AMERICAblog: Tuesday Morning Open Thread

    Good morning.

As an aside, allow me to say that although culturally interesting, BBC commentators are difficult to understand because they talk funny.
  • Asterix · 1 year ago
As one who has listened to the BBC World Service for several decades (shortwave then and internet now) for my primary news source, I have to say that you're spot on.

It used to be that all the BBC announcers spoke in a well-groomed "received standard" dialect. While it was artificial, it did convey a sense of reason and calmness. Nowadays, it's getting harder to navigate through the maze of UK dialects one encounters on the Beeb. I suppose that tomorrow, I'll hear the news read in Gerodie

Most disappointng however, is the strident tone of some of the "personalities"--Lyse Doucet in particular seems so very un-Beeb like.. On the other hand, we still have the old-timers like Peter Day to remind us of how the Beeb used to sound.

    good morning.

i watched yesterdays events on cspan. the few times i switched over to msnbc keith, rachel and tweety were okay - but the rest of those gop talking point spreaders were intolerable. whoever came up with the idea of counter spin during your opponents convention should be punished. it does nothing but drive the wedges deeper. if their point was to make the other half of us hate them, i think they're succeeding.

This is truly priceless..( video) This is exactly what needs to happen with all these disgusting shill mouth pieces. I am not an AJ fan. However, it is nice to see a conservative fringe group diss this Beeeitch!

    love it!

    good morning.
i caught just the beginning of the convention on NPR. the commentators are much more tolerable and it didn't seem to be all about the PUMA thing, but I have to say...Nancy P's speech was bor-ing. too bad they don't just broadcast what's going on in the Big Tent.

i vote for doing away with conventions. they seem past their usefulness and just a colossal waste of $.

ps. now watching Michelle on youtube. just wow.
she knows how to connect. i love it when people just speak in front of a mic, as they speak without getting that yelling, sing songy thing going
  • meemers · 1 year ago
Yeah...the youtube is a better version. . I agree with the convention. The media (mostly)allows only Conservative pundits on all of the major news networks spin and spew negative bullshit.

BBC gives good coverage, but I was in London this past week, and was not happy to see the coverage about Biden. They got some arrogant looking conservative, wearing the usual US flag on his lapel, and he was so negative about this VP pick, it made me mad. Unfortunately BBC did not have someone from the other side to dispute the verbal garbage. The republican pundits have nothing substantial to talk about, so they constantly gripe about everything.

    Hey Joe:

Have you guys in the bubble heard about the assassination plot?

I assume it was a bunch of Fox News thugs, like the guy who shot up that church, but they don't have much beyond their names and a confession at this point.
  • meemers · 1 year ago
Obama plot wasn't credible threat, police say
    http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Obama_plot_wasnt_...

They would only consider it credible if they were plotting to kill the white candidate!
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Or if they were a few Jamaicans who were talked into trying to take down the Sears Tower with walkie talkies and steel-toed shoes.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
BTW: Look for the Sean Hannity books...then we'll know if they're killers or not.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Gawd.

They sure look like Fox News morons:

Ah, once again the liberals are lulled into submission and idol worship. I nearly gagged over the shots of women crying in the audience as she spoke. Don't you know how scripted this was to do damage control on her? Believe me, I will cry if they get into office! WAKE UP people, your Democratic congress has NOT done what they said they would do when they came into power, and now you believe your savior is BO?

Who remembers when Kerry ran for Pres. and had several mansions and a multi millionaire wife, heir to the Heinz foods fortune.
But that was OK and his supporters ignored that.
Now the Dems criticize McCain and his rich wife for the same thing.
I am sick of Dems redistributing our wealth in the U.S. to numerous people that refuse to work and get ahead. They want their votes so they pander to them.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Kerry's wife didn't buy her husband's way into Congress.

    McCain's wife did.

Besides, it's not that they're both rich, it's that one was rich and actually working to raise his own taxes to make the country more equitable, while another is rich and running just to keep as much of his tax breaks as he can.
  • dad · 1 year ago
no, you'd rather redistribute public dollars (tax dollars of hard-working Americans) to private profit.
    (dare me to give examples)

or at least you do by supporting bush/mccain

though agree there is little difference between kerry's and mccain's get rich quick marriages.
i think you should continue to compare the two. works for me.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Well said, Dad. Kerry might have been this wealthy millionaire, but he supported the policies that benefitted the poor and middle class, and not the ones that McCain, Bush and Cheney supports.
At the end of Bush and Cheney's second term, there is ample proof that shows that the wealthy just got wealthier under these two war profiteers, and that the poor and middle class are the Americans who are now suffering. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to find that out. We do not need another President that will continue the suffering, and who will make sure the wealthy continue to bleed this country dry.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
uh. the dems in congress haven't got enough votes quite yet. don't give up now man.
  • econprofes · 1 year ago
The difference is Kerry never accused Bush of being an elitist. McCain is the elitist and like Bush was a moron who got where he is today on his father's coat tail but for McCain to have the audacity to accuse Obama of being what he is shows McCain has no shame or honor. If you want to support another “intellectually challenged President” then that shows that like McCain you are also intellectually challenged. Those of us who can think and don’t procreate with our sisters or brothers want a new course for this country.

Fox makes stunning attack on Jon Stewart, citing Oscars' ratings after he criticizes political coverage.

    Unbelievable. They're attacking comedians now.

(Have they figured out yet that Colbert is really mocking them?)

I suspect that there are few REAL people involved in the so-called "PUMA" group. Rather, the traditional media has been punk'd into following this fake storyline. Why? Because it so oh-so-satisfyingly fed into the traditional media's biases: "The Dems are divided!" "Oh no, _______ (fill in the blank) happened - this is bad news for the Dem!!" "What a great horse race - tune in to watch our expert 'anaysts' explain it to you!!!"

It's all horseshit. The traditional media, controlled by the compliant corporatists, have decided that their job is to treat us like mushrooms: feed us bullshit and keep us in the dark. When someone is so inclined to believe the gospel of "Dems divided," then the traditional media will bite whenever they sniff one or two confused and misinformed sheep-Dems bleating "Hell no, I won't vote for Obama."

How ironic. The traditional media get punk'd by a fake Obama-ain't-no-Hillary meme, and that turns out to in-fact be bad for the Dems... and America. How sad.
  • Asterix · 1 year ago
I see that the Democratic leadership has a problem here that stems from the very bitter primary campaign rhetoric. How is Hillary now supposed to convince her supporters that everything trotted out about Obama's inexperience (that 3 AM phone call thing in particular) was a fat lie?

This is one area where I think the GOP had it right. Inflammatory charges by someone from the same party tend to carry more credibility (and therefore are harder to dispel) than the same utterances by someone from the opposition.
  • canuck55 · 1 year ago
It is quite revealing to watch the differing coverage of BBC world, CBC Newsworld and the American networks. Such a difference in not only style, but in editorial choices. The Americn networks tend to focus on "fake news" - day 321 of the kidnap of an Anerican student abroad or talking heads filling time about rumours of Barak being a secret Muslim, whilst the other networks are concerned with international stories such as Georgis and the geopolitical reasons for the situations arising. I hate to say it, but substance does appear to trump style. And as an aside, if one takes the BBC tour in London, they are proud to confirm that they, not CNN are the largest news organization in the world (and you might run into Jennifer Saunders in the hallway!).
