"If enough folks hate this, we can switch back to regular "flat" comments "
I think once people get used to it, they'll prefer the indents. I know I do. That way if someone want's to make every thread all Hillary/Obama all the time, they can have their own discussion going and everyone else can respond to what the original post is supposed to be really about before the gist of the thread is lost completely.

For some reason, it works better in Firefox. IE keeps changing things on me and generating scripting error messages.

i liked the other system but i can see that you can identify the troubled people that make the troubling comments. well back to politics-did anyone see the juancole.com article on why bush and cheney are going to attack iran soon. the article is very, very good . i recommend it to all who do not want a third war opening up in the very near future. thanks

Somehow I have the feeling that this new system is anti-Hillary?
theWalrus

I thought the same thing, too. Although a rating system can be helpful when it comes to music I think it will be too easy to be abused on a political blog.
theWalrus
So far, I'm not impressed. It slows the whole site down. After one posts a comment there's a lot of jumping around the screen as it posts. The threading makes it really difficult to see new comments (you have to scroll up and down looking) Having a flat system allows you to easily read the flow as it progresses. There's no auto-refresh. I'd rather not have my comments aggregated at Disqus.

Under Options, you can set the sort order.
theWalrus

Yes, I see that. I don't see how that helps. I just posted a reply ro someone else's post and it ended up nested halfway down the screen (just like this one will be...) and I had to hunt for it to see it.

In other news, Iraq contractor KBR is under investigation for accidentally electrocuting US troops in Iraq. Everything these no-bid contractor crooks built in Iraq is uninhabitable because nothing was built to code. They hired unskilled third world labor. US troops got killed because KBR didn't build their barracks to code.

So now everyone can rate everyone else's comment, oh good, that promotes free speech. I'm sure people wont be a little more intimidated to say what they feel knowing that they could loose the popularity contest.
No, I think it's a great idea to weed out the crazies and stupid people we don't agree with, send them to the bottom, show them how little we regard there input.
Good Job John, AmericaBlog, because America needs another filtered communication system.
nicho
Rating someone's comment has absolutely nothing to do with free speech -- any more than your commenting on John's statement ruined his freedom of speech.
BTW -- have you ever seen an unfiltered communication system? It is chaotic and totally useless. Just think of the phone book if they didn't put the names in alphabetical order -- just printed them according to the date the order for service came in.

Yeah, I think IE has a problem with this (though some Firefox users are not seeing the link as well). I just added some code to at least show the comments link, though it won't show you the number of live comments. I think that should solve the missing-link problem, as it were.

Just wait and see the sparks fly later tonight when a bunch of regulars find out that their names have been stolen by Hillbots. I'm also only rating one commenter. A minus each time I see the name. Not that I don't like the guy. I do. It's just that comment rating is too Orwellian for me. Guess which commenter? :)

I can log in through Netscape, but the log in screen still won't come up when you click "log in" through Internet Explorer. There, even after you've signed up for Disqus, it just re-routes you back to the same article, but you're still not logged in (at least it does on my computer). On Netscape, it works fine, though. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Several people are using their previous usernames. Why won't the system let me use mine? It tells me that name is already taken. Don't think so. Is there anyone out there who can help me?
Human

No. It's a big weakness in changing. Most likely the name was taken by another who is not an Americablog commenter. If they are , they will save it for a proper time to hit you with it. It's not called War Blogging for nothing. I've already armed myself ;) What was your name? Peace.

Most likely - I don't comment very often, but I don't think I was Jackie2 here - I can't remember who I was here prior - Maybe Jackie? I do know I'm Jackie2 @ The Moderate Voice. They must use same system. Heh, I don't comment there very often either. I'm mostly a lurker. I love reading comments, but very rarely do I feel compelled to comment as many others already voice my opinion/thoughts and I can read all the inflammatory responses to them without getting caught in the fray ;-)

I like the new system. Can't say I'm crazy about having to sign up for a new service...but if this gets the job done and reduces your headaches, it's fine.
I do like the threaded feature, by the way. Flat comments are almost impossible to read or make sense of, once the total posts go beyond 10 or 20.

tried to use this on 3 different computers and found that this new system only will let me log in on one of them. One one the login screen is misformatted and on another it just brings me back to the login again. Keep in mind that this is only a beta build, not final.
see?
