Yes, and one article said it was about the German invasion of the Ukraine. 1/4 of the population died.

It was about German invasion of the Soviet Union. While Ukraine indeed suffered immensely as the result of the war, the songs and the performance itself were related not to the Ukraine specifically, but to the Great Patriotic War (as this part of the WWII was called in the Soviet Union) and its effect on the people regardless of where they lived in the Soviet Union.

I don't know what the music is at 2:39, but a song with a really similar sound (the one on the video reminds me of the other) is the Marty Robbins version of "Return to Me."

I've seen another artist do sand drawings on the internet and it really is fascinating watching them segue from one scene flawlessly, into another. The story she presented must have been something out of their history by the tearful reaction of the audience.

This is "Dark Night" by Sergei Trofimov I think. This song is from a 1943 Soviet film "Two Combatants"

Elegant, emotional and breathtakingly beautiful interpretation of a world gone crazy.

The singer's name is Mark Bernes (Марк Бернес in Russian). The song is "Dark Night" ("Тёмная ночь").
