Is this the October surprise? Palin backs out and Romney - Mr. Economy - is in?

Mitt Romney is out speaking to business groups today.
But McCain replacing Palin with Romney would really just be seen as desperate not to mention erratic. What are the Republican Party rules with regard to that?

The Republican National Committee would meet and have to vote on McCain's choice for replacement (as they would if McCain needed to withdraw; Palin wouldn't automatically become the Presidential candidate).

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. As you can see, conservatives are in denial, not about Palin, but about what it all implies about McCain's judgment. They are afraid to connect the dots. But don't worry -- voters will do it for them. This is about McCain, not Palin.

McCain will never pick Romney. He's way too tall.

The base loves Palin because she's anti-abortion, and the base excuses her woeful ignorance by insisting that she'll grow into the job. The base also hates Romney because he's a Mormon. With Romney replacing Palin, the base would do what it was predicted to do before McSame chose Palin: stay home and not vote at all.

FWIW, Rudy and Judith Giuliani flew down with the McCains to Memphis.
The idea that having Palin replaced though would save McCain is extremely optimistic - it is too late to claim "family issues." It would make McCain's judgment (reinforced by all of his other errors) the key issue of the race. Obama would have a field day.
And then there is the base - talk about turnout depression and disappearance of the foot soldiers overnight.
And then there is the replacement - any choice raises problems, including Romney (who at least would get RNC approval easily, unlike necessarily Lieberman, Giuliani or even Ridge.
And then there are all the ballots that would not be changed, leaving her effectively in the race and causing much confusion.
If it is to be done, it likely is in the next few days.
BTW - there are reports that the rest of the interview is worse - for example, she is asked to cite the worst thing Cheney has done as VP, and she answers with "shoot the other hunter."

When even the mother of all kool-aid drinkers can't watch another Palin interview, you know it's bad:
I’m not where my friend Kathleen Parker is — wanting her to step aside to spend more time with her family and Alaska — but that’s not a crazy suggestion.
The last straw must have been the Pastor and the Witch show. But's that's just a guess.

Just let the Republicans rip her to shreds.

Really, just out of nowhere today, I was sure Palin was going to drop out. I don't think it will be for a few days. And I think Romney would be the only choice that was somewhat rational. However, Romney may want nothing to do with this insane McCain campaign at this point.
All of the comments about how hideous McCain looks and about how his confusion and pallor could be dire indicators are also making me think that maybe he will be gone very soon as well...

Ok Joe Biden may occassionally insert his foot in his own mouth..but the Man is SMART,EXPERIENCED on Foreign Policy....there is NO comparison to him and Palin..ZERO! Palin is painful to watch, and listen too...I am all for OBAMA..but I gotta say - she makes me feel sorry for her...NOT that I'd ever vote for her..YIKES! SHE IS COMPLETELY OUT OF HER LEAGUE!

When everybody else was denouncing Strom Thurmond after his black daughter came forward, Kathleen Parker, who is from South Carolina, wrote a column defending ol' Strom. That's how conservative she is. Of course, that same column proved beyond all doubt that she's also dumb as a box of rocks.
This is the first thing I can remember that she's ever been right about. Not that I hope Palin or McCain will take Parker's advice: I want them to be locked together like Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier in "The Defiant Ones."

Well, my bet that Palin wouldn't last until Nov 4 is looking better now. Obviously, it would be crazy for McCain to replace the VP candidate so late in the election. But the McCain campaign is obviously crazy. I can still win this bet. I'm helped by the fact the McCain campaign is hell-bent on continually doing something even crazier than the craziest thing they did last week. They have completely severed their tether to reality and are on the other side of the moon now. We're in that that moment of communication silence when we have no idea what's going to happen when communications come back on line. It's really freaky. I was too young to really experience the Apollo 13 mission, but now I'm getting an idea of what it must have been like with the McCain campaign. Hopefully, we can bring John back to earth safely.

With the mess McCain has made of his campaign who knows what he might do next BUT I sincerely doubt he would get rid of Palin. It would be the final nail in his coffin about erratic behavior. Sure she could exit on her own but she isn't the type to exit. Nope, McCain made this mess and he is just going to live with.
As he once said he makes snap decisions and lives with the consequences.

Here's how it works, folks: (1) any man who opposes Sarah Palin = hates women, and (2) any woman who opposes Sarah Palin = is a victim of self-loathing. . . . And any man who denies (1) is so blinded by his hatred for women that he can't see how much he hates women; AND any woman who denies (2) is so blinded by her own self-loathing that she can't see how much she loathes herself. Gee . . . sound familiar ?

I don't blink, Charlie, even for my country. I have the readiness to step into the presidency, Charlie. That is what is important. You don't need an "understanding" of the issues, just "readiness." I learn this when I was just a kid. Ready. Aim. Fire. Don't blink!
I've got it all down to those five words. That is all a potential president needs: Ready. Aim. Fire. Don't blink.
America NEEDS me Charlie! I AM doing this for my country! I am READY. I AIM to FIRE the entire US government, and I won't blink--not once!.

During Sarah's convention speech, I was surprised when the camera, panning the crowd, picked out Newt Gingrich, unsmiling, looking down at his hands in his lap, instead of at Sarah.
At first I assumed that he was being careful not to provoke the wrath of the third Mrs. Gingrich, who might be afraid of his roving eye. Now I wonder if he was thinking "John's gonna be SO sorry he picked her."

Here's how it will probably go down: If Palin herself bows out (family issues, downs syndrome child), the Republicans keep their support from the soccer moms for nominating a woman in the first place (same thing with the evangelicals), and then pick up votes from the original Romney supporters. The stuff that would have derailed Romney in the beginning (Mormonism, he's "too liberal" etc) will be pushed to the side in the interests of party unity, and they win the election. Brilliant, really.
Fireblazes(CheetohsandCatfood)

No, I do not think they will give Romney a free pass. Evangelicals do not consider Mormons to be Christians.

Agreed, except that many evangelicals may not feel the same anti-Romney fervor that they did in the primaries. Many will, but I think people are tiring out, and just want to vote and get it over with.

>>>McCain can’t repudiate his choice for running mate. He not only risks the wrath of the GOP’s unforgiving base, but he invites others to second-guess his executive decision-making ability. Barack Obama faces the same problem with Biden.<<<
I disagree, I believe that most dems are confident with Biden. The author seems to be justifying her position of weakness by accusing Biden of being as weak as Palin. Biden may put his foot in his mouth on occasion. Mainly because he has strong beliefs and says what he thinks is right. But at least he is intelligent and has the ability to think an independant complex thought.

I sincerely hope that other females read and understand what the "Palin phenomenon" actually represents. McCain chose a female thinking that all females are interchangeable - not suprising coming from him. I remain shocked that more women (and men) aren't outraged by this attitude.
This is probably the only time I'll even partially agree with Parker - but she is right on about Palin. This pick by the Repubs was nothing but an insult to people who actually accomplish things through their own merit.
Put the armed wolves in the helicoptors and let them have a go at her.

If there was zero chance of McCain being elected, I would hope Palin remains on the ticket and help sink it.
But Palin is so scary, I'd rather her resign and risk a McCain/Romney ticket being elected (Or McCain/Lieberman, or McCain/Ridge or McCain/Palenty or whatever)
lovepeaceandallthat

I think McCain is about to croak. Literally. I really think he is not going to live another year.
If this is indeed his prognosis, the republican leadership really, really doesn't want Palin a heartbeat away. For endless reasons.
So in a way, the republicans have a great opportunity: get rid of Palin and replace her with someone they REALLY want as PRESIDENT. Of course, they would need politically manuver around replacing the VP... McCain would have to die within a reasonable amount of time... they would have to on a new VP. .... and they would have to win the election,
Just my rambling thoughts...probably way off base. However, I really do think McCain is going to pass away soon. He just looks that way to me.

You know, the Roves of the GOP probably know McCain will kick the bucket and want her to be president. Just look at Monkeyboy--another stupid Governor who was a fallguy for Cheney. They probably think they can control Miz Sarah, too. Remember how Monkeyboy was always chaffing and trying to prove he was in charge?

I would be very surprised if McCain booted Palin. She's one of the bookends to his self-aggrandizing mythology. We have the renegade-navy-cadet-cum-heroic-POW on one end and the savior-of-woman-as-presidential-material on the other end, with smatterings of "maverick" and "reformer" and "one of the guys" and "prince of the press gaggle" in between. Over the past several months, both the press and the people are starting to pay more attention to the cracks in the veneer, to those little memes that are glossed over in the hero/maverick/reformer mythology - the Keating 5 debacle, his treatment of his first wife, his temper, his erratic reasoning process, his health issues, his poor education, his warmongering, his philosophical and legislative alliance with the Bush administration and the neo-cons, his incoherence, his ties to lobbyists, his lack of vision, etc., etc., etc. His ambition, as he himself has stated, is to be President. I sincerely doubt that the "country first" slogan is anything more than that for McCain. The same recklessness that caused him to graduate near the very bottom of his Naval Academy class, crash planes, cheat on his first wife, and engage in unethical behavior vis-a-vis Charles Keating, has guided his campaign strategy. He seems to have no regard for how his age or his health would affect his ability to lead the country. What makes us think that he really cares about Palin's complete and total lack of qualification to serve? My guess is that the only thing he cares about is that her inadequacy has become obvious to everyone before November 4. As for Palin, she is so totally wrapped up in her own little presidential pageant that I doubt she would make the decision on her own. Remember, she doesn't "blink." And, it is obvious that she also doesn't think.

Why on earth would we want Sarah to leave the race, except to lighten Tina Fey's workload? She is, frankly, one more reason for people to vote Democrat. I say keep her. She's an asset.

Doesn't it suck, Ms. Parker, that the first woman your party nom-ed for major office turned out to be not a garden variety female woman-hater like yourself, but an exceptionally stupid female woman-hater? I bet all of you uterus-sporting misogynists ARE collectively cringing; why, it just might make people think there is something suspect about hating your own gender or something.

I just re-read the article and I had another thought, I've read Parker's columns over the years and while she pisses me off I would never call her an Ann Coulter wanna-be. She's male-identified like many conservative women (mother died when she was young, raised by her father, typical) but she is to Ann Coulter what George Will is to Rush Limbaugh. I don't really think they are in the same league (plus I think Will and Parker are two authentic conservatives while Limbaugh and Coulter are grifters whose only ideology is greed and they know where the money to be made flows from, the right).

Interesting that she should say that, since the feminists have been right all along and this woman is just now getting it. Can republicans be that slow-witted? Oh, right....duh.
