AMERICAblog: Vindication for Howard Dean's 50-state strategy who tells us: Don't blow it

  • dad · 1 year ago
    Howard!!!
  • seohio · 1 year ago
I was one who criticized Dean relentlessly after losing the last few elections--even called for his dismissal. But I am also the kind of person who can stand up and admit I'm wrong. So, here goes--I was wrong--it is apparent that Dean's strategy is paying off. The Democrats have a legitimate chance to win several Bush states, and we are holding onto the traditional Democratic leaning states.

Hats off to Dean, and once again, I was wrong about him and the strategy.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
Good for you....I think a few of the higher ups in the Dem Party owe Dean an apology.

    Kudos Dean !!
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
I was a Dean critic who came around too.

But I don't understand what you mean by "losing the last few elections."

His first two elections as DNC Chairman were the 2006 midterms and this election.

I don't see any losses on his watch.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
    good job, Dean
    now bring it to Texas.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I always liked Howard Dean. When others were throwing him under the bus I thought Dean had the right approach.

Today Howard should be vindicated whether Obama wins or not, the 50 state strategy works.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I'm not so sure about all that. I think Obama had some fairly strong words with Dean in the fabled back room before this strategy was settled into place.
  • PeteWa · 1 year ago
How nice that the Hill doesn't bother to mention that the "infamous scream" was just manufactured bullshit by the press, as anyone who has seen the footage from the crowd knows all too well.
    Is our journalists lernin?
No, they never cared for the truth so much as the "story" they wanted the truth to be.

And Rahm Emanuel is still a choad.

There was a net site during the primaries that showed the voting by counties of each state. I can't find it this morning and it is driving me nuts. Does anyone remember where this site is located?
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
The CNN election site has the county by county breakdowns....

  • tigergrrldc · 1 year ago
I never got the whole "scream" thing. What was the big deal?
  • MyVoice · 1 year ago
It was an easy attack to take him out of the primaries- I felt both sides did the attacks which took the best candidate out right off the bat. Gov. Dean was a great governor here in VT.
  • KerrynowCampau · 1 year ago
I still haven't gotten over how easy it was to take him out.

That blew my mind. I realized the media is crazy.
  • Keith_in_Southwest_France · 1 year ago
I believe it was CNN that had the scream. We were at a Democrats of Southwest France event here in Toulouse several weeks later and Jim Hightower was the guest speaker. He said that CNN was trying to make sure that no one that would be a strong contender to take on Bush would be on the ticket. He said that the type mike they were using, and also the way they edited the sound made it seem like a scream. People who were there at the event did not know about the scream until they saw it on the network news programs.

If Obama wins . . . from whom will Reid (R-Nev) and Pelosi (R-SF, Cal) take their orders ? Per Pelosi, GWB is "a lovely man".
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
    *rolls eyes*
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
really? You think this is an actual issue?
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
I used to volunteer in Nancy's district office in SF and perhaps you have to know her to understand that GWB is "a lovely man" is a put down. She uses that when she has nothing good to say about one.
  • vfink · 1 year ago
" I love the tidbit that Dean was interviewed from the home state of John McCain on the day before the election."

...and hey, here's a snap of some of my pals from work at said Tucson rally.

    Signs: well received.

I just got back from voting in California - I got there at 7:10 AM, and there was already a line. When I put my ballot in the optical scanning machine, it registered me as voter #102. I have lived here for 7 years, and I have never seen a turnout like this.
  • kladinvt · 1 year ago
Go Howard! Hopefully all the old school naysayers that didn't believe in the 50-state strategy are now bowing to Howard Dean. His pioneering use of the Internet back in 03/04 paved the way for Obama's win today!
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
even if they start calling the races early, VOTE ANYWAY...

we need to win down-ballot races too. vote like hell.

  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
I thought it was crazy when Dean took over the DNC.

"That's it," I thought, "the lunatics have taken over the asylum."

    Boy, was I wrong.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
    Howard Dean is awesome!

We wouldn't be where we are today if it weren't for his forward thinking.

    <standing ovation>
  • PissedSissy · 1 year ago
STILL a Deaniac. As much as I like Obama, I wish Dean had had his chance at the White House. Great man.
  • KerrynowCampau · 1 year ago
I hope Obama gives him a prominent position in his administration
  • pertusi · 1 year ago
Well done Howard Dean; he's probably been able to do more for the Democratic Party in the long-term than he could have done as President.....and no one could likely have done his job any better.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
Just drove by my usual voting place...very little activity, so I hope all the old Rethug farts around here decided to stay home. Sadly, this is a Rethug stronghold, racist, backwards, reactionary. The Dem Party is located mostly in the county seat which has Dems in the city govt, but it's on the western side of this county. I just can't imagine even the Dem mayor of that 10,000 person town running for governor of NC, much less VP of the US.

Hopefully, we'll unseat Patrick McHenry although that may be a slim chance.

I just hope the rest of the country has better better politics than the crooks in this county!
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
    I'm rooting for you!

My city is it's own county and we have our own bullcrap here. I know my congressperson will easily be re-elected but I just can't resist voting for the batshit crazy one. Just to send a message.
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
Scott, I'm not pleased with some of Nancy's decisions either but I'll vote for her because Cindy Sheehan has become a rather sad symbol of grief gone wild and I believe that voting for her is counter to what she really needs: therapy. I sincerely hope she will seek help because Casey probably would prefer that to a mother who sounds manic and attributes her views to his death.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
    I agree with you 100%.

And I apologize for using the term 'batshit'. Guano would be more appropriate.
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
No worries. I'm accustomed to saying it like it is.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Patrick McHenry is just one airport bathroom stall or truckstop restroom away from going down in flames. Unfortunately, his defeat probably won't happen at the ballot box in your part of NC.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
MSNBC certainly giving that Aryan Bitch plenty of air time...I swear, how can anyone vote for someone who sounds like she's trying out for the cheerleading squad?
  • bejammin075 · 1 year ago
Why doesn't the godddamned number work? I have shit to report on GOP activity at my polling place! I called 1-877-US4-Obama (1-877-874-6226) and the fucking number doesn't work! I got the number from Dean's video in this link, and it doesn't work. I called my local Obama HQ, they had another number to try. That doesn't work either! The lines aren't busy, they just don't work.

    WTF!?!?
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
if you think you are witnessing problems with voting, http://www.ourvotelive.org/home.php or call 866-OUR-VOTE, These are run by Electronics Frontier Foundation and they've been on the front line in dealing with voter fraud, especially the "questionable" electronic voting machines.
  • bejammin075 · 1 year ago
OK, the PA hotline is now working (1-877-572-6226). I've reported it. A McCain worker was 5 feet from the voting booths, asking each voter if they were a registered Republican. She was crossing the names off her list of registered Republicans, so that towards the end of the day they can focus their GOTV on the Republicans who haven't voted yet. She was doing partisan work for the McCain campaign within 5 feet of the voting booth.

Greg, never, ever put your email address as a hotlink in any forum, you are just begging for a webcrawler to get your info and sign you up for spam.

Two years ago I sat in a class on elections and our political scene and listened to the jerk instructor call the 50 state strategy "folly." I pushed back, insisting that it would pay off big but he was convinced that spreading all of that money so thinly was not smart. I'm going to enjoy saying, Told you so, to that idiot (Even in San Francisco we have such troglodytes).

The Democratic Party has been shrinking for years because it ceded its natural base to right wing extremists and the only way to take back our constituency was the 50 state strategy. Howard Dean is my hero.
  • EmGD · 1 year ago
Now if only he would actually go and rub Carville's and Begala's noses in shit. I remember them laughing and deriding the strategy, even this year. Looks like Dean knows that trying to pin your hopes on peeling off one of two states (Florida or Ohio) every year doesn't actually win you anything.

Yeah, the economy turned to shit on 15 September (exactly! according to the MSM) which gave Obama a vaulting lead. But Dr. Dean, my dream man, laid the groundwork for Obama's campaign to be competitive in more places than 2004. Dean and Obama: gotta be a winning combination! (And the 50 State Strategy helped overthrow Clinton domination over the Party, and got rid of that loser Terry McAuliffe).
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
This is the saddest thing to me...Dukakis, for a HELMET in a tank for gods sake, Dean for a "scream" (that wasn't even...it was isolated and thus sounded weird, just as all the youtube takes of isolated vocals sound weird) and yeah...EVEN Daddy Bush for not having seen a bar code scanner before....

I couldn't stand any of the Bushes, but NOBODY ought to be "out of a race" because of something that ridiculously inane.
