I've always thought that in addition to giving the GOP a really potent wedge issue with the abortion debate, the GOP ultimately isn't in this for fundamentalist Christian reasons. Sure they pander to that base but you hit the nail on the head as to what this really means. The idea that every American has a right to privacy. If the warrantless wiretapping issue doesn't give you a clue as to the Republicans ideas of Americans rights to privacy then the recent story you guys here at AmericaBlog posted about the new Justice Dept guidelines on investigating U.S. citizens should pretty much clue us all in.

What very few people have mentioned re: Palin's selection is that it was also in response to Obama's choice of Biden. Sorry I lost the link, but I think McC got into serious discussions about this possibility w/SP on Sunday, the day after Obama's announcement. Why am I blathering about this?
McCain, Rove, etc. think SP is the best person to kneecap Biden, think he can't use his debating prowess against her w/o overstepping etc... WHEN in fact they've played into one of Biden's great strengths.
The Democratic VP candidate is someone who's created and launched nationwide programs to protect all women who might be threatened, versus the GOP VP candidate, who when worried (dunno how legitimately) on one woman's behalf, addressed the concern by abusing her own position to get one guy fired. Who do I want representing me, as a woman? Who cares about *my* right to life?
And yes... "Vote Palin and you can kiss the Pill goodbye!" might help wake some people up.

John McCain's first executive Decision, Sarah Palin. shows he cares nothing for this Country, is incompetent, and is not ready to lead. With all our economic problems, threats of terrorism, he picks someone with much less executive experience than Barack Obama, who by the way was 10 years in the state senate before being elected to the U.S. Senate (a bio very similar to Lincoln who is considered one of our greatest if not the greatest President we have ever had), and which takes away McCain's most ardent argument to date that Barack is an empty suit! Is this another Alan Keyes moment when GOP put up Mr. Keyes to run against Barack in Illinois just because he was Black?
In her speech on Friday, they already have Gov. Palin "lying" to the American people that she was always against the Bridge to Nowhere, however recorded information will prove that this is not accurate and that she was for the Bridge to Nowhere, before she was against it!

Not only is Palin less experienced and less qualified than Barack, she seems to lack the intellectual curiosity, or unwillingness, and depth to probe and understand the important and complexing problems/issues knocking at our door today. For example, "What is it exactly that the vice president does all day?" Palin offhandedly asked CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow in July. And when asked about her stance on Iraq by Alaskan Daily Palin answers "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments"! Does this show someone who is ready for Prime Time! And, was she truly vetted? Sarah/McCain get ready for she is about to come under the "media" microscope!
McCain’s VP pick also shows a disdain for this country because if something were to unfortunately happen to McCain, Sarah Palin would be our next President of the United States. Can you imagine in her that role? This proves two things in my mind, McCain’s lack of love for this country and that he does not have the judgment to lead this country at this most profound time.
Some in the media call it Historic but in reality Is this decision Historic or Hysterical and a mockery to our political system? Some in the media label it a game changer but is it really a roll of the dice? And should a Presidential candidate play Russian roulette with the people's business? It is telling of McCain's character and judgment that with all the problems we face here today, he did not have the People's interest at heart in this V.P. pick but rather a desire to win for winnings sake and did not think of the consequences of his actions or maybe did not care what it would mean for this country if she were to be sworn in as President of the United States! And, ironically, the very things he accused Barack of being (which he is not) -- empty suit, no experience -- he got in his own V.P. Pick, Sarah Palin!
In McCain's/GOP's calculated ploy to pull Hillary women from Barack without consideration as to whether or not this woman has the ability and experience to lead the United States here and on a world scale shows a lack of sound judgment and it also shows that McCain is NOT READY TO LEAD in the 21st Centruy and is not serious about solving the monumental problems which must be faced -- problems which need serious thinking and not strategic games.

Governor Palin is a Roman Catholic. Roman Catholics are morally bound by Pope Paul VI's anti-articificial birth control papal encyclical "Humanae Vitae" of 1968. If you read this encyclical, Catholics are encouraged to work with their governments to discourage use of artificial birth control. Here is an appeal from Pope Paul VI to public authorities from Humanae Vitae from section 23 of the encyclical: "Do not tolerate any legislation which would introduce into the family those practices (i.e., artificial birth control) which are opposed to the natural law of God." This church teaching asserts that artificial birth control is "contrary to natural law." Palin is anti-abortion and is also against the use of artificial birth control (condoms, birth control pills, etc.). Palin's church tells her as a government leader "not to tolerate" legislation which supports use of artificial birth control. This is RC teaching. Google "Humanae Vitae" and read it yourself. It is unpopular teaching and perhaps ignored by many catholics, but Palin is something of a fundamentalist in terms of religion (even promoting creationism being taught in schools when Catholics, since the papacy of Pope Pius XII, have been taught that evolution is not contrary to Church teaching). Palin would make a female teen who was a victim of rape or incest have a baby. Palin will, no doubt, go after Griswold v CT. Republicans talk about personal freedom and liberty, but they want to take it away many reproductive choices from women. I hope she gets asked these religious and philosophical questions about Church, State, and privacy issues during interviews and debates. It is also odd that evangelicals who want women to stay in "traditional roles" as mothers would advocate a mother of five being vice president and possibly president. The RC Church refuses to promote condom use for HIV prevention. These are facts, not emotional or partisan rants.

Don't let her fool you. I don't know of a catholic woman that doesn't use birth control. They can say all they want. I was raised catholic and still am and I used birth control. The pope can't take care of my family. The republicans are always saying take care of yourself. Well screw the pope and I hope all women open their eyes wheter they are dem or rep. Abortion is one thing but birth control is something else. I think alot of people will support birth control.

She may have those same beliefs, and have been baptized Roman Catholic, but according to her interview in Time recently http://tinyurl.com/58bxlh she claims to have been raised in non-denominational Christian churches, and now attend them. That would indicate that she is not Roman Catholic and has not received Roman Catholic sacraments or religious education.

I have know this for a long time. As a catholic the pope push no birth control. I don't know any catholic women that aren't on birth control. F k the pope. I was up and tuned to the catholic channel one night early in the morning (couldn't sleep). This couple was on and she was talking about having had an abortion. The conversation went on and on. Than they started talking birth control. My ears perked up. They wanted to outlaw birth control. I wonder how many women are going to stand for that. I bet hell will break loose.
