AMERICAblog: Unemployment hits 15 year high

  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
The more money we give the banks, the more PEOPLE they fire and then, more money goes to their bottom line. The CEOs then get bigger retention bonuses for making the company so much money.
It is a simple process really.

John it is people losing jobs, not companies losing jobs.

And who's keeping track of the upsurge in concomitant suicides I wonder?
  • nicho · 1 year ago
At least the Republican plan is working. They want us scraping by, fighting each other for $5-an-hour jobs with no benefits -- while they zip around in their private jets counting their loot.

The next step in the plan -- already well underway -- is to bankrupt every state, city and town, as well as the federal governemnt, so they can put an end to all social programs and all government programs other than the military.

That's the plan -- and it's working like a charm. Grover Norquist is opening another bottle of champagne as I type this.
  • pdxprobert · 1 year ago
yup, that's the plan... starve the beast.. but whats so disgusting about this plan isnt what Grover has had in mind to do but that poor and middle class people who voted republican never thought about it not being there for them... they just thought it wouldnt be there for welfare kings and queens..... I bet 90% of the people who voted for republicans and would need the benefits of social security and medicare don't even know who Grover Norquist is... but they want us to respect them for their ignorance and call us elitist because we look a little deeper into who the players are and how their goals will impact us... apparently, not votng against your best economic interests in their world is a sign of being corrupt... the world of the right wing sheeple is the opposite of common sense...

These are just numbers, though. The human toll is much, much higher.

We're not having gifts this year, but I am decorating the house. That doesn't cost anything, since I've accumulated quite a bit over the years.

Still, knowing there are those out there jobless, homeless, without health care, and slowly losing their minds will cast a pall over me this time of year. How can it not?
  • pdxprobert · 1 year ago
I bought 2 gifts for people off of a giving tree at the community center I belong to... both were for adults living in assisted care centers for the disabled...... everybody I know has more than they could ever need for the rest of their lives... most of us do... how many pairs of shoes do we have and how many tv's do people have these days... we've got to get our priorities realingned... the days of collecting stuff are over... mass consumption needs to take a holiday....
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
I haven't bought any new clothes for over 2 years now except for underwear or the occasional item 75% off, and no shoes, either except for sandals and flip flops : ). I cleaned out my closet, only kept those items I would actually use, and gave the rest away to the thrift store down the street, where I do my own shopping. : )

I only buy something new for the house when something is absolutely unusable and needs replacing and that includes linens, pots & pans, dishes, etc.. I don't have a matching set of dishes anymore (horrors!), either. I've never been a pack rat, and even gave away some xmas decorations last year when I felt I had too many when someone else gave me some more. Only keep what I absolutely need to get by day to day and don't buy anything else. Things just don't mean that much to me--I'm way past that. I'm just in survival mode.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Concerning matching sets of dishes: by actual count, I have one set of mismatched dinner wear. It's potpourri set with pieces dating from the mid-60s until now. It includes lovely Japanese tenmoku along with first edition Corelle and chipped stonewear and a range of leftover pieces that friends handed to me as they moved away to other parts of the world or, in some poignant cases, passed into another world altogether. It's the Story of My Life set. :-)
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
I have a couple of plates of that Corelle, too...white. Gave some of it away, though, including teh cups whose handles aren't the usual closed ones. Sounds about what mine consists of but nothing Japanese unless you count the Nikko : ), including 2 beautiful bone china teacups and saucers which I'm afraid to set out.

Ive never felt this insecure about the future in my entire life.. 911 came closest, but this deliberate theft of our treasury leaves us all feeling helpless... and to think that a large portion of our population think the past 8 years was just fine and wanted more unaccountability... and nothings going to change thier minds... its as though they want to suffer and struggle...

I haven't heard anything from the MSM - not surprising I suppose - on whether or not any of our Congress-critters are asking the automakers why we should bail them out if they are subsequently going to slash more jobs. Any money should come with lots of strings, one of them being that they must not only NOT cut more jobs, but they must do all they can to create MORE jobs.

    Like that will happen...
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
That very well may be an impossible request in the short term. I can almost guarantee that any significant restructuring of the Big 3 will and arguably MUST include layoffs. I would imagine one of the biggest reasons they have't been profitable is that their labor force is probably a bit too large. I would assume that any real restructuring would include modernizing production methods and streamlining process and the R&D cycle...both are basically code words for doing more with less people.

Payroll is almost always the biggest single liability in any company and to expect them to return to profitability without significantly reducing wages or reducing the workforce, at least in the short term, isn't really that realistic.
  • katiec · 1 year ago
The problem is the unemployment figure does not include those whose unemployment has run out.
There are many, many more people out of jobs than the figures indicate.
We are facing very difficult times. Our government and the auto makers have to figure out a solution as losing all those jobs might be the straw that broke the camels back.

I get the feeling it's France, the fall of 1788. The shits about to hit the fan. The let them eat cake crowd is clueless.

Wait till GM fails because Congress dicks around too long waiting for Bush to grow a conscience or sense of urgency, then we'll be longing for the half a million new jobless months. Double digit unemployment is a serious possibility now. Where should I send my thank you card, George? White House, Crawford, or that new place?

The $2 million manse; is he keeping the "ranch" that never was one? Maybe some of the jobless could squat there...

    Storm the Bastille? How 'bout:

Storm Southfuck! (Isn't that the ranch in Dallas?)
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
The true un- and under-employment rate is probably around 15%.

What does it matter? The top 5% has theirs. Tuff luck to those who lost their jobs. Better luck next time.

Since 1973? That was a very odd year, the following year saw the collapse of Saigon and the rest of the decade was a blur of disco and polyester, a gasoline crisis, the Iranian Revolution, and casual sex. I miss the casual sex.

Unexpected? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Krugman predict 7% or higher?

We are witnessing the destruction of our country.

    It's because of GREED!
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
And the 533,000 figure was only for November, as they also revised Sept and Oct up another 200,000 losses and these numbers don't even reflect those who have just given up looking and whose benefits have run out.
This has to be the most pathetic administration in the history of our nation.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
And the Pathetic Clown in Chief was just on...as if he had anything to say that anyone will listen to.

  • ceu · 1 year ago
    I don't trust unemployment percentages.

Bush reformulated them his first term and purged many folks from being counted.

When the current figures are compared with unemployment rates prior to 2000, I want the new numbers run through the old formula.

Let me see here. ACORN Obama says he is going to bankrupt the coal industry. ACORN Obama says he is gonna raise taxes on corporations. ACORN Obama says that he is going to double the capital gains tax. ACORN Obama has an anti-business stance and record.

And you idiots who voted for him are SURPRISED that businesses are downsizing? Duh. They're battening down the hatches until Palin/Jindal replace Jimmy Carter Part Two in 2012.
