AMERICAblog: US News weighs in on Palin charging rape victims for rape kits

  • dreadpiraterobert · 1 year ago
That's right. In Sarah Palin's America, if you get raped, it'll cost you $1000 before we even pretend to believe you, you lying tramp. And if you can't afford it, well I guess you weren't raped. Probably asked for it anyway.

Justice for the rich is not justice.

In Sarah Palin's America, you also have to have the baby produced by the rape.

I agree.....this IS a story which normal people can relate to.

Perhaps this is merely about form, but it is a bit offensive when you use all caps. Please, will you consider treading lightly on the caps lock?

By the way, you "look" awfully familiar...

STOP focusing on Palin! If she hides from the press, so be it.

McCain is top of the ticket.

McCain would be Bush's third term.

McCain has voted with Bush over 90% of the time.

The NATIONAL DEBT is skyrocketing, and it is now owned mainly by China.

U.S. corporations are cutting retirement benefits for their employees.

People are losing their health benefits.

Jobs are being shipped over seas at an alarming rate.

Corporations and the wealthy have seen their taxes shrink over the last two decades thanks to hefty lobbying efforts.

Corporations have no patriotism to anyone but their share holders.

Corporations are seeking off-shore tax loopholes to stiff the American public.

The election is a month and a half away, and its ALL ABOUT:

Jobs, the Economy, Healthcare, Old Age Retirement, Balanced Budget, The WAR(s), U.S. prestige and standing around the world, and Saving your Social Security.

McCain is not the answer to these problems.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Whereas I agree that too much time is spent on Palin, at the same time her selection as VP shows the POOR JUDGMENT of McCain. The worse she looks, the worse HE looks.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
YOu play with the hand you're dealt. I think this is a huge story that would explode, and cause McCain to lose the credibility of his number one ally, Palin, and force him to stop talking about tax cuts. It's huge.
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
I agree. I can't see any way they can spin any explanation for this one. No wonder they are avoiding the press (other than he is an idiot and can't answer the questions).
  • woodroad34 · 1 year ago
Especially since the women voters who were for Hillary and now threaten to vote for McCain because of Sarah. They'll vote against their own specious interests if Sarah gets a foothold in the Whitehouse. They'll be the Log Cabin Republicans of feminism.
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
I do have to wonder though, isn't this the hand the Republican WANT us to play? Doesn't it take us away from McCain's own pitiful voting record? That he graduated 5th from the bottom of his class? That we wants to extend the Bush tax cuts to the wealthy? That he supports assault riffles in the hands of criminals? That he does not respect a woman's right to choice? That he voted against a bill to require the CIA abide by torture bans outlined in the Army Field Manual, even though he was a victim of torture?
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
I think Obama's group can handle McCain and Palin's "stories" simultaneously...kick them both in the balls at the same time and they can't jump to the other one's defense and make up more lies to cover for each other.
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
It certainly seem like there's enough for both, but seriously, my sweet old mom in Florida is oblivious to what a freak McCain is. She has NO CLUE what his voting record is... all she sees is war hero, old fellow dude... etc etc. And then she has the nerve to say, "I really need to hear what Obama will do specifically." It's like, wake up people!!! McCain is going to wreck social security and good luck with those tar balls and oil rigs off your pristine white beaches. McCain has already demonstrated what he'll do; how 'bout we focus on that.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
ask your Mom how long she worked and contributed to Social Security and share how long you have been paying into social security each month from your pay check for "X" number of years. Then tell her, if McCain and palin get their way, that money you and she and everyone else payed in is gone. GONE. We won't be getting a reimbursement check for the amount that was deducted from our paychecks all these years to invest in the great private market. It is GONE.
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
Oh believe me, I have talked and talked. But you know, I'm just the dumb liberal. What can we do? How can you watch the RNC and not think that's extremism?
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
It shows that McCain PICKED a coldhearted woman.

It shows that McCain didn't really vet her.

Frame your question about this "kit" around McCain.

    Example:
Reporter says, " Mr. McCain, did you know Sarah Palin was charging rape victims for the rape kit?"

See how you can do a double whammy?
  • jebauer · 1 year ago
    Yup... good idea...
  • curlytoes79 · 1 year ago
It focuses attention on the fact that McCain's one executive decision so far - his selection of VP - was thoughtless, irrational, and possibly dangerous. This woman has no business being a heartbeat away from the presidency - not only because she lacks the qualifications, but because she lacks compassion and good judgment. The rape kit fiasco is just one example of that.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
slightly OT - but remember yesterday, the talk about how McCain has traded in his vaunted honor just to win at all costs?

    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/indiv...

some guy at HuffPo thinks that's a loser argument, like so what? But I think the "dishonorable" label could go a long way towards persuading older voters and maybe women that McCain is not the grand, upstanding war hero he says he is...he's a lying liar.
  • Milli · 1 year ago
So according to Palin if you get raped, you have to essentially pay the police to have your crime investigated (that is if they "believe" that you were actually raped). Then if you get pregnant from that rape, she also wants to force you to have the baby. And then if you're poor and need state assistance to raise that baby, she and her fellow republicans will chastise you because you didn't wait to have a kid until you could afford it. Or worse, they'll just call you just a lazy slut who couldn't keep her legs closed so therefore you don't deserve any help.
And then John McCain will go on make jokes about how you actually liked being raped.

Palin is a heartless bitch. McCain is a heartless bastard.
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
"Palin is a heartless bitch. McCain is a heartless bastard."

God I love the truth. That's why I drop by here regularly. Now if we can just get a few "professional democrats" to pay attention to what in the hell is going on around them.
  • lilyannerose · 1 year ago
Any one else noticing that the MSM seems to be coming out of their eight year sleep? Of course, we still need to see what kind of pony and cart show they'll be putting on for that ABC interview. I'm beginning to think that Palin is freaking out the corporate puppet masters.
  • freshpaint · 1 year ago
Fascinating which section the USNews item got tucked into -- "Health and Money". This is telling us that, ok, maybe it's a story, but it isn't a big one, since it's just about women.

Am still asking why this is not on the front page of the NYT, Washington Post, etc. etc., and why it is that mostly unpaid bloggers have to vet this woman. Am getting kind of sick of doing someone else's job for free.

Perhaps this will come out (it damn well better) in the Biden/Palin debate. When it comes to actual support of women's issues, Joe Biden's credentials are impeccable.
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
fresh - I like that idea. Drop it during the VP debate. Biden should be able to slam dunk this moronic political whore with the greatest of ease.

Something tells me there should be a new tag line...instead of lipstick on a pig, how about deodorant on a pig. No matter how much you use, the thing still stinks.

Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies regularly pay for such exams, which cost between $300 and $1,200 apiece.

It also quoted Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon objecting to the law. Fannon was appointed to his position by Palin after her dismissal of the previous police chief. He said it would cost Wasilla $5,000 to $14,000 a year if the city had to foot the bill for rape exams.

Now think of that..... cost $300 each and could be up to $14,000 per year.... HOW many rapes are they having in a town of 5000-7000 population? .... 46 rapes in one year.....
    THAT is some crime wave.....
  • woodroad34 · 1 year ago
    From over at Towleroad.com:

"The investigation has inspired women's domestic abuse groups to get involved because Monegan had embraced their cause. They say Palin has failed to take action to help them, and Alaska is first in the nation for rape and second in the nation for domestic murders by men."

    The pig has no lipstick.

I agree with John that this is a big story, but the Republican spin machine has reinvented SP as Cinderella and us as the wicked step-sisters trying to destroy her (as false as it is). Everybody loves that story and the opposition will rally around their princess to ensure she keeps her crown and her prince (yech). It's really kind of a classic battle they've reinvented for their purposes. Pitting their version of the supposed storybook heroine against the evil forces. Think Princess Di vs. Royal Family, etc. I'm not comparing the stories except to say the have the same dynamics.

It will be very difficult to take that away from her with the forces now assembled around her. That makes the story that much more difficult to switch to McCain.

I'm not saying not to try. Just my strange analogy.
  • suzie2kids · 1 year ago
Has anyone bothered to check who passed the law? She was on the City Council from 1992-1996 and then she was mayor. If the law was indeed passed while she was either on the City Council or the Mayor, then yes I agree wholeheartedly. However if it was a law that was already in force, well, then, as you say above, "Nothing to see here".

I'm wondering how many rapes take place in Wasilla, with its so highly touted "small town" and "family" values... Are there so many that a move like Palin's would make more than just a dent on the town's budget and effectively save them a substantial sum of money? Why would she even think of such a thing? Is rape one of the more popular local pastimes, a widespread (and thus costly for the town) occurrence?
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
The relationships between their pentacostal church (Palin's) and the town charging women for rape kits needs to be explored.... I find it highly unlikely that this "policy" was an "oversight" or an effort to keep taxes low... There has to be some serious intimidation going on in that town to keep the women folk quiet, besides charging them for their own rape kit.... can you imagine the Chief of police being at all helpful to the victim, or even attempting an investigation? Does he present the victim with a choice:

"Well, little lady if you want me to investigate this so called "rape" we've got some paper work to take care of first. The rape kit will cost $1,200.00, do you have the cash on you? No? How about a credit card? .... Well, we can't move on this until we get the kit paid for."
