at a predominately evangelical protestant state.

I wish Obama could come out swinging at these funky fundies, that during this campaign he would declare an absolute barrier between religion and gov't.

But this is America, and I grant that the ad is a smart move.

    Gulp.

The Repubs ran against Jimmy Carter for at least 10 years.

We can easily do the same with Bush if we keep pushing the message of the failure that was the "Bush Years."

And let's not write W. Virginia off in the fall either.

Sure it's a primary and not a general election, but in a year where the Republican brand has a lower approval rating than herpes it's something to consider:

Barack Obama with just 26 percent of the Democratic votes 91,663.
John McCain with just 76 percent of all Republican votes 89,654.

They deserve this. Who's more at fault the person who is stupid but doesn't know it or the person who know's better but follows the stupid person anyway.

I hope they never have a majority on even a goddam school board ever again. I do not always love Democrats when they spend to a fare thee well or increase taxes on us poor slobs but I would take the worst tax and spend anyday over these assholes...especially the bible thumpers who've been telling me whom I can love since Reagan. I hope the GOP burns in hell.

What I appreciate the most is the constant talk of restoring the Republican "brand."

See it's not what they're selling - their agenda, their contempt for the Constitution, their love of the war. It's the way they package what they're selling. They're used to selling s**t shaped like candy and now they assume it's time to redesign the wrapper, but it's NOT the time to stop selling s**t.

I explained to my in-laws (both die-hard Repuiblicans, both aghast at what the GOP has become) that most of the big-tent Republican bullet points, in and of themselves, seem ok, but then you gotta ask the follow up:

Strong military? Good! But how do we use that military?

Lower taxes? Great! But what do we sacrifice?

Family values? Awesome! Whose family? And what if your values aren't the same as that family?

Tough on crime? Suh-WEET! What happens when that toughness isn't
consistent, and some criminals are treated better than others?

Integirty in politics! I'm on board! Are you willing to renounce and reject the politicians on YOUR side of the fence when they're caught being up to no good?

Civility in discourse? I'm all for it! Why are you wathcing Bill "Just shut up" O'Reilly?

They, like most of us, are taught to embrace the inherent rightness of our side and ignore/forgive lapses in ethics. But the GOP of the past 7 years has a complete180 going on in what they say versus what they do. They're not fiscally responsible, they don't respect the troops, and they hurt the public time and time again to coddle business. Their agenda is effed up. And people now know this. It's not just about rephrasing their old talking points. It's about figuring out what being a conservative is, what they cost us and how (if at all) they benefit us.

Once they figure that out, they'll be juuuuuust fine.
