AMERICAblog: Washington Post on Cindy McCain's drug addiction

  • CPL · 1 year ago
Wait for it...the charge that dragging up Cindy's drug use is coming from the Obama camp, when the reality is, that issue has been out there for a number of years and long before anyone heard of Barack Obama.

But he will get the blame all the same; just like Bush blamed Clinton for screw ups in his Administration and Clinton hasn't graced the White House in eight years.

Raw Story also has a story -

Whistleblower Breaks 15-Year Silence to Allege McCain Hid Wife's Drug Abuse
    http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Whistleblower_bre...

My favorite quote in the article? -

"I have never been so aware of the amount of insincerity behind a political campaign as I am now with John McCain's reelection campaign," he writes on Sept. 3, 1992. "Everything Cindy McCain does is politically motivated and driven by the almighty 'photo op.' I am convinced that Cindy McCain could give a rat's ass about the citizens of the third world countries or the victims of natural disasters."

    Priceless!
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
"She has said she hid her addiction from her husband, Sen. John McCain, and stopped taking the pain medications in 1992 after her parents confronted her."

That comment makes no sense to me. How would her parents know and not her husband?
He had to have either known and ignored it, or he knew and encouraged it.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
Umm, read the RawStory article linked below... the WaPo's version has made some slightly different claims and has almost completely eliminated or downplayed Johnny Mac's role in the attempted coverup / reduced (eliminated mandatory state drug sentence)...
  • risa87 · 1 year ago
Personally, I hope Obama declares this whole mess off limits in the campaign. Wasn't this about the time McCain was calling his wife a C*** in front of reporters? And you wonder how he could not notice her problems?
  • canuck55 · 1 year ago
The Herald is a local paper in Everett Washington, a northern suburb of Seattle, home of the Boeing assembly plant for the 747's, pretty blue collar in a lot of ways (has it's own junior hockey team, the Silvertips, in the WHL). But Washingtom is a pretty progressive state, although the governor Christine Gregoire is in a tight fight with Republican lickspittle Dino Rossi.

OT, but this is really upsetting:

Two days ago, I posted a question here. I asked if foreclosure could be used to stop a person from voting when they went to the polls. Some people said no, but relocation could.

Well, get this. I'm in Macomb County Michigan. The Michigan Messenger (blog) is reporting that Jim Carabelli, Macomb County Republican chair said republican poll workers will have foreclosure lists to challenge votes in Macomb County. For those of you who don't realize it, Macomb is a key county. Oh yeah, Obama is ahead and there have been thousands of foreclosures in the county.

Saul Anunzis, State Party Chair denies it. Ya think? The Messenger is standing by their story.

This can't be legal. Can anybody get an opinion on this?
  • BobSmith · 1 year ago
I think it is legal if you don't change you place of residence. This is happening a lot across the country.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
Again, HUGE assumption on your part. Read the link above. .

We have to stop doing that....assuming that republicans have OUR best interests in mind. NOT.

devlzadvocate, it seems to me if people move they will change their address for voter registration. Those foreclosed on after the cut off time would be too few to challenge.
Foreclosures are a matter of public record, so it's not illegal, but I am with you, it's sleazy and typical Republican tom foolery,

If republicans are behind an effort to disqualify voters at the voting booth, how would you think that would work out good for Democrats at election time?

    Where is your head?????
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Are you responding to me? Where do you get I think it is good?
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
    no. sorry, misplaced comment.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Got it. Thanks. I reread my post to see what I might have said to offend. lol
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
I'm blogging in three different places. I shouldn't do that. I did find out that it IS LEGAL in all states NOT because you have relocated, but that you simply may not own that property any longer, which really doesn't mean you've moved.

However, with purged voter lists in many states and this, I need valium.
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "IS LEGAL in all states." Do you mean that it is legal to prevent someone from voting using the address of a foreclosed property?

If someone has gone through foreclosure as of today or anytime before the final voter registration date in their state, it would be wisest to change their registration. In Michigan, the statute (Michigan electoin law 168.507a) reads: “(2) A registered and qualified elector of this state who has moved from the city or township in which he or she is registered to another city or township within the state after the sixtieth day before an election or primary election shall be permitted to vote in the election or primary election at the place of last registration upon the signing of a form containing an affidavit stating that the move has taken place. This subsection shall apply if the county in which the elector is registered has not implemented the county file as the official file pursuant to section 509e.” Each state likely has a statute which addresses this issue, so that those people who lose their homes after the final voter registration deadline, would be able to vote. We need to help each other out with this. If we know anyone who is going through the process of foreclosure we should do what we can to help them vote. It may seem like a trivial thing in light of the fact of foreclosure but we need new leadership to ensure that regulation and oversight are restored to their proper place role in Washington so that what is happening now does not happen again.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
the article says that the Repubs are getting their "foreclosure lists" from the law firm that is handling foreclosures for a large mortgage bank. The law firm and the McCain headquarters in that area are located in the same building. The law firm, if it's doing foreclosures for the mortgage company has information on preforeclosures and delinquencies as well... plus this area has the added benefit (for the repubs) of being a primarily black / democratic area.

Check out the article at the Michigan Messenger (www.michiganmessenger.com) that I mentioned in my earlier comment. "Michigan election law 168.507a allows a voter to vote at their last-registered voter address." (The exact wording of the statute is in the article.) I would guess that there are similar laws in most, if not all, of the states, but this is something that poll watchers are definitely going to have to get a handle on. If you have any questions, contact ACORN (www.acorn.org). If they don't know the answer, they will probably know where you can go to find out. Their website has links to their various locations throughout the U.S. They're located in 40 states and D.C. (not in Montana, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Alaska).
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
Go back to the Michigan Messenger (www.michiganmessenger.com). There are two new stories: "Foreclosure may not be a 'proper cause' for challenging voters at polls" and "Republicans recant plans to foreclose voters but admit other strategies." ACORN got involved, which is a good thing, but the "other strategies" are probably something we should be much more concerned about. They will be using caging, as has already been happening in Ohio and Florida. Some pretty nasty push polls are already happening across the country. What is wrong with these people?
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
There is a supreme court decision that says something on the order of "home is where the heart is". You can own and live in two or more houses but use just one for your registration address.
I discussed this with an attorney last year in regard to an elected official who appeared to have moved but was still using his old address as his legal, voting residence.
Attorney said the individual was probably within his rights.
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
Come on, really? "Home is where the heart is"? And what book of statutes would we find that in? You better believe that the Republicans will be scrambling and cheating and conniving for every vote they can get, and they will (as they have in the past) trick and intimidate people into losing their vote. If you have any question at all, or know someone whose ability to vote may be challenged, learn what the laws are in your state, county, municipality, or precinct, and make sure you are armed with those facts when you go to vote. Don't take any folksy maxims for the truth.

Sometimes court decisions contain folksy maxims.

This story has been on the RAW STORY site for at least 24 hours. Matt Stoller from Open Left was in on the interview. It shows that McCain knew and covered up her addiction. It also paints a very unflattering portrait of our potential new First Lady. I don't know but I wouldn't be too quick on this one, the guy Gosinski was fired. He says he has lived in fear from McCain retribution for 15 years, somehow I find that hard to believe.

Anyway we know Cindy was drug addicted, she admits it. What we didn't know is the rest of the story.

FYI: The Everett Herald is a local paper for a city that's about an hour's drive north of Seattle. It's tough to find the paper within Seattle proper, although that's where some of their writers live and the further north you go the more likely you are to see a copy of the Herald lying around.
  • hopelesspedant · 1 year ago
The Everett Herald is owned by the Washington Post Company.

I guess we'll see soon if it runs in the parent paper tomorrow...
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
Not only is there a space for the story in the Washington Post (a blank template), but there are 92 comments posted to it, all wondering where the story is.
  • risa87 · 1 year ago
This story is the life blood of the National Enquirer. There are more important issues be discussed. This is a distraction. Maybe the McCain's themselves were the source for this story. "Look over here, they were mean to Sarah, now they're picking on my wife!"
  • iWoman · 1 year ago
There's a big (lengthwise) story about Cindy McCain in the most recent New Yorker magazine (I got it in the mail today). It discusses the prescription drug scandal, among other things. I guess she goes around saying she's an only child - including at her dad's funeral - when in fact she has two half-sisters (same father). That's classy.

But I don't think she should be dragged into things unless John McCain really did interfere or try to cover something up.

snohomish county is the 2nd closest county to alaska. otherwise i don't get the connection.

and I live there, does that mean I get a piece of the Alaskan oil royalties?

Snohomish is the third closest county, so neither of you get royalties. : P

Cindy McCain is a rich, spoiled, protected woman. Cindy McCain is not running for anything.

From Open Left by Matt Stoller. He questions if McCain interfered with DEA regarding Cindy.

Didn't there used to be (long ago) a Herald Tribune in D.C.? Maybe the Post acquired it.

Again, this is from the Everett (Washington STATE) Herald, which is owned by the Washington Post.

This is yet another double standard that defines this election. Imagine if this had been Michelle Obama, growing up on the South Side of Chicago. She would have done prison time for forgery and theft of drugs. So would just about anyone else. I don't judge Mrs. McCain for her drug problems. She was troubled and needed help and support. But for her to be so arrogant and dump on Mrs. Obama by saying, "I've always been proud of my country," has set her up to be called out on her lack of class. Who does she think she is that she can put herself so above others, while being guilty of a crime that, had she not been a wealthy white woman married to a powerful U.S. Senator would have gone to jail for this. The fact that it's hidden from the public, along with so many other things in the McCain closet, is yet another example of how the bar is set so much higher for the Democrats than the lying Republicans.

The story is now on the WaPo website as part of tomorrow (Friday's) paper.

It is the #3 story (after the Lehman mess and the Palin interview).

    So - major prominence.

    HI All,

Be patient with this comment. I have been sober on and off since 1988. Mostly I've been sober. I've had a few relapses but recovered again. I now have 12 years.

Having said that, I am addicted to percocet and Soma. You can't really be addicted to Soma but I am very conservative in my evaluation.

Anyway, I've had 4 major back surgeries, fusions for those in the know. I have not recovered from the last one and no-one knows what went wrong. They fused me from both sides, front and back. ---- and they destroyed my abs.

I work very hard at recovery both physically and on my sobriety. Addiction due to pain is unavoidable. I am the first to nail republicans for anything i can. I'm not easy on Dems either for that matter. But this is a bull shit story.

Whatever arrangements were made for her to maintain her supply was necessary. Traveling internationally while maintaining your supply is difficult. So people help. This is about pain not fun. She needed them.

Here is the most important part. Even if she was cured physically, the pain would still be there. One of the main side effects of narcotics withdrawal is back pain. And doctors so not understand that.

I had to go thru a one month treatment in a pain clinic to truly understand that narcotics cause back pain.

In the end, I still have to take pain medication. However, I do it in a way that prevents the cycle of pain inducement from the meds. And I am no where near the level of meds that I was on before going into the pain clinic. And it does not go up -- ever. my medication level before treatment was amazing!!!!! You would not believe it.

So on this one folks, I would give here the benefit of the doubt and be grateful that it is not you. I applaud here for getting off the meds!!!

One thing about this that confused me was the passport thing. I kept thinking wow, how could McCain get her a "diplomatic passport" when McCain is not even eligible for one. I thought he must have used some serious connections. However, the answer is much more simple and obvious. Cindy McCain was entitled to an "official" passport and I am sure that is the passport she was using. However, what she was not entitled to do was to use that "official" passport when she was not on official government business. And for the spouse of a Senator, it would basically only be accompanying her husband on a CODEL.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_pass...

So people, lets not get all totally whacked out about this. There is an scandal here, but "procuring a diplomatic passport" is not it. Not by a long shot.

BTW, how many McCain stories has the WaPo dropped on a Friday? It seems like a trend.
