Beautiful photo. Especially your text - ..."photos that show things that you might not notice, but are actually there if you open your mind, and your eye, to what's around you.".

As the boat limps toward Lebanon, passengers have been in contact with the Lebanese government who have said the captain has permission to dock and are willing lend assistance if needed. Cyprus sea rescue has also been in touch, and has offered assistance as well. The Dignity clearly flies the flag of Gibraltar, is piloted by an English captain and has a passenger manifest that includes Representative Cynthia McKinney from the U.S. The attack was filmed by the journalists, and the crew and passengers will report on Israel's crime at sea once they arrive in

You think they will show that film here, NO I sincerely doubt it, What Israel is doing is worse than wrong. I say kick Israelis back to their original holdings in the area and MAKE them get along with their neighbors. We have been fed a steady diet of "poor Israel" well to hell with that. They have been nothing but land grabbing aggressors since their inception,. With each military excursion into Arab/Palestinian lands they have justified it with some ridiculous excuse and the USA has backed them.

I hope McKinney and the press shows the world just how brutal and inhumane the Israelis really are.

Very nice photo. Speaking of which, why are the major newspapers not carrying more photos of the destruction in Gaza? Here in Dallas our local paper (usually only good for wrapping garbage) is not giving it much space. The story was relegated to an inside page while the cover was graced with a picture of the Cotton Bowl.

If the press put a face on the carnage in Gaza, the country might take more interest in seeing it stopped. Just my 2 cents.

(Be sure to read the opinion piece about a "one state solution." Hmm.)

Beautiful photo, John. Reminds me of a light fog here in San Francisco. ;0) Also reminds me of my vision before I got the Lasik. As a kid I loved to take my glasses off at Christmas time and see the whole world that way.

This is absolutely despicable, the Israelis rammed a ship carrying medical supplies, doctors and nurses. NO one should excuse or forgive this inhumanity. Israel has blocked all access to Gaza for 18 months and now that they are bombing Gaza back to the stone age they are REFUSING to allow humanitarian relief.

I have never been a fan of Israel, their aggressiveness has always been excused by this country. They have gone to far, I mean really too far by denying humanitarian efforts to help the people of Gaza.

After lurking for a while now, your beautiful christmas picture has moved me to comment. I agree that shots like that with elements that you may have missed in life are wonderful. There's something about looking through a lens that brings small details to attention. I just love the depth of field you achieved with the distant trees and lights. Great shot.

"but are actually there if you open your mind, and your eye, to what's around you": That's a statement that kind of describes the GOP and the 23%ers big time. Some aides talk to Vanity Fair about a lot of issues, including The Little Shrub. Lawrence Wilkerson, Chief of Staff to Sec'y of State Powell calls Bush a Sarah Palin-like president and Cheney was manipulative. Oh, really? Who would've guessed? I suppose you would have to open your minds and eyes: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20081230/D95D0...

I have a friend who is a professional photographer. We can't go anywhere without him pointing out some tableau of people standing/bending/hanging out, dogs doing something weird, snails about to be stepped on, or tree branches framing something or other. It's a gifted eye that sees the small and interesting. Big pictures aren't all that're important. Sometimes we have to get little.

(12-30) 08:22 PST ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) --

Democratic candidate Al Franken now holds a 50 vote lead over Republican Sen. Norm Coleman with almost all of the counting in Minnesota's Senate race done.

Franken's lead grew by a few votes on Tuesday when the state Canvassing Board finished allocating thousands of ballots that had been held up due to candidate challenges.

Coleman's hopes now ride on a pool of uncounted absentee ballots that will be opened before next week. The size of that pile is in dispute but it is thought to be around 1,350. Coleman's campaign wants to add 650 more to the stack.

Even if the board declares a winner next week, the race won't be over. The losing party is expected to challenge the outcome in court.

the Israeli government reacted by punishing the entire civilian population. It announced that it was blockading the Gaza Strip in order to "pressure" its people to reverse the democratic process. The Israelis surrounded the Strip and refused to let anyone or anything out. They let in a small trickle of food, fuel and medicine – but not enough for survival. Weisglass quipped that the Gazans were being "put on a diet". According to Oxfam, only 137 trucks of food were allowed into Gaza last month to feed 1.5 million people. The United Nations says poverty has reached an "unprecedented level." When I was last in besieged Gaza, I saw hospitals turning away the sick because their machinery and medicine was running out. I met hungry children stumbling around the streets, scavenging for food.
