My dad was old school GOP. "Keep the fucking government out of my checkbook and out of my bedroom." He was very politically active most of his life and was a big wig in the Massachusetts GOP in the fifties and into the sixties. He did vote for JFK because they'd known each other as kids and he truly despised Nixon. He said that Nixon was crooked and tricky...and we know how that turned out. Anyway in the 1968 debacle with George Wallace's independent run on racism, Dad said something that has turned out to be very profound. He saw already how Nixon was using his "Southern Strategy" to pick up the white trash voter in the South. He said that this pact with the devil would lead to a facist/theocrat led party which would eventually destroy itself. There were many of his fellow old school Republicans back then who saw this coming and left the party and became Independents. So the leadership changed and shifted to this ugly group of neocons we have now. He did not live to see the Bushes come into power. But his uncanny predictions over forty years ago have played out.

Old school Republicans used to have self respect, nothing like this crowd of authoritarian, goose-stepping criminals in DC these days who would sell their own mother as a sex slave if it would bring them more power and money. See below.

Yeah, this was when those white trash voters switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party because they were against Civil Rights. Why oh why didn't we let the South cecede from this Nation when they wanted to?

I totally agree. Being a Bostonian living in Dallas, I get into some really nasty fights here with the natives. I often say bitchy things like..."Well if y'all had only added a few cannon factories, instead of lazily sippin' y'all's mint julips on the porch watchin' the field hands pickin' cotton, y'all mighta won." That goes over real big. And of course they call me a carpetbagger, too. Of course I get asked all the time, if I hate it here so much, why don't I go back to Yankeeland. And it's a reasonable question. My usual retort is "Well someone has to move down here to civilize y'all."

I grew up with a bunch of Texas relatives. From the time I was four, they were telling me "you know, when you think about it, Texas really is the best state". And you know I hadn't thought about it, because I was born in Chicago and had just moved to St. Louis, so I saw myself as someone from two northern states (st. louis is yankee, but much of Missouri is not). My sister then married a guy from Rural Missouri and moved down there. He, and she, were happier than pigs in slop. When I would go down there you'd here stuff like "you know Texas is the only state that came in as an Independent nation. We came in under treaty and we can leave any time we want to."
If only. I would say things, like, well If Puerto Rico opts for independence, we should make them take Texas with them. Imagine that. Texas a colony of Puerto Rico. If only...

Bubbles...Dallas is actually a great town. I came down here for new career ten years ago and I have enjoyed this place about 95% of the time. My Boston Brahmin mother still says to me..."Oh god you're not living in that town that took Jack." A bit unfair, so many years after the JFK story. Most of my friends here are all Yankee transplants. But one does encounter the true Texan who thinks Dubbya is a demi god and Tom DeLay just didn't get to finish a job well done. Yes...we can secede by the stroke of a pen. If ONLY!

I don't care about some effete, British rich snob. But I do care about this:
GOP Whistleblower Names KKKarl Rove in Ohio Vote Scandal:
With investigations and lawsuits against him, you'd think at least one would stick. My fondest dream is to see this bastard perp-walked.

I agree Older...I want Rove in orange jump suit and leg cuffs perp walking. I love how we ignore voter fraud issues until 11:59.

Rove is an evil fat bag of pus. That's what he looks like to me. In all of American history, nobody comes close to the damage to this country that he's done.
i am old enough to remember that it was nelson, himself, who necessitated the need for "values issues" to enter the conversation and provided moralizing, hypocritical goldwater supporters to use the divorce and "happy's bastard children" to ruin his presidential chances.
i remember my parents (liberal new yorkers who, if they voted for rockefeller, would have done so out only of admiration for his art collection, but who did support ken keating with enthusiasm) watching that convention and, realizing what was about to happen to politics, explaining to me that there were a lot of people who wanted so much for segregation to thrive that they would use any means available to achieve that goal.
my education into the demise of rockefeller republicans was actually watching the public humiliation of nelson rockefeller.

GENEVA - Some pre-negotiation jabbing turned into a potentially damaging diplomatic incident Saturday when Brazil's foreign minister said rich countries' deception in trade talks reminded him of tactics used by Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels.
