As a Southerner, the attacks on Obama being elitist by the elites of this country, it made me uncomfortable. Not just because the attacks are generally unfair and a distortion of what he actually said, but because it smacks of the sort of dirty, snide, racial attacks of the old South - the "uppity" black man attack. That somehow he just doesn't seem to "know his place", that his "reach has exceeded his grasp". Sort of like the attacks that he wasn't "black" enough. Being made by white people. ("high yellow", anyone?) I could continue with the sort of vile, negative, stereotypical attacks that have been made by rich, white Southerners against black men that they view as a threat, but I wouldn't want to give Hillary any ideas. This is a disgusting, racial attack against Obama being portrayed as an attack on Pennsylvania voters, and I will have none of it.

As was said by the op ed in the NY Times today:
This toxic issue[race] is at the core of the Clinton camp’s relentless effort to persuade superdelegates that Senator Obama “can’t win” the White House. It’s the only weapon left in the Clintons’ depleted armory.
Except for people who have been hiding in caves or living in denial, it’s pretty widely understood that a substantial number of those voters — in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and elsewhere — will not vote for a black candidate for president.

Sir Elton John’s recent performance at a fund-raising event for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has drawn a formal complaint from Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group.
Mr. John, a foreign national, cannot under federal law make any contribution to a federal, state or local election campaign. The group, in a letter from its president, Tom Fitton, described Mr. John’s appearance at the fund-raiser as an “in-kind contribution from a foreign national.”
The Clinton campaign could not be reached for comment. More than 5,000 tickets were sold to the event at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan.

Last Friday Bush admitted he was aware of the meetings on the application of torture and he approved. As was reported in The Washington Post yesterday: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/bl...
And the media spent the entire week-end and, still is, focused on Obama's 'bitter' remarks....

I hope someone in the Obama camp quotes this in the media.
"If [Republicans] could cut funding for Medicare, Medicaid, education, and the environment, middle-class Americans would see fewer benefits from their tax dollars, feel more resentful paying taxes, and become even more receptive to their appeals for tax cuts and their strategy of waging campaigns on divisive social and cultural issues like abortion, gay rights, and guns."
-- Bill Clinton, in his 2004 memoirs, My Life, making the same argument as Sen. Barack Obama.

I was watching FX News with my morning coffee (what can I say? I'm a masochist.) and all these rich, white pundits were talking about how Obama's "blunder" had maybe cost him the nomination. (They REALLY want Hillary up against their McCandidate!)
Unbelievable! His "contempt for working people", "thinks they're a bunch of dumb rubes", their economic self interest is "Marxist philosophy". And worst of all "thinks big corporations are their enemy."
Imagine. He's just lost the vote of every poor Pennsylvanian who knows that big corporations are their friend, especially the corporation that just laid them off.
BY DAVE BARRY ....time to file your federal tax return. Yes, this is a pesky chore, but remember that paying taxes is not a ''one-way street.'' When you send your money to the government, the government, in return, provides you with vital services, such as not putting you in prison. The government also uses your money to pay for programs that benefit all Americans, such as the Catfish Genome Project.
And along with my Fakes News breakfast, I learned that Obama wants to spend lots and lots of money making the government DO things, but that the government always screws up doing things, and as proof, they offered all the Federal agencies that have become screw-ups under Bush's watch.
No sense of irony. These greedy asshills have no sense of irony.

Of course they are. Obama is the so called fly in the ointment of the Washington establishment. Obama ends the gravy train they all depend on. For them, this is about survival and Obama must be destroyed. All the more reason to vote for Barack, if nothing else to pry their cold dead hands off our tax dollars.

From Nat'l Review Online on Arianna Huffington: (Jim Geraghty)
How, exactly, can Arianna Huffington brag that Obama's description of what ails "bitter" small town Pennsylvanians were "broken here on HuffPost's OffTheBus" and then moments later attack Hillary for "relentlessly using these comments for political gain"?
Isn't she basically arguing, "Obama's comments are really big news... that are completely inappropriate for her to comment on!"
But by showcasing a comment that reinforces all kinds of negative memes about Obama, that batters him in small-town Pennsylvania, and that will make valuable fodder for McCain in the general election, I have to admit... nice job, Arianna.
McCain, Rove and Clinton seem to be working together to take Obama down.

From Minnesota Monitor: New ads target Pawlenty on medical marijuana Mon Apr 14, 2008 at 12:53:48 PM Andy Birkey A bill to allow patients with debilitating, intractable pain to legally possess marijuana, having already passed the Minnesota Senate, is set for a vote in the House. Gov. Tim Pawlenty is threatening a veto of the bill, and advocates of medical marijuana targeted Pawlenty in a series of ads featuring patients who have found relief from their conditions only through marijuana.

It's reasonably clear to most observers and at-home commentators that nominating Hillary would be the DNC's donation to the McCain presidency. I'd like to know more about how the DNC and its enablers profit from throwing away the presidency. Tax cuts for the wealthy certainly help all wealthy including Billary and Daughter, so there's that. Senator Kerry and his lovely wife have no doubt invested wisely overseas. Senator Gore is now draped in a Nobel toga but I don't think the Republican administration supported that, not even secretly. He's a good thorn in their sides and it probably amuses the Scandanavians no end to see him doing so well in the face of repeated fascist attacks. But then there's the so-called "little people." My neighbors and their new driveway, the repeated anti-gay heckling that is Floribama's panhandle wisdom, the unfinished highway repairs, the schools closed to punish the public for voting the "wrong" way, the speeding tickets for going 40 mph in a 45 mph zone, and so on. I guess it's the Stockhom Syndrome at work (I don't mean the Nobel prize, I mean the internalizing of the values of an opressor). The benefits of voting Republican are everywhere in the confused thinking of the voters. I can only guess what's wrong but I suspect it's all that crystal meth from the trailer park labs of Amerika. "Breaking Bad" is not just TV fiction, it's reality TV as we're living today. Maybe the world up-north is a better place, but they've got Connecticut, so I doubt it.

ah ha, this may be why the GOP does not want Obama as President. He would, as president, ask his Attorney General to look into "crimes" committed by former government staff.
Well, that is the elephant in the room, though -- whether racism is still strong enough in this country to make it impossible for a black man, no matter how qualified, to be elected president.
But to be fair this has been part of the conversation for the last year, and the same can be said about misogyny and Hillary's candidacy. Is Barack unelectable because he's black? Is Hillary unelectable because she's a woman? Are they both unelectable because of other issues besides race and gender?
I guess it's a milestone that either of them even had a shot at the nomination, and clearly one of them will get the nod, making another milestone... but will either of them truly be electable, breaking that glass ceiling?
How much hidden misogyny and racism is still left? How accurate are any polls in reflecting what real people will really do in the voting booth in November?
Have we progressed enough as a nation to make either dream possible?
