I agree with Nate Silver. If we learned anything from 2004 it was EXIT POLLS cannot be trusted.
vkobaya
That's silly. Exit polls have always been reliable and accurate. It's not exit polls that can't be trust. Republicans can't be trusted. That is, the results of the voting booth can't be trusted because the Republicans rigged the voting results.

When I dropped off my mail-in ballot yesterday I had to wait 30 minutes just to get to the box because of the number of people in line ahead of me doing the same thing. It was great to see so many people not just interested in the election but very enthusiastic about it.

Ha. 250,000 kids' votes in the Scholastic contest: Obama beats McBush by 18% overall.
Texas' early vote total (absentee + in-person) was 42% of registered voters. 42% of the 13.5 million eligible. 650K new voters were added AFTER the primaries -- and those are nearly all in the D column.
I have high hopes that Harris County (Houston) will turn solid blue by the end of today.

I'm so nervous I can't think straight. Please, please, please!
I see it more as McCain being halled off in a straight jacket, doctors injecting him again and again with tranquilizers as he bites, snaps, struggles, screaming, cursing and barking, to attack anyone he can. Cindy Hensley, of courses, stands aloof, he doesn't even admit to knowing who he is ... never did.

Do not worry! McCain / Palin will go down to the greatest Republican defeat in history. Why? Obama is VERY organized. How about millions of new registrations. Obama has had the money to challenge and defeat! How about over 3 million contributions from everyday folks. Obama is getting out the masses!
He is so much better than Warmonger McCain and Shopping Sarah 666 Palin.
I have a new reason to fear McCain (not that I didn't before). My son is enlisting tomorrow.

Live in Boston and had to wait in line from 8:00-9:15 this morning. Polls opened at 7am and the guy said he has never seen a line this long. people I saw seemed very excited. First time that I've ever had to wait in line that long as well.

Joe Kline from Swampland wrote a great piece on the death of Obama's grandmother. He said something I could not put into words yesterday when it was reported that Obama's grandmother died.
Today I still about what his grandmother faced back in the 70's. How far we have come in this woman's lifetime.
I remember back in around 1972 and I was at the National Zoo...I was 14 years old. I saw and interracial couple and their 3 year old kid. My dad said, " That's a shame..... that kid is going to have a difficult life ahead of him" "Why did that couple have to have that kid?"
I still remember that to this day.

That happened to me about the same time--my aunt (whom I loved dearly) saw a beautiful mixed race little girl and said the exact same thing.
Now, though, here in NC, it's not unusual to see a grizzled white grandpa with his mixed race grandchild out in public, although many people still make the same kind of remarks. What is more upsetting is why so many grandparents are raising grandchildren of all races these days?

Just heard the brilliant Tom Brokaw [snark] confuse materialism with consumerism, i.e., "We've been engaged in so much materialism for the last 15 years..."
Well, I suppose if Obama wins, as I expect him to, the Rethugs will toil mightily to investigate every state for voting irregularities, something they attempted to suppress in the last 2 elections, eh?

5-minute wait in Andover MA. That doesn't include the 15 minutes sitting in traffic to get to the high school gym where the polling was set up. There's only two polling places in town and this is the first time in years I've had to drive somewhere to vote, and that includes Los Angeles. Stupid, stupid idea. Multiple local polls may be more work for the city, but two giant polls is a hassle for voters esp. when none of them are easily walked to and nowhere near the bus line. If you want to vote here, you'd better have a ride.

I voted this morning in Northwestern Pa. No early voting here. Had about 30 in line. Only 1 of the two voting machines was in operation. Only 2 workers and they seemed like dolts. Took about 40 minutes. Can't imagine in Pittsburgh or big cities where more people not enough polling centers and will the elderly and young wait a couple of hours. I am waiting for calls to drive more people to vote. Have transported about 20 so far and wait is still 40 minutes to an hour.

We need a national voting law that includes the same WORKING voting machines for every state with at least one voting machine per 500 registered voters and early voting.
Well, we need to do something. I'm not sure you suggestion is all that practical, though. I live in a LA County which has a population of about 12,000,000 and at least half of those are voting age. That's means we would need about 12,000 machines just in this county. I think they need fewer machines and more polling places. Make it more convenient, especially in the urban centers where so much of the population is concentrated. And have competent people managing those locations, rather than the morons we seem to have now. It's embarrassing how the world's greatest democracy can't even get organized for its own elections.

When I say machines , i.e. polling places. Also, the votes still must be counted.

I totally agree. I've worked the polls, and the electronic machines are so much quicker than the paper ballots. Luckily, knock on wood too, I've never had a problem with the machines I've had in my places.

I used a paper ballot this year. It was long and time consuming about 20 minutes. Wow! Colorado had the lengthiest ballot in the country. I used the ballot because there were several complaints that voters selected Obama but the machine changed their vote to McCain.

If no one has suggested this previously ...
Obama's campaign website has lists of voters that you can call to GOTV today. The lists are available for all battleground states, complete with info about the voter and their polling location. If you can do nothing else today please try to do some calling for Barack.

I live in a very very small town in South Carolina, pop. 2500. I have never waited longer than 10 minutes to vote in any election at the fire station at the end of my street. This morning, I waited with 75-100 other people for just over an hour. The line was longer when I left than when I got there. I don't know who those people were voting for but it really is encouraging to see how deep into rural America this campaign's alarm clock has sounded. Everyone is at least awake.
South Carolina does NOT have early voting. My guess is that they will have early voting next time.

We are normally able to vote quickly at our site in Iowa, my partner did not vote early as I did. He had to wait 20 minutes. Also a couple of points, normally there are around 110 votes cast when we get there in the morning and today David was voter# 330!!!! Lots of African Americans and youths WERE voting. Good sign I think. Concerned about the problems being reported in Pa, Va, and Mo. And weather in the East also.

Here in Kansas City, I got up at 5:30 to get to the polling place. When I got there, the line was already around the corner from the church and the parking lot was full. It took about an hour to get in and out. Sadly, they had like 12 spots to seat for the hundreds of people that were there. People were standing all over the place with pencils trying to fill in on whatever surface they could find. They also only had one electronic machine, which I was looking forward to using but didn't want to wait in another long line. This being my 1st time voting in a Presidential election, I was floored at the turnout. Thankfully, I wasn't in the 5th Ward where they received the wrong voter rolls. Hopefully to many people didn't leave because they were frustrated with the extra wait. Can't wait to watch the results into the morning. Go Obama!!!

I was in line on Alcatraz Ave. on the Berkeley/Oakland line ... relatively short, maybe 60 people. A group of school children came up the sidewalk. They were all of seven years old maybe, and this one little boy stopped right in front of where I was in line and asked, wide-eyed and innocently, "Are you all voting for Barack Obama?" We all laughed and said "yes." It was so cute.

I voted in Tempe, AZ at 9am and only had to wait about 5 minutes. There were a bunch of people who were filling out provisional ballots. One woman definitely brought an expired license as an ID, but I didn't see the reasons for the other people.
My friend went earlier (maybe 6 or 7am) in the same polling place and waited about 45 minutes. I think the lunch and after work crowd will be a lot bigger. I was so excited to vote today I woke up so energized like it was a holiday. (It should be a holiday).
Early voting in the area had long lines but that was because there was only one place to go per most valley cities. The city is split up amongst polling places today.
Also, there was someone (I didn't catch what organization he was from) sitting outside the polling place for anyone that was having issues voting.

On a break from the polls gere in SoCal where I'm a pollworker -- over 200 voters in our precinct this morning -- about 25 people in line when we opened. Our precinct is around 900 voters, so this is amazing turnout. I'm sure we'll see over 500 voters by tonight, maybe closer to 600, and about a third of our precinct is mail in voters, so this will be about 80% to 85% turnout..... lots of new and first time voters, too.

My daughter's boyfriend's grandmother (get that?) moved here 50 years ago from Canada. Became a citizen a year later. Never registered. Never voted. Before this. She registered over the summer and voted early last week. She voted for Obama cuz "He's my boyfriend"!
I love that story.

Awesome awesome awesome. Just got back from my shift registering voters at our neighborhood polling place. There was a line when I arrived at 6:30--polls opened at 7. We registered hundreds. 2000 had voted by noon. The youth vote started to pour through the doors around 1 pm. I registered African immigrants who were voting for the first time and they all registered Democrat. How awesome is that? The lines were about 200 feet long from 7 to 1 pm, the wait over an hour. There will be another rush at 5.
I registered mostly unenrolled voters--those who declined to choose a party. The lawyer monitors were out in force. I hope they were also out in places where they were really needed......we didn't have a single challenge.
Best election ever, so far. And the bake sale goodies were the best ever, as well--stuffed grape leaves, homemade egg rolls, quiche and really good whole grain breads, in addition to the usual cookies and brownies. It was fun seeing parents walk the line at 8 am selling egg rolls. Thank you East End PTO!

I haven't seen much in the way of lines in NW Indiana, Lake County. The places I've driven past had no lines, plenty of cars though. Boss said he waited about 20 minutes this morning. A couple of coworkers in the southern part of the county said they had no wait at all. After work I'm heading over to the precinct I usually volunteer at and help with crowd control. Hopefully I'll be needed for that.
