AMERICAblog: Wash Post: McCain Blinks

  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
In the picture, McCain looks pissed his ploy backfired on his butt.
  • slappymagoo · 1 year ago
OK, this might seem off-topic, but a picture is no longer worth a thousand words. Pro video captures images in at least 30-frames-per-second (HD captures even faster). Pro photograpers can still capture many many shots in a second. It's so easy to pick a still image that makes your subject look angry, unhinged, stoned, lecherous, whatever, and use it to bolster your argument.

Trust me, I think McCain's nuttier than a mass-produced, saturated-fat-laden granola ban, but to comment on anyone's image is unfair. I could just as easily take footage of you from your holiday vacation video and find an image that makes you look like a child molester. Don't mean squat

    McCain's nuttier than a mass-produced, saturated-fat-laden granola

    Ha!
If Russert was here he'd be hungry...
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
Nuttier than chinese chicken salad. I would love to hear Russert too. I miss him.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
I am sure of it, but I'm not running for president.
And, sorry to say, McCain is appearing in public more and more "looking" as if he is either very sick or very pissed. And that, my friend, is very important to voters.
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
An article in the current New Republic answers the question "What happened to McCain's honor?" in view of such dishonorable tactics as continuing to run ads full of lies well after the lies were exposed and debunked.

The article argues that McCain believes no one loves this country more than he does, certainly not Obama. Therefore he's entitled to the presidency and if he has to lie and lie repeatedly to win it--well, there's a bigger truth out there.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
I saw a 30 second shocking 527 ad in FL last night with doctors discussing McCain's age, the return rate of cancer, and challenging McCain to release his medical docs. It was scary...very scary. Was it fair? Not sure. Was it truthful...yes it was.
  • jcgraham77 · 1 year ago
what you are missing is that the media will filter through these images until they find one that fits the scenario. the image may not represent his face throughout the past few days but it does represent how the media now sees the campaign as do we. it represents the mood of the mccain campaign. i like it.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Yeah, this worked just about as well as his inserting his presence into hurricanes Gustav and Ike. As Barney Frank said the other day, he (McCain) should keep his Mighty Mouse tactics to himself.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Gotta hand it to Obama.

He called the Crazy Old Man's bluff and didn't blink.

    He's got some brass.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
In case anyone is wondering about Mighty Mouse, it was a cartoon just like McCain is a cartoon.

Notice his left hand is clinched....
Dole used to keep a pen in his hand that didn't work so people wouldn't shake it or something along those lines...
notice McSame has a piece of paper in his "clenched" hand....probably for a similar reason.....
I noticed this clinched fist thing the last couple of weeks....
He's got to be ill...something is going on....
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
    He looks like a corpse.
  • Ginger_FL · 1 year ago
Heard a comment on Stephanie miller's show this morning....
Name coined for him was something like McCadavor?

I think he looks like Robo-Cop myself. He looks very Mechanical, Robotic...forced...lifeless....
Like a puppet but we can't see the master's hand shoved into his back.

It will be interesting to see how much his left eye is drooping tonight. Stress will do that to ya.

He'd mortgaged the North Pole pretty heavily and invested in pre-Republic Estonian slave-labor Toy factories before Ryan O'Neal got him hooked on meth.
  • jmcon007 · 1 year ago
Well, at least he can stop strutting around the Capital with a cell phone stuck to his ear and a Lieberman and a Graham on each arm. How fraudulent! McCain-Palin.....What an enormous national embarrassment. Shit!
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I would hope anyone thinking Obama might not have the backbone necessary to lead this country take another look. He stood his ground, in the name of the American voter, and confronted adversity with grace and determination.
  • ivyfree · 1 year ago
I wonder if Cindy McCain's assets are as well protected as the McCains would like them to be? She's got a LOT to lose and she might be expecting her husband to protect her. Is that expression an "Oh shit, I have to go home and tell Cindy what's going on" expression?
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
Cindy isn't that dumb. When she refused to release her tax returns, she claimed that she and her husband keep their money separate and file separate returns. So the odds are that she's never torn up the prenup.
  • artisticfreedom · 1 year ago
I've seen that expression before, on the film "scanners".
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Look for sad., put-upon Johnny tonight...You know the guy who is used to handling pain (wink, wink!) and overcoming great obstacles (even more hinting and rapid eye blinking) in his life.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
yep, it's gonna be a freakin blink-o-rama tonight...
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
That should be "between HIM and Obama."
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
Obama has handled the campaign well -- it would have been very easy to have created sympathy for McCain by attacking him. Obama made McCain trip himself up.
  • MnDem · 1 year ago
Obama stood his ground when everyone was telling him that he had to pick Hillary for VP. McCain couldn't stand up to the fundamentalists when he wanted Lieberman, and was forced to take Caribou Barbie.

According to news reports, Obama took the lead in the meeting yesterday for the Dems. McCain deferred to the crazy right in the House. We don't know what McCain's position is on the bailout, but he couldn't take the lead, and was again forced to take a back seat.

Obama should do an ad with a wild roller coaster ride on it, because that's what we'll be on if McCain gets elected.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Let's review Pelosi for a moment. The dems gained control of Congress in 2006 on very strong get the US out of Iraq sentiment. Two years later the Congress has done nothing to get the US out of Iraq.

Now, in a little less than two weeks after Bush (whose approval rating on the economy is 16%) comes begging with his Wall Street clown in tow for a corporate handout of up to $1,800,000,000,000 in taxpayer funds the Congressional dems are in a position to support our idiot in chief not knowing what they are getting into. The consequences will be "dire" if the Congress does not hand over the funds by today. We are standing here today without a bailout bill and I think I can still breath.

Pelosi has the votes if it must pass. Use your power or shut up. Hopefully her proven cowardice will overcome her proven stupidity and she will not bring the bailout bill up for a vote.

Letting this pig in a poke die comports with public sentiment, as it is clear the public does not support this bailout gift in an manner.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080926/ap_on_el_pr...

Undaunted by the concept of represetative democracy, blind to the political landscape right in front of her eyes and clearly oblivious to reason Pelosi nonetheless continues to push this bailout as if she views handing trillions of taxpayer dollars to the money grubbing thieves of Wall Street as some sort of categorical imperative. The bill "has to pass"?

    http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE4...

Black is white and white is black.

If this bailoput passes Reid and Pelosi need to suffer a mighty and public demise. Imo they jeopardize the very future of the democratic party.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
No one is happy about this "bailout" ....but everyone on both sides needs to chill out. You have to remember, that the gov. is aquireing assets and will be getting paid on a monthly basis to pay back those loans at foreclosure rates. It's not just dropping 700 billion out of an airplane and hoping it all gets swept up by the right people. Yes, it' awful, and shocking. But there will be almost an instant stream of cash paying it back. This is to keep the banks from folding.

When we have Palin saying we could be in a "great depression" by Mondya, Bush on the airwaves using verbose inappropriate languege, and McCain running around like henny penny. It's no wonder evryone is freaking out.

    Chill out, everyone!
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Banks will fail even if this trillions leave DC. The reverse auction will cause immediate bank failures as the assets are priced on the low end. Treasury/Wall Street/Greed incanrate will be back for more trillions count on it. They cannnot figure this out in a week.

The dems are walking on exceptionally dangerous ground here.

No, get back to your Wall Street job before your employer folds.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Also think about this scenario the dems cave and give Bush ungodly trillions to bail out wall street against strong voter sentiment. The repubs along with McCain vote no. Obama votes yes with dems.

October 27th or so the market collapses.

    Democratic decimation at the polls.

The dems know nothing about the market and are being led down the primrose path by Bush and Paulson. All they need to do is say no until after the election.

Looks like the same calm determined approach that won Obama the nomination is working now too. McCain looks like a crazy old guy shouting at the kids to get off of his lawn or he'll...... and he doesn't.
Tonight's debate will be like shooting wolves from a helicopter.

No, no ,no, they said they wanted to see Palin in 'porn', not 'corn'. sheesh!

    Wrecks their strategy.
  • Donna in Rome · 1 year ago
Good grief, I can't believe it! He actually wrote, "between HE and Obama"???
HE, as the object of the preposition "between"???
I know people often mess it up when the pronoun is in the second position (saying "between Jane and I" instead of "and me"), evidently thinking it sounds more genteel, but this is ridiculous, especially from a professional writer. :-(
  • mrspeel2 · 1 year ago
With all the turmoil in the world right now, all you can complain about is
proper english? I think you must be leading a very boring life, Donna.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
Levity is always a good thing. If you don't laugh, you cry. And proper English is always in style. :-)
  • mmedefarge · 1 year ago
I agree. Bad grammar makes me gnash my teeth. There are already too many things making me do that . I will probably be the first patient in my dentist's practice to come in with a broken nightguard.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
BTW: Palin says "nukyalar", instead of "nuclear". That's reassuring.....
  • Donna in Rome · 1 year ago
Actually, if there's one thing my life is NOT, it's boring. To begin with, I live in Rome, Italy... :-)

So you believe we have to comment only with the utmost gravity and only on the serious issues?

I, for one, consider grammar and spelling very important, at least for professional writers. I do translations for a living, and I can't help it, but these things jump out at me and my "ignoramus" alarm goes off.

Plus, as I saw further down in the thread, I'm not the only one who noticed this.

In any case, unlike McCain, I can walk and chew gum at the same time. Can't you? ;-)

I can't help but wonder if stem cell research might have actually helped John and others like him.

    It gives one pause.
  • bejammin075 · 1 year ago
Probably not. The tremendous benefits we'll likely get from stem cell research are a long way off. The embryonic stem cells offer the most promise for research and cures, but even if we'd been going at full speed, it'll still take years to come up with the break through therapys.

There has been a lot of use of the word 'blink' by Palin and McCain. I love conscious choice of the post to use this word.

Blink, blink, blink... It's a funny word.
  • Ginger_FL · 1 year ago
Anyone listening to Hartman on the radio today??

Lots of discussion about the Bailout and Wall street...

He is wondering as are other callers if the Dem's aren't being HAD by the same scare tactics that were used to get us into Iraq and push the Patriot act...

Is there really a crisis??? Markets have been functioning just fine since the "bailout" was announced......

BTW, Automakers are going to get a Bailout as well...little being mentioned about that in the Press....
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
There was mention of the automakers, but I do not think that is part of it.
  • Ginger_FL · 1 year ago
Apparently the automakers bailout is another bill being worked on.

Screw all these bailouts....the 90% who have been suffering under this economic experiment need a bailout and the uber rich can just suck it up....so they have to forgo having a mega wedding or gold plated birthparty for an overly spoiled brat...they will get over it.
  • nsr · 1 year ago
Yeah, I never thought I'd agree with the House Repubs. Although there are House Dems that don't like it-- DeFazio said it's "bs". But the leaders all seem to think Bush is responsible with money, and $600 bil is ok. Great way to let the GOP up off the mat.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
Unfortunately... I'm going to have to watch youtube for the debate...

I've got tickets to Candide tonight... talk about torn between two things :-(

    ugh.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
    Remember the Titanic?

Well, the Republican ship is about to sink completely tonight. COMPLETELY.

And the hilarious part is how utterly clueless Republican honchos are that they are about to be made completely irrelevant for at least 8 years in about 7 hours.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
Careful, they are counting on low expectations. Even a clock is right twice an hour. McCain could pull off a lucid debate with the right medication. Unfortunately, as long as the guy doesn't start drooling and mumbling his "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" song, the pundits could call the evening victorious for him. Until Nov 5, don't let yourself underestimate the lengths these thugs will go to pull out a win.

I said yesterday the debate would go on with or without him. Let them wire him up it doesn't matter, Obama is armed with the truth, all this has to be is a tie, throw some questions in about the economy and McGramps will need a nap that he won't be allowed to take. Cranky, way past bedtime, alot of air travel in the last 3 days, bad color, gotta stand for a long time, all his physical disabilities, good nite Johnny.

Let him wear a wire if he wants. He'll be tired & exhausted, cranky, nervous, frazzled. Having the crutch of listening and repeating from an ear piece would not help him. I personally have very high expectations for this debate. Oh please, please, please let it be so!

McCain is stupid on stilts. He thinks he can fake suspending his political campaign, threaten to dis a long scheduled debate, insert himself into a delicate negotiation about which he hasn't even bothered to learn the basics, and come out on top. A reasonably intelligent person wouldn't have risked the world's economy in order to score political points but then we can't call McCain reasonably intelligent because HE'S STUPID ON STILTS!
