US auto companies screwed up in the 70s, producing steam ships when everybody was worried about the price of gas, and the japanese companies ate their lunch.
Same thing happened again. They have no business being in business.
If you want to maintain a domestic automobile industry, offer some incentives for some progressive automotive companies to expand operations in the US or offer guaranteed loans for startups.

Of course, Michigan's a battle ground state, so they'll get their money, whether or not they deserve it.

This is not news for some of us. The Fords are the same idiots who have been in control of the Detroit Lions football team for the past 4 decades of ineptitude and failure. (yes, I'm a bitter fan).

When does the hybrid version of this model come out?
Are you ready yet for the November 4th Elections? How about your friends, family, and neighbors? More Americans are expected to vote this year than ever before in history, so don’t be left out! Be sure to ask everyone you know the following questions: • Are you registered to vote? If you moved recently, have you updated your voter registration? • Did you apply for an Absentee Ballot? Do you know your state may not require any reason? • Can you find your local Polling Place? Do you know it may have changed from last time? The answers to these questions -- and all your voting needs -- can be found at www.StateDemocracy.org

Oh, stop! FreddieMac, FannieMay, Lehman Bros, WaMU, Merrill Lynch, Bear Sterns - that's all ok; but putting some money into manufacturing and saving good paying jobs is a huge no-no? War profiteering coming out your ears, but screeeetch - don't bail out autos so they can retool plants and build cars in the US. Piss on the people who depend on them for jobs. Auto Execs. are too blame, and so are the "green" people who left them stuck with all the small cars they couldn't sell the last time people decided they wanted higher mileage cars. Yeah, you remember. The peanut guy, Carter. I love blogs, but sometimes the drama, sloganeering, sneering, and over simplified party line makes a mockery of blogging and progressives. You don't have a clue as to what is going on in Michigan or the auto industry. With your logic, we should quit bailing out hurricane and flood victims. Afterall, if they are too stupid to change (move), why should we yadda, yadda, yadda.

The congressional twitheads with Ford or Ford suppliers in their districts will never let failure happen. Please open your wallet. And remember, it is "economies of scale" behind mergers and consolidations. And ooh! Maybe it makes us politically powerful too! From retail, food, farms et al. "Too big to fail" is everywhere. Deeply entrenched in our economy. Where are our true enemies now?

I'm a conservative and my conservative buddies and I are disgusted by the continued bailouts of these big corporations, and i hope that the auto bailout doesn't pass. I'm also pleased to see that conseravtives and liberals can agree on SOMETHING!. This auto bailout should not pass!
