This reminds me of that HUGE Obama rally (90,000) at Manassas at 10:00 p.m. the night before the election. It brought tears to my eyes to see so many people there at the site of the opening battle of the Civil War. It was then that I felt confident Obama would win.

Yeah, I live outside NOVA and boys, they NEEDED change down yonder!

This place is not just steeped in history. It's more like STUCK in history.

It really needed a shot in the arm from people who aren't so me & mine ONLY...it may be improving. We actually got our first Whole Foods healthfood complex down here in Central Virginia and it's so funny to see the natives walking through it--just spellbound by modern society!

Welcome to the 21rst Century, Virginny! You'll like it!

That being said, I'm all for history in some respects, such as providing some amazing national leaders, along the lines of these great sons of Virginia:

    George Washington
    Thomas Jefferson, and
Henry "give me liberty or give me death" Patrick

Where is that raw Courage and Integrity NOW???!
That is so what we NEED!

I hope Obama can BRING IT ON!!!

America and her proud history deserve so much better than the current abomination....

So, thanks to Virginia for setting the original examples.

Sounds like Virginia is going the way of Ohio or Illinois, with a very urbanized North and a conservative rural south. Unfortunately for the GOP, Chicago overwhelms Illinois, and in Ohio, Democrats have made strides based on the lousy economy and the fact that urban votes actually got to VOTE in 2008.

Yeah, VA will soon not just be blue but reliably blue . . . if it isn't there already. I left VA about 9 years ago and we were pretty close then.

What a lot of people have missed is that talk radio with the likes of Sean Hannity and Laura Ingram have done much to turn the country blue with their hate mongering.

Demographics is getting interesting in some places often considered vital. People are moving in, people are moving out. I'm wondering who moved away from northern Virginia and where'd they go? At times, it seems like white flight is happening from Florida, filling up western North Carolina. Lo and behold, Florida went slightly blue this year. Is something similar going on in Virginia?

Seems to me Florida has never been deep red, not in my memory. They went for Gore and Nader in 2000. There's only about maybe 8-10 states that are almost exclusively red, and hell, even Idaho elected a Dem this election for 1 of their only 2 House seats. 'Course it was the laughing stock nutcase Bill Sali who got defeated, who was hated by even some of his Republican colleagues.

    Ball Of Confusion Lyrics

Review The Song (7) Print the Lyrics

Send "Ball Of Confusion" Ringtones to Cell Phone

    1, 2... 1, 2, 3, 4, Ow!
Eddie: People moving out, people moving in. Why, because of the color of their skin.
Run, run, run but you sure can't hide. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
Vote for me and I'll set you free. Rap on, brother, rap on.
Dennis: Well, the only person talking about love thy brother is the...(preacher.)
And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the...(teacher.)
Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration, Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation.
Ball of confusion. Oh yeah, that's what the world is today. Woo, hey, hey.
    Paul:
The sale of pills are at an all time high.
Young folks walking round with their heads in the sky.
The cities ablaze in the summer time.
And oh, the beat goes on.
    Dennis:
Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul.
Shooting rockets to the moon, kids growing up too soon.
Politicians say more taxes will solve everything.
    Melvin:
    And the band played on.
So, round and around and around we go.
Where the world's headed, nobody knows.
    [Instrumental]
Oh, great GoogaMooga, can't you hear me talking to you.
    Just a ball of confusion.
Oh yeah, that's what the world is today.
    Woo, hey, hey.
    Eddie:
Fear in the air, tension everywhere.
Unemployment rising fast, the Beatles new record's a gas.
    Dennis:
And the only safe place to live is on an Indian reservation.
    Melvin:
    And the band played on.
Eve of destruction, tax deduction, city inspectors, bill collectors,
Mod clothes in demand, population out of hand, suicide, too many bills,
Hippies moving to the hills. People all over the world are shouting, 'End the war.'
    Melvin:
    And the band played on.
    [Instrumental]
Great GoogaMooga, can't you hear me talking to you.
    Sayin'... ball of confusion.
That's what the world is today, hey, hey.
Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya.
    Sayin'... ball of confusion.
That's what the world is today, hey, hey.
Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya.
    Sayin'... ball of confusion.

OK, I'm going to cause some controversy here about the WAPO's assumption that "a growing number of nonwhite residents, particularly Hispanics" is accurate. Firstly, most Hispanics do not consider themselves "nonwhite." Secondly, and here I'm only speaking of NC's experience where there was a steep rise in the number of Hispanics, too, over the last 10 years, most of the influx have been comprised of those in the country illegally who were drawn here because of the housing boom and they are not eligible to vote. Since housing construction has pretty much collapsed, even here in NC, most are self-deporting or trying to find jobs elsewhere, heading for Texas or the southwest. I expect that is happening, or will happen, in other states, like Virginia, as well.

If you live in an area like this where there has never been a traditionally high Hispanic population, you can see the shrinking of the Hispanic population just by observing--fewer out in public, more apts available, Hispanic businesses closing because the customer base is no longer there, fewer Hispanic kids in schools. In this county, one personal observation was that when I had to take my son to the emergency room a month ago, there were no Hispanics there at all, where previously there would have been a number of them. There are no longer any Hispanics working at the local popular restaurant, either. The local bodega, opened this past year, lasted less than six months for lack of customers.

The fact is, most illegal immigrants were here for the jobs, not to become citizens, or were willing to stick it out in a bubble economy until something could be done about their status. Now that the job market is collapsing, few will be willing to stay in an atmosphere where even citizens can't find jobs. And while E-Verify is controversial, not many employers are willing to take a chance on someone without the proper papers.

The "Obama effect" turned out people who hadn't voted in years or never voted, first time young voters, and even Rethug turncoats. Quite simply, people were ready for change and didn't trust Rethugs to install another idiot. In the main, this country has learned a lesson about politics, and I'm hoping it sticks.
