I didn't know Sykes was gay - I imagine a lot of people didn't, but like she said, all she wanted to do was live her life, have her friends accept her, and have a nice boring marriage like the rest of us "straight" people.
It's so unfair as to be disgusting. Really disgusting. Good on her for standing up...but shame on the rest of us for when we don't.

.... the church had been riding high ever since the successful 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the gay marriage fight and other recent setbacks have forced the church to deal with skepticism over its faith and history. .... First there was former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's unsuccessful run for the Republican presidential nomination. Many in the church were shocked that Romney's Mormon faith was a source of discomfort for some voters. "Latter-day Saints were just amazed to think there was such bigotry in the country," church spokesman Michael Otterson said. ....
Some have suggested that Mormons might have been eager to cement partnerships with other churches, especially because evangelical voters were particularly distrustful of Romney's faith.
This song was originally written by Tom Robinson for the London Gay Pride march in 1976. It was released in 1978 as one of a four tracks EP called "Rising Free". BBC Radio 1 refused to play this song and instead played the less controversial opening track "Don't Take No For An Answer".

Today is the day by which California Attorney General Jerry Brown must respond to the Cal Supreme Court about Prop 8. The Court wants to decide if they will hear the suits brought against Prop 8, and they gave Brown until today to comment. Usually when a suit is filed directly to the Supreme Court without first going through the lower courts, it is rejected without hearing comments. That the Court wants comments indicates that they are considering hearing the cases. Fingers crossed.
Frankly, I'd be surprised if the Court would allow the ballot initiative process to result in a constitutional amendment that in effect ties the Court's hands and takes them out of the process of protecting the rights of minorities. Imagine, for example, if black people had been unable to go to the courts for protection of their basic rights, and instead had to follow the will of the majority forever. Hmmmm......

Didn't know Wanda was gay but have loved her comic talent for years...Also, back when I watched C-SPIN, I loved the regular caller I knew was Wanda yelling at the plastic C-SPIN hosts and fascist think tank panalists with her usual brilliance. Regarding this "redefining marriage" thing that gets fundie panties in such a twist...It seems to me 50+ post war and 40+ post sexual revolution years of heterosexual funny business redefined marriage far more than gay people ever could have during our brief 20+ years out of the world closet. All of us first bore marriage witness to our parents' relationship(s) as we gay people didn't quite magically appear on lily pads. Broken heterosexual marriages redefined marriage and we gay people would be better served by creating our own traditions and not emulating the heterosexual failures. 20 years ago the great scifi writer Samuel Delany in his terrific novel "Stars in My Pockets Like Grains of Sand" (I'm still awaiting the 2nd volume Sam) coined the terrific idea of a "non biological family stream". As heterosexuals broke and redefined marriage let us redefine family. Too long have heteros held a monopoly in Western Civ...A little competition just might strengthen all of us.

NEWS: In California Gov. Schwarzenegger told George Stephanopoulos that he will declare a legal edict if advised to do so by Attorney General Jerry Brown that would declare existing same-sex marriages valid in the state. Brown, who must defend Prop 8 in court, has also said that he considers the existing 18,000 gay marriages performed in California to be valid despite Prop 8, which he says is not retroactive.
Schwarzenegger said he would not be joining Democrats who are filing a challenge to Prop 8 in the court. He also said that although his personal belief is that marriage is between a man and a woman, he thinks the Supreme Court was right when they declared denying gays marital rights to be unconstitutional, and he believes the court will do it again when it looks at Proposition 8.
A week ago, Schwarzenegger told CNN's John King that opponents of Prop 8 should not give up in their quest to have Proposition 8 overturned.
Of course this is the man who, when running to recall Democratic Governor Gray Davis, described himself as totally gay friendly. But later, after winning the recall election, he TWICE vetoed gay marriage when it twice passed the State legislature. Don't you just love it when foreigners come to our country and take away our rights? I'm in the unique position of being able to say that my marriage was twice vetoed by a weight lifter from Austria. Well, maybe he's beginning to see the light. Or maybe he's starting to need gay support again, since the state is now in worse condition than it was when he successfully recalled the former Governor. Something tells me that this is yet another Republican who should not be trusted.

Schwarzenegger's performance in this long running battle would be almost comical - the ultimate example of a politician afraid to take a solid position ( with a lot of others including Obama in second place) - if the result on election day hadn't been so tragic.

True, except I do believe Schwarzenegger has taken a solid position. He has supported BOTH sides. He has courted the gay vote, shot down gay marriage, and now stands solidly beside us. Except of course that he thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman only. But he believes the Court was right in saying that it is unconstitutional to deny gay marriage, even though he twice vetoed it, saying that it should be up to the people to decide, which they now have, and with whom he now disagrees.... well, except of course that he agrees that marriage should be between a man and woman only... . but otherwise he agrees with us gays. You know, I really think this whole thing is his attempt to get Maria to allow him back into the bedroom. Why did that woman, a Kennedy, marry a Republican moron? Mixed marriages should be forbidden by law!

To paraphrase Yamamoto, all the Prop 8 supporters have "done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." Go Wanda and all of us who are finally standing up and demanding respect and equality!
I have a feeling that the religious right wingnuts have no idea what they have done. They propably thought after November 5th all the protests would die down. Now it's spreading everywhere.

I've noticed on many of the Prop 8 youtube videos that there are tons of threats of violence against gays and lesbians.
You can file a complaint on the comment and get the users account suspended or banned. I think we need to send a message that even though the internet is about free speech; you tube will not allow violence to be advocated against gays.
