the dems did not even try to win this senate seat. they let it go and they should be ashamed. this could have been a winner if they put more money and time and someone showed up to help. this is another example of the weakness of the dems in the senate and congress. this is another disgrace.

Ah, but the Aryan Idiot has sealed her reputation as a "closer."

I'm sure Obama is going to be able to win over more moderate Rethugs who live in states greatly affected by Rethug policies over the years.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Nearly swallowed my tongue hearing NYC's prissy little jillionaire mayor say "The law's the law" regarding Plaxico Burress.
Poor Plaxico...if only he'd had some high risk paper explode in his pants.
Yikes, the GE clown car riders over at Mourning Joe are unified in extolling the antiseptically unemotional dangers of Detroit's "legacy issues"...It sounds so much nicer than screwing the unions.

Rightwing nut Gov Mark Sanford of SC on CSPAN this morning, railing against Obama's spending plans for infrastructure. Even though SC's unemployment rate is already 8% (officially) and SC receives more fed funds than it sends tax revenues to the fed, and even though the hugest deficits happened under his party's watch, this dinosaurus Rethug thinks more spending on what actual taxpayers and the unemployed need is evil. The only 2 parts of SC that actually make any money are the coastal areas with tourism, and the Greenville-Spartanburg area (fundieland) which have snagged former textile workers with BMW and chemical plants. The rest of the state is eating dirt...oh, and did I mention SC is down around the bottom of the educational scale?
  • SCLiberal · 1 year ago
If I remember right Time Magazine listed Sanford as the 3rd worst governor in the nation. That's probably why South Carolinians voted him back in. The ignorance and fear down here continue to amaze me. I want to move to Vermont!
  • truebluecoondog · 1 year ago
As a resident of the Greenville/Spartanburg area for 20 years now, I agree with you both. It seems like the fundie voters here think that things are going bad because of Dems - so they vote Repub. When things are going well, they think it's because of Repubs - so them vote Repub.

    Idiots.

Just got back from a Turkey weekend in Myrtle Beach-----I almost expected tumbleweed to roll across some of those attractions and dining places. I asked a retail worker in an outlet mall what this looked like in comparison to past years, and he stated without hesitation that it was the worst he remembered. Anas for Greenville, a the BMW offices in the world can't help them,----I drove through there and saw at least three half finished office towers that hadn't seen any activity for a while.................Sanford can choke on his own halfassed rhetoric.

Has anyone else noticed that the news is carrying stories of Obama as if he is already in the White House? Any news story about Bush seems to be a sidenote these days.

Heard this economist on NPR this morning and wanted to cheer:
But Wall Street is in not, in fact, the heart of the economy. The implosion of financial markets, and the gut-wrenching drop in stock values creates an illusion of total economic crisis for folks watching from the couch at home. But far from lower Manhattan, the real engine of the American economy continues to chug along.

According to University of Chicago economist Casey Mulligan, the performance of the non-financial economy -- the part that actually makes the stuff that improves our standards of living over time -- is strikingly independent of the performance of financial markets.

What matters most for prosperity is the effectiveness of the non-financial sector in delivering bang for each buck of capital that goes into it. Mulligan says that the crucial "marginal productivity of capital" over 2007 and the first half of this year was higher than the average since World War II.

Rising unemployment would seem to contradict that, though. And the effect of unemployment has great consequences for local businesses as well who also depend on those employees for their own survival. And if credit has been cut off for those businesses and individuals to create demand for those products, that's not good news either. Stay tuned.
  • SCLiberal · 1 year ago
I like the last paragraph of his interview:

We're going to get out of this downturn, but that will happen sooner if the government stops trying to prop up already failed financial giants. We'll best ensure continued investment in our still-vital economy if we let new financial players rise from Wall Street's ruins.

Yes, stay tuned. I think we will see a lot of new players in the future economy.

    Good morning, Joe.

I cannot friggin' believe that Chambliss won. Please don't tell me that Palin had something to do with that.

Btw, I've got a thing or two to add about Hillary's nomination for Secretary of State, even though it may come off as looking like Hillary Derangement Syndrome.

Still whining about HRC? Apparently Obama did not get your memo.
  • jurassicpork · 1 year ago
Oh, sorry, FB. I forgot my place. For a moment there, I was daydreaming that we still had the first amendment and informed dissent.

I also forgot that we can love Hillary again now that she and Obama have "kissed and made up."

I really don't care, it just bothers you so. It amazes me that someone can
dislike someone so passionately that they see nothing else.

The same could be said for your blind adoration of Obama and everything he does to the point that you see nothing else.

Has it ever occured to you that perhaps one can hate Hillary or anyone else for several damned good reasons? Or are you that desperate to settle for anyone whose names aren't Bush and Rice?

I don't believe Sarah is Trig's mom either.....if she were what would be so difficult about releasing birth records.
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
No "releasing" necessary. Hospital has no record of even ONE baby being born on April 18th. Date of admission/birth is not confidential information and can be released to anyone who inquires.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
Being a teenager back in the 50s (the era Rethugs seem to be stuck in), it occurred to me that you won't find any record of Trig's birth in AK. Back in the old days, young unmarried girls and women of the middle class were shuttled off to their "aunt's" or other relative to give birth and usually adopted the baby out. Poor girls just stuck it out at home, along with the "whore" label.

So, since Bristol was out of school for a period of time, it's not so far-fetched to think that she gave birth in another state (or even Canada) at a relative's and he was smuggled back in under the guise of being the Aryan Idiot's. How simple!

    Good morning....
    yep, cold in MN too..

    from Sullivan this morning:

    Final Turnout Numbers
With a little more than 61 percent of eligible voters casting ballots, the 2008 results also didn’t match the record 63.8 percent turnout rate that helped propel President John F. Kennedy to victory in 1960.

And the now-established consensus is that Obama did very well in getting out his vote; but his 7 point margin of victory was largely accomplished by former Republican voters staying home. More evidence of Rove's historic achievement: the destruction of the Republican brand.

    http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily...

Maybe Rove isn't so bad after all....if he destroyed the GOP
  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
There's lies, damn lies and then there's statistics. I think Barack's greatest achievement was not so much in the numbers but in the zeal and dedication of those that volunteered for him. People of all ages, most had never volunteered in any election, gave unselfishly of themselves. I also think the statistics are easily interpreted a thousand ways. Their are millions more eligible voters this time. In 1960 people under 21 could not vote. While the percentages may be different the actual numbers are amazing. Maybe comparing now to then is apples and oranges.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Good morning! Martinez will not run for the senate in 2010. The pressure is on him from the Republicans to resign his seat early so they can appoint a Republican successor to him. That's not likely to happen. The odds are even today that his replacement will be a Democrat. Florida slowly fades to blue. Slowly.

So, does Franken still have a chance of winning in MN? I sure hope so. GEORGIA, WTF?
  • grandma · 1 year ago
We won't know for sure til Dec 16th
  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
Chambliss winning in GA is no real surprise. It was an out side chance the dem would take it. Voting was probably scewed by people voting only for president.
  • hallam · 1 year ago
To go from 51 seats to 60 in one go was never particularly realistic. Looks like there is still a good chance Franken might take out Coleman for a net gain of 8 seats.

The next cycle is pretty good for Democrats as well, there are several vulnerable Republicans and no particular Democratic liabilities.

So the Republicans have a real problem. If they filibuster popular legislation they risk losing more seats in 2010. And they are going to be leaderless, worse than leaderless in fact as the Press is amusing itself by presenting Palin as their leader.

At the end of the day, 58 seats and the White House is enough to run out any filibuster. And the Democrats will simply threaten to do what the Republicans threatened to do, roll everything into one enormous bill and sit out the filibuster.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
Maybe Gregory isn't such a bad choice for Meet the Press after-all....it'll save me having to switch channels every nite when he comes on......I'd like to see David Schuster fill Gregory's nightly time slot.

  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
So we give the banks billions, they use it to buy other banks, all done to save the economy. Now they begin to destroy the economy by laying off hundreds of thousands of PEOPLE (it is not jobs it is people) All the while they continue to pay out billions in bonuses to their fat cat execs. Makes perfect sense to me.

    How cool is this:

HONOLULU – Hawaii has unveiled plans to be first in the nation to roll out electric car stations statewide — a move the governor hailed as a major step toward weaning the islands off oil.

Hawaii imports foreign oil for almost 90 percent of its energy needs. One-third of that oil is used to power cars and buses on island streets.

Gov. Linda Lingle said Tuesday the program would help Hawaii meet its goal of slashing fossil fuel use 70 percent by 2030.
  • cosanostradamus · 1 year ago
    .
I suspect another boondoggle. Lingle is no friend of the aina. And most people here prefer big, gas-guzzling trucks, SUVs & vans for their over-size (weight & numbers) families, even with $4.65 gas. They pay more than list for regular cars here, so those electric cars are going to have to be REALLY cheap to be affordable here, where the average income is $20-30k. As long as they're custom-made, and not mass-market, they won't be cheap. And the electricity will still come from oil.

Island-wide mass transit and intelligent urban/ suburban planning would be a better investment, but no Republican will ever push that. And Lingle is a real Republican: She took off three weeks to campaign for McCain's hopeless effort, bad-mouthing home-town favorite Obama. She acted surprised when local people blasted her for that on her return, like we don't get Mainland news here. Then she refused to take three days off over the holidays to attend Obama's Governors' summit in Philly this week, passing up a chance to mend fences and advance this depressed State's interests.

In short, if Lingle is for it, it's prob'ly bogus. She opposes mass transit, and has a history of dumping raw untreated sewage in the ocean, the basis of our local economy. Even the Bush EPA had to sue her. She's an *sshole.

It's going to be very interesting to see how often the Senate Republicans use the filibuster to obstruct the Obama agenda.

How many times did they use the filibuster to obstruct the Democratic majority in the last two years? I mean how many times they actually filibustered, rather than Reid caving in to a threat.

The Dems don't need a filibuster-proof majority, they just need to stop being spineless. Let the Republicans filibuster so everyone can watch them trying to kill good legislation that most Americans want.

Hey Chambliss voters; are you stuck on stupid, or what? You must LIKE the way things are going. We elected a president to jump start this nation, put an end to abuse, corruption, and excessive lobbying. Then you idiots out there refuse to give the congress the power to carry out that mission. I know there are others besides Chambliss but, for Pete's sake, this guy discredited and unseated a disabled vet. Enjoy your grits, Georgia, we might all be living on them soon. Morons.

Saxby Chambliss just got the easiest job in the Senate. He will be the new Senator No. Jesse Helms reincarnated and ready to bring things to a halt at any sign of progress with an adoring fan base back home urging him to drag his heels in the name of g*d and country.

His Southern Fried pleasure at being the designated Repuke firewall will be hard to watch.

I still don't understand how the threat of filibustering has become the defacto be all-end all regarding Senate procedure. What ever happened to actually making someone get up and hold the floor? Whatever happened to having to read the phone book or the Constitution or something to actually filibuster legislation. It's like 59 is no better than 49 or 39 or 29 if one person is going to stand up time after time and wave the filibuster placard and then sit down while the country sinks. WTF???

Our Senate leadership sucks. No imagination. No spine. No desire. No direction. No clue as to how to accomplish anything without having a 60 seat majority. As if all 60 are going to vote party line anyway. Remember HoJo? 60 wasn't going to be 60 anyway with that smarmy weasel warming a seat.
  • RIPWAMU · 1 year ago
It goes without saying that the Dems needed to put some big names out there before this runoff and they didn't. The hype is over, the country is deeper in crap, it was cold, and they just weren't interested in heading back out to the polls. The Dem higher ups really let us down on this one.

I think Biden needs to sit down with the majority leaders and let them know spinelessness is not going to be allowed in this Senate. If they wish to be that, then their names will be advertised and and can guarantee themselves a lose in 2010. We can't afford to lose these seats. We also need to be on top of our congress folks and let them know what we want and let them know when we don't like what they've done. We are larger in numbers than any lobbyists and we need to take back this country.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
When wil the majority of Georgia voters be able to think clearly? It would seem that they have learned very little from the past 8 years of Republican disasters. It is sad that the likes of Saxby and Sarah would influence the voters in Georgia.
  • curt · 1 year ago
Hey Olympia - if Franken wins his recount, how about pulling a Jeffords and switch to the Democrats? That way you can win your next election by giving the new dominant political party the 60th seat it needs to pass the policies the American people demand without the threat of a filibuster by the long time to come minority Republican party !

I found some interesting websites about Sundance, and thought I would let you know, since you seem to have lit a fire about it being held in the hate capital - Utah.

    1. Sundance needs money
    (http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/288611/18/)
Apparently corporate sponsors are not coming through. Could we pressure the remaining sponsors ( Hewlett-Packard, Entertainment Weekly, Volkswagen, American Express, Delta Airlines, Sony, Rayban, L'Oreal, Stella Artoisto) pull their support unless Sundance moves?

    2. Could we move Sundance to New Mexico - like maybe Taos
    (http://movesundance.com/
New Mexico is the one non-hate state in the Rockies, and wouldn't it be nice to support Equality New Mexico as they push for domestic partnership rights in the state legislature (they are close and deserve our support)
