AMERICAblog: 'We misread how bad the economy was'

  • HelenRainier · 4 months ago
It didn't occur to Obama that selecting some of the same people to "fix" the problems who helped cause it wasn't a very smart idea?
  • Truckloadbear · 4 months ago
I seem to recall Krugman screaming his head off that the original stimulus wasnt nearly large enough..
  • An_American_Karol · 4 months ago
It's a good thing I read through the comments before posting my comment. I was going to point out the same thing.
Who would have thought...Krugman, cough, Krugman.
  • AdmNaismith · 4 months ago
OK. The honeymoon is waaay f*ckin' over. Obama needs to fix something, anything, and fast.

The gay-stuff is easy from the Executive Branchs' perspective (but icky, I guess).
The Economic stuff requires some real butt-kicking (Wall-Street, The Treasury, Congress, Health Ins Co's- you name it it needs it's butt kicked) but Obama seems incapable of that.

Obama's got to do something concrete- speachifying-time is over.
  • gloughlin42 · 4 months ago
Obama's primary intention was to bail out the elites and the bankers and that's exactly what he did. And if necessary, rest assured he would do the same thing again without blinking an eye. Keep in mind, Obama is bought and paid for by banks such as Goldman Sachs - it is them who he answers to NOT the American people. Obama and his minions are total FRAUDS/LIARS! Be prepared because things are going to get much, much worse.
  • Dateline_Molly · 4 months ago
They don't even have to put on the charade of pretending to be competent. They can just come out and say they are clueless, and they know there are no consequences no matter what they say.

Heads should be rolling and Obama should be firing his economic thugs. Of course that won't happen.

Storming the White House is the only thing that would work at this point. :(
  • JeepTreats · 4 months ago
Storming the white house is an excellent idea, at least a week of protesting.

Obama is complicit in this. Biden already declared he still wants to run for president. Who knows what motivated him to say this. Then again he does have that foot in mouth disease.
  • osage · 4 months ago
Biden shouldn't be trying to make excuses after eight years of excuses that turned out to be lies from the Bush administration. It's one thing for a leader to admit a mistake; it's another thing entirely for him to admit to misjudging the depth and seriousness our nation's financial problems, no mater who is to blame for creating them. A couple million taxpayer dollars might qualify as a "misreading", but hundreds of billions or trillions of taxpayer dollars is a catastrophic blunder of titanic proportions!
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
I've got news for them, everything is worse beyond what they fucking realize.

Exactly what do they thing all the noise about civil rights, war crimes, and the economy was all about?

Fire Geitner. Bring in a whole new team of people who didn't work at Goldman.

At least with Hillary we would have had Bill. Here I go again reminding you how nasty you were about her. At least we would have had BILL.
  • JeepTreats · 4 months ago
astroflex, Bill Clinton and the Republicans got us in this mess when they repealed Glass-Steagall.

So I wouldn't depend on ole Bill to fix what he started.

    Clinton, Republicans agree to deregulation:

At the time her staff was even nastier than obamas, she refused to talk to the blogs, and she canceled an interview with Joe and me when her staff found out we were going to ask her about doma. I think you need to get over the primary. We hold them in democracies.
  • jeniferea · 4 months ago
The fact is a LOT of the liberal blogs were whole hog for Obama and helped to elect this man. There were many, many signs and overt statements that indicated Obama would govern exactly as he is doing.

And please refresh my memory, did Obama give you and Joe an interview about DOMA?

I'd happily be over the primaries, but the fact is that many dems did not hold their negotiating positions at ALL and we now have a President and Congress who think they ARE the party and can ignore and bully us. They've done it successfully before and are going to try, try again.
  • astroflex · 4 months ago
Thank you very much jeniferea, right on. Every time I bring this up, I get bashed by John. I can't seem to get my point across to John. Sometimes we have to admit we were wrong and move on. I supported Hillary, then voted for Obama, and I think that he has let a lot of people down.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
Are you implying that we would have been better with Billary again?

    Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

They got us into this mess. They got us into DOMA. They got us into DADT. They fucked up health care. They got us into and economic mess with the repeal of Glass-Steagall, not to mention NAFTA, CAFTA, etc.

The Hillarybots are smoking crack if they think that she would have done any better. She couldn't even run a viable campaign. Her campaign was a clusterfuck from day one. The blogs didn't beat Hillary -- Billary beat Hillar.
  • astroflex · 4 months ago
Sorry, Joe Sudby and John Aravosis were meaner about Hillary. Okay, okay, I need to get over it. ;-)
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 4 months ago
    What Joe SHOULD have said:

The ripple effects of the last two years of Bush's economy have been more serious and negative than we anticipated.

"There ya go again, Joe" (wink).
  • woodka · 4 months ago
Well, I don't think Obama had the time to sit around reading the economics blogs like a lot of us have. ;^) I think he needs to have a nice dinner with Krugman (again), Roubini, Ritholz, Calculated Risk, and Mark Thoma. ;^) Hack, maybe even throw Mish in there for good measure...
  • devlzadvocate · 4 months ago
"We misread how bad the economy was"

The only confidence I get from that statement that we are better off with Obama than Bush is that somebody in the Obama Administration can read. Not well, but they can read.
  • Diogenes · 4 months ago
    Of course they misread it.

The Congress and Senate are not living in the real economy. It's that simple.
  • TheOriginalLiz · 4 months ago
They've shown they can inspire (during the campaign); now let's see if they can deliver. Time to stop talkin' and start walkin'.
  • Don Epstein · 4 months ago
It is very concerning --does the Administration understand that Wall St ultimately is just concerned with themselves..that what is good for Wall St isn't necessarily good for Main Street. When unemployment hits 10% and the impact of California issuing IOU's with no end in site, ( and from the LA Times this morning Gov Arnold is now thinking about a reality show about the budget crisis), Wall St will tumble and we will be back at square one and this time Obama's support to fix it will be much weaker, and here comes the GOP back big time in the midterm elections. Depressing!!!
  • NotTimothyGeithner · 4 months ago
Its the same sort of thought processes that claimed Iraqis would greet us as liberators. They picked the plan that required the least investment and promised the universe. In short, they are idiots.
  • dmf · 4 months ago
you're basing everything on a JOE BIDEN quote?

    k.
  • solsona · 4 months ago
    I'm with you.
  • JeepTreats · 4 months ago
Obama didn't misread anything. If he did he's an idiot. Don't buy it. Who in their right mind didn't know the unemployment rate would go up? Maybe this fake clueless worked for Bush, but too many republicans want to see Obama fail to let him get away with this.

    No second Stimulus.

Fix Wall Street de-regulation, Foreclosures and Health Care.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
I'm with you 100%. I would rather have real, critical, and sweeping reform of all corporate policy. Not just the financial industry. Then I will get my paycheck later and it will be bigger.
  • Indigo · 4 months ago
They also misread how the gay community feels about being second class citizens.
  • Vince in Cedar Rapids · 4 months ago
Indigo, you took the words right out of my mouth!
  • Micheline · 4 months ago
Calm down. If a second stimulus is needed then a second stimulus is needed. No need for rehashing the past. It just needs to be done.
  • Asterix · 4 months ago
Patriotism used to be the last refuge of a scoundrel; now it seems that it's stupidity. They didn't know how bad the problem was? B*LLSH*T! All they had to do was ask someone who did know, say Nouriel Roubini...but then, who pays any attention to Nobel laureates when you have a bunch of banksters with money to change your mind?
  • alexa · 4 months ago
    Idiots! All of them!
  • usair66 · 4 months ago
    John...

You OBVIOUSLY don't know much about how gov't/congress/D.C works!??
Do you think that the Admin. would have been able to get "Krugman-like" regulations through congress?
Do you think that the stimulus would have really been able to get much higher and PASS the Senate?????
We barely made it through with $800 billion!!!

I understand that you and even myself are at times disappointed in what comes out but politics is all about the POSSIBLE and Obama is mostly doing what he can to navigate that reality!
    Think about it.
  • JeepTreats · 4 months ago
Bush got almost anything he wanted from a democratic congress. Obama had political capital. he still has some, he shouldn't waste it.
  • usair66 · 4 months ago
    JeepTreats....

I don't believe Obama has wasted any substantial capital. 60+% approval still!
So far..we got the largest domestic recovery program(in dollar terms) in US history, he has deftly moved financial regulatory legislation, and housing assistance.
New credit card protections and cajoled the House to pass the most sweeping environmental policy ever.
There have been a raft of bills signed over the past 5 and half months.
This fall....Obama ( working with congress) is bringing complete health care reform ...something never accomplished.

He is doing these things early by attempting to collaborate with the opposition. Something the country said it wanted in November...." a new tone" in DC...remember?
He is waiting to pull out the baseball bats for when it becomes necessary.

My message...trust this man. He knows what he is doing.
I am just tired of Dems always eating our young. This is why R's WIN....they fall in line.
That may not be good in our minds...but it gets results!
    Cheers!
  • JeepTreats · 4 months ago
I thought his approval ratings went down to the 50's? It depends on which poll you're reading pal, they're not all the same.
  • JeepTreats · 4 months ago
As for dems eating their own, I'm tired of a Democrat who doesn't apologize when his official or his bigoted reverend friend compares my people to pedophiles.
  • Blue Nine · 4 months ago
Look at the bright side: Only a few months, and Biden is willing to admit they might make a mistake.

Contrast that with the Bush administration which lied about Iraq the whole time.

    Corporate Bailouts
Yea, bad idea Reagan tried similar plan called trickle down economy more like he created a hoover dam holding a river of wealth. The rich and powerfull will never relinquish there power or money. Yea sure, they will give the masses a little money likea bread trail whatever is left over to maintain there lavish lifestyle. The money they did get they used to further distance themselves from the damage they have caused all of the hard working americans. Wealth must be equally distrubuted in a more affective way to empower the people to change there lives. I myself have for several years have endorsed the entrepneural path to freedom and prosperity. This is an expression of self-reliance. We can no longer afford to give our hard earned money to companies and business that do not give back to people. We must stop patrionizing business that no longer empower the people. To conserve resources, waist little think long and hard about who and what we do business with. It's time to get our house in order, it's time to get our nation in order. History is repeating itself this time it's just takin another name that of corporate bailouts in a scham to rob Americans even more money. It's the rich and powerfull taking advantage of the people, this time they changed the laws and allied with special interest to take us all and we let them. This can not stand, we all must take more involvement in what our government is doing and hold those accountable with appropriate penalties and justice of the laws.
