  • ndtovent · 10 months ago
why is he raping the senate for all these appts anyway? Leave the senate ALONE already.. Geez.. LIke no one else is qualified for these positions? If he'd stipulated that to me, I'd of told him to F**c off. ROT in the senate.
  • timncguy · 10 months ago
if you think forward to 2010 it may make more sense. The woman who is to be appointed to take his place in the senate is being said to be a "place holder" who will not seek re-election. So, when the seat comes up in 2010 a dem nominee will not have to go up against an incumbent senator. Should make it easier for a dem to take the seat in 2010.
  • ndtovent · 10 months ago
You're right, I didn't think of that. I still don't like this 'deal' thing.
  • Jenny · 10 months ago
Isn't this what we just went through with Blagojevich? No Deals!

I feel uneasy about this selection. Something doesn't seem right about it.

    What exactly are Gregg's qualifications?
  • Mighty · 10 months ago
I have a hard time seeing the republicans not doing everything short of kidnapping to keep this from happening. I am perplexed.
  • Gary · 10 months ago
Biotch-you are given a cabinet position and you think you hold the crown-NEXT.
  • ponchopardise · 10 months ago
Maybe we have to be more proactive in
showing the Republicans just how warm
and cuddly we can be. Perhaps the
Gov. can appoint Joe the FRICKEN
    Plumber. That'll show'em.
But if were really going to be nice maybe
we should just let Rush Limbaugh select
the next couple of Supreme Court Judges
and then just maybe they'll see how very serious
we are about being friendly with each other.

As a resident of New Hampshire, I am extremely disappointed in this selection.

Judd Gregg is no moderate. Wall Sreet's interests and not the interests of average Americans will be represented by Gregg in the Obama administration. Gregg is anti-labor and clueless about the economic realities of average working people. He has led a privileged life and got where he is largely because of his father, a former Governor in NH.

As to any increase in opportunity for a NH Democratic pickup in 2010, I really don't care that much. I was hoping Obama would change the culture this year in DC, and with this pick, he clearly is not.

Again, it's very disappointing. I fully expected to be disappointed by Obama at times, but this one is huge, and it greatly undermines any credibility the Obama administration will have with me in financial matters. Expect more bailouts resulting in corporate executive bonuses.

It's not the change we need; it's more of the same....very depressing.

somewhat fits in line however with summers, rubin, and company. I'm still hoping somewhow obama will tell them what to do from a progressive pov (which obama is not) instead of what they are used to. thanks for the info..

What kind of Democratic governor would make such a lame deal??
  • Forty2 · 10 months ago
Is there no other person qualified to run Commerce than the GOP Senator from New Hamshah? No one?

I'm tiring of all these examples of change I can't believe in.

I'm sure that F**kin REPUKE will continue to do a bang up job.

Maybe he can tell GM what NOT to do with the "stimulus package"?

Folks, If you have not figured it out yet, the corporatist don't give a shit about you. The world financial system is bankrupt, and the US and Obama have been punked. It's in a free fall and dumping more dollars towards the banks is NOT going to work.

And so I continue to ask the question, at what point will it take to get a million pissed off unemployed people to march on to DC and demand redress from the Oligarchy???????????

Gregg won't be making the policy decisions. It may be that Obama sees him as potential help in getting Republicans onboard for future actions by the administration. My guess is that Gregg's Republican replacement, although still a Republican, will be a more moderate. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I really don't think Obama just fell off the turnip truck.
  • ImpureScience · 10 months ago
I don't like this and I don't see why Obama feels the need to deal. On the other hand, every time I've said that Obama is messing up I've been wrong.
  • example · 10 months ago
I guess this is a plan to guarantee at least one republican vote for the stimulus plan. Of course the governor could just say fuck it and nominate a democrat, but that's pretty unlikely to happen.
  • chesterpa · 10 months ago
We can have 3 Republicans because we have people of color, women and gays and lesbians represented in the cabinet...oops, no we don't.
  • r · 10 months ago
i sure as hell hope so. i'm beginning to think he's pandering to repubs (and for what? they will never cooperate w/ dems. i believe most "want him--not is policies--to fail")
  • bob_h · 10 months ago
I guess Howard Dean turned him down? Gregg seems to me to be a generic, intellectually dishonest Republican, and I really don't see what has been accomplished here.
  • moseao · 10 months ago
I don't really like this short term but it's a way to potentially get an entrenched republican out of the senate. The senate is where most of the obstructions for Obama's future legislation are likely to come from. With the senate balance so close to being filibuster-proof, this actually might pay off after the midterms.

What's more is that as we already know, republicans don't really do economics. Mr. Gregg is going to fuck up, and when he does, the most strict ethical guidelines in federal history are going to catch him. If you follow this further out than the next couple of years (which are going to suck no matter what is done let's face it), this is actually a pretty shrewd move.
  • Anthony Look · 10 months ago
Enough with the nice. Dictating to the New Hampshire Governor who is a Democrat to select a Republican is the most foolish thing to date from this administration. New Hampshire voters and their governor should do what is best for their state not federal political parties or sitting presidents. This should not be allowed this to continue.
  • Gorgonzola · 10 months ago
If a Democratic Governor appoints a REpubli-fascist Senator than we know for sure that we have to start from scratch with a new progressive party.
  • YoJen · 10 months ago
For years, the Repubs kicked Dems in the teeth. Grover Norquist compared bi-partisanship to date rape (no kidding). And now, we're even *willing* to consider playing ball with this? That nominating a Repub to replace Gregg is still being discussed and is on the table is quite irritating. I hope that there is a plan that doesn't involve capitulation.
  • moseao · 10 months ago
I don't think this plan involves capitulation at all. Actually, I think this is a very smart strategic move. Republicans have for many years operated behind closed doors and ended up looking good at the end of the day because people didn't see their ugly sides. Obama is giving Judd Gregg enough rope to hang himself, and in the process he'll be freeing up a senate seat in a couple years. Bush won't be around to save all his republican friends from the fire this time around.

I see this ending with Gregg looking incompetent and possibly criminal, the republican image further tarnished as a result, and Obama looking like a freaking saint trying to give these losers one last chance to prove themselves. Image is practically everything.
