AMERICAblog: What earrings would you choose for visiting a national disaster?

  • tbhull · 1 year ago
    Are those Jesus earrings?
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Wow. She really is Tina Fey as Karen Walker in Will and Grace.

    BRILLIANT CALL!!!
  • jackofallthumbs · 1 year ago
Folks, we're screwing up here. The more we go after her for being a 'hockey mom' instead of a professional politician, the more that she will become a hero to average women trying to juggle career and kids.

I agree that she is not ready to assume leadership of the free world, but do NOT make her a martyr through our sniping.
  • Rechan · 1 year ago
    This.
  • bish8 · 1 year ago
She has to be related to the bat shit crazy religious nut job here in Minnesota by the name of Michelle Bachman. They could be soul sisters.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
I have a feeling the Republicans aren't relishing all the revelations about her this weekend one iota.
  • Rechan · 1 year ago
    Why?

She's an anti-abortion creationist who hates gays. The Evangelicals and single issue voters love her.

She knows jack shit about politics and the world - Like Dubya, like McCain. The blue collar anti-intellectual crowd loves her.

She's a hockey mom. The ignorant housewife vote loves her.

She's all for drilling in ANWAR, her husband worked for BP. Big Oil loves her.

She's attractive. Shallow neanderthals like rich fratboys and Rush Limbaugh love her.

What is there for Republicans to be unhappy with?
  • HelenaMontana · 1 year ago
But then, how many soccer moms read Americablog? I agree with you, though. Pettiness is never attractive, whether it's us or them.
  • MommaKat · 1 year ago
Thank you, personally I want to see more coverage of her involvement with Alaska Gas and Oil Conservation Commision, particularly since Murkowski appointed her chair. I want to hear more about her connections with big oil, becuase they're definitely there. She ran on a stop corruption / clean up corruption campaign, but oddly the targets of that platform, Murkowski and Stevens, were both often spotted standing behind her at her big fundraiser events in 2006. Let's hear about her violations of wildlife protection / endangered species protection lawsuit over the placement of polar bears on the endangered list. Let's dig up more info on the Wasilla sports complex and the litigation involving the land it's built on - that's been ongoing for 9 years and is now headed to the Alaskan Supreme court in an eminent domain suit which was filed when the initial suit determined Lundgren the owner of the land and the City of Wasilla lost. That whole business started under Palin and it's STILL costing the tax payers a boat load. Added to that, she left a deficit in Wasilla of $3000 per resident, and justifies it saying it was for needed reform. There's just so much we can talk about that dispells this myth that she's got any decent executive experience!!

    They actually look like probes imbedded into the jugular veins in her neck. The Rovification process is nearly complete, but she still has to wear these devices, like a retainer. ;

    Funny, that.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I sw these really sweet ones in a New Age shop that had layers to them, each layer with an OM sign on it. They were silver, of course, but they had the nicest tourquoise inlay. I think they'd be perfect. Silver is lunar, you know, and of course tourquoise is perfect for a healing. The OM makes it all spiritual and transdimensional, but you knew that.
  • dad · 1 year ago
what kind of V.P. would you chose?
  • dad · 1 year ago
    Biden would never wear hoops.
    Diamond studs perhaps.
  • Wild_Weasel · 1 year ago
    NBC Nightly News tonight:
McCain tells Brian Williams Palin's got more experience than Obama and she's the best person to take over the White House . . . and McCain cited her PTA experience.

Now that we know McCain has lost his marbles . . .
  • JustAnOldLady · 1 year ago
Cindy also cited her PTA experience on one of the Sunday morning shows........ McCain probably heard it from her...
  • Ann_in_KC · 1 year ago
I saw that and flipped him off. What a joke to site the PTA as executive experience.

Hey, I was a PTA secretary for a year, who knew?

    from http://blondesense.blogspot.com/
Back around the end of July and early August, a nut from Focus on the Family released a video calling for people to pray for rain of biblical proportions to disrupt Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the DNC.
I don't know, but isn't it ironic that Hurricane Gustav is pummeling towards the Gulf Coast just when the RNC is about to begin?
  • donotmakemecomedownthere · 1 year ago
Is it possible that she has never even set foot on Capitol Hill? She doesn't seem to travel much...

She is so Sally Fields wanna-be!

Sarah Palin is Fox News's collective wet dream. A hardcore right wing beauty queen.

It's too bad shes completely inept and has no business on the ticket.. but she will fit right in with the other inept Republicans I guess.

Hey Now, dont pick on the "soul mates"
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
It's not a matter of ghetto or anything else, it's a matter of taste. You don't "dress up" to visit a national disaster. It just strikes me as flashy and inappropriate.
  • thisisshawn · 1 year ago
She didn't visit a 'national disaster' - jackass. She stood behind John McCain at a pressure. Jesus, judging by a few of your latest posts on Palin, you're really grasping for straws here.
  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
"She didn't visit a 'national disaster' - jackass. She stood behind John McCain at a pressure."

So really what the hell are you trying to say. I do admire you for being functionally impaired. And still trying to appear smart.
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
McCain is a national dissaster and the pressure is what McCain is feeling in his pants every time he looks at Sarah from behind.
  • ivyfree · 1 year ago
They are tacky for a woman in her mid-forties, and unprofessional, and presumably, as a VP candidate, she should be trying to dress appropriately. But there are a lot of things one can write about Palin without addressing her taste, or lack thereof. John, you really are terrible on women's issues. Here's a suggestion: if you wouldn't write a similar thing about a man, then don't write it about a woman. It's not usual for a male candidate's wardrobe choices to be commented on. Just use the same standard when writing about a woman. Good gods, the woman didn't know that the VP is the president pro tem of the senate- she asked what the VP does. She trashed the budget of the town she was mayor of. She lied about how she was opposed to the "bridge to nowhere." There are genuine issues; you write better when you stick to them. Oh, and gay rights issues. That's really why I read Americablog; you do a stellar job on gay issues.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I couldn't agree with you more if I tried. This is an awful thread, both in topic and in reading the comments. It made me squirm actually.

This place is great on political policy and gay rights issues, to do a post like this feels disrespectful frankly. We don't usually mock McCain's ties or his ill fitting suits, so why this? It reminds me of Junior High School.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Posting alot of odd comments a day after the thread makes me squirm and reminds me of jr. high...
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Oh great, you disagree with my take on wearing earrings, so then you get snippy?

Shessh Prezzildent, I think these types of comments about Palin's earrings stink, especially in lieu of the voluminous amount of actual issues that we can hold up to scrutinize Palin. It's her policies that we should be debating not whether you like her fashion style!

The more we demean Palin with stupid little bits like this, the smaller WE appear.

and there's nothing "odd" about that...
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
It’s called ridicule, ma'am. And it is also a bit of irony considering the low-class fashions of this upper class candidate.
If the shoe or earring were on the other protuberance I doubt their jest would be as light-hearted and gay in-joke-y.
I also really doubt any of our mischief could appear as small as the 20+ year history of people who advocated placing HIV survivors in isolation camps in the 80s and torture in the 00s.
Also commenting a day after a thread dies reminds me of another more infamous Ablog commentor from the preDisqus days...
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I will leave the sentiments of this post between us alone, as it seems we have both stated our positions in full, however the issue of calling out someone for posting on a thread a day late is hardly worthy of such attitude.

Your tactic of chastising me for posting what you consider to be as "late" seems to be uncalled for and a bit more than bullying. I have been posting on this blog for 3 years now, so if you are trying to make assertions that I am new here, those claims are more than false.

Enough already, I will post when and where I see appropriate.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
    You go girrrrl!
  • surakmn · 1 year ago
Pretty common style of earring for the south. Nothing noteworthy about them. The real issue is McCain's attempt to use a looming crisis for political advantage.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
It's not a common style for presidential candidates. You don't wear bling when running for president, as a man or a woman, especially when visiting a national disaster.
  • surakmn · 1 year ago
Not a common style because female candidates are not common. They're just earrings, and of a style that is quite common in many areas. Nothing unusual about a woman, even a professional one, wearing earrings in public. In Louisiana there's nothing blingy about hoop earrings. Frankly, the topic is as lame as focus on Hillary's wardrobe instead of her policy positions. Some day the electorate will mature past that and take female politicians on their merits.
  • MalibuBarbie · 1 year ago
And we all know McCain is ready to take Palin on her merits, sweetie.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
It probably was her first time to Mississippi....or the South....she wanted to look nice.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
true. I have family in Wasilla and one time they were going to a funeral and the wife sees the hubby in the living room and he says he's ready to go. He was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt. She starts yelling at him that he is not dressed right for a funeral. "Go put yer GOOD jeans on!"
  • Slim Cognito · 1 year ago
Waaaaa? Looks like the earrings my teenage daughter wore to a concert last night.
  • cswartout · 1 year ago
    John,

Don't go there. She will implode on her own without our discussing her fashion sense. We're smarter than they are. But if you want to see something that points out to how stupid she is, read Tomasky

  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
That reminds me of the person who once said (referring to the bible) "If the King James version was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me."
  • nicho · 1 year ago
    Let's be fair.

Those earrings can be used as a flotation device. She could conceivably rescue people with those.

    Her motto: Be prepared.

The more important question is "Why is she there?" She has absolutely no governmental function that requires her disruptive presence. It is merely a chance to exploit tragedy for a campaign photo op.
  • dcredhead · 1 year ago
So I just got a phone call from the McCain campaign. First, I'm a registered independent. Secondly, my phone number is unlisted. It was a call asking me to fill out an absentee ballot and vote for him. Then the "disclaimer" at the end tells me who paid for it, the address and the phone number.

Now -- I called the number to ask

    a) How on earth did you get my phone number
    b) Take me off your list IMMEDIATELY.

    How did that happen?
  • nicho · 1 year ago
    Somebody sold you to them.
  • martha · 1 year ago
    What did they say?
  • dcredhead · 1 year ago
Get this -- NO ONE ANSWERED THE NUMBER. So when you want to call and say "take me off your list" -- you can't. It's infuriating.
  • stevetalbert · 1 year ago
I agree with John A.. the choice of ear rings is important... she doesn't have the sense to know that in a hurricane the wind is strong. Something might fly by and get caught in the hoop and pull her ear lobe off. Shows terrible judgement...
    (I am actually serious)
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Well, the woman dressed up for a hurricane, so you can make your own judgments as to what it says about her.
  • JustAnOldLady · 1 year ago
    Was she wearing high-heels??????
  • ClintonHater · 1 year ago
I'm straight and that even annoys me. Honey get a mirror.
  • VAgirl · 1 year ago
    John,

Thank yo u! Thank you! Thank you! I thought the VERY thing when I saw that! How juvenile! And you know, her voice is SOOOOOOO high school cheerleaderish that it makes my ears hurt! And John McCain wants me, a 52 year old independent woman, to give him a "second look"???!!!! Yeah, right.

But you know he likes his women "ready to please". It's not much different than Cindy showing up in red leather for his primary win, which some of the stock photos show. And evangelicals like this stuff?

I for one am not that stupid. I hope other women like me are not taken in by McCain's "Hefnerism".
  • larz · 1 year ago
Weren't those the same earrings that were worn by "Magic Cockring Ken"'s Barbie?
  • MalibuBarbie · 1 year ago
The very same, honey. I should know.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
My focus during this whole statement was on those ho hoops.
  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
The good news is that if McCman asks for the Bathoops she is ready as rain.
  • Eclectablog · 1 year ago
Sheezo, John. Snark much? There's so much other meat on this whole Palin thing. Hard to see how even giving her earrings a second look is even worth the time...
  • ikonoklast · 1 year ago
With little to no fashion sense of my own, even I noticed how un-vice presidential she looked (the earrings serving as double exclamation points to that fact.) She really is a through-and-through Git-R-Done kinda girl, isn't she?

It's like McCain's campaign is running off the script for some kind of Legally Blonde 3 sequal.

  • gustavmahler · 1 year ago
I think John is right, there is a certain amount of decorum required, You certainly wouldn't wear those earrings to a funeral. Obviously the mkkkain campaign doesn't have a staff person looking after these matters.
  • martha · 1 year ago
OK, so earirngs aren't really important. BUT, it really shows how out of touch she is. NOONE wears earrings like those. They are so 80's.
  • Aanya · 1 year ago
OK, humor me! I believe John McCain is a control freak. When appearing on "The View", he thanked Whoopi Goldberg for dressing for him. She was wearing her usual oversized shirt and sweatpants. Cindy McPain thinks she's the original fashion plate. I see some major problems on the horizon with Sarah Palin's style! Today, hair down, big hoop earrings! Probably tomorrow, Cindy begins dressing Sarah! I can't picture Sarah taking this for more than a day or two.
  • Ellie · 1 year ago
    Pearls!
  • jiminportlandoregon · 1 year ago
Well certainly not those. Imagine flying debris ripping them out of the ear lobes.
  • TinyInteger · 1 year ago
Sarah Palin's accessories choice for this situation is bit tacky, and it's unfortunate that no one from the McCain camp has pulled her aside for some image guidance (I'd be very surprised if we don't see some styling tweaks soon). Okay, hopefully it's not Cindy McCain pulling her aside, because Sarah Palin shouldn't go from Dress Barn to Oscar de La Renta in one week. But... let's keep the focus on more substantial concerns about her qualifications.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
I was thinking Rudy Gernreich reinterpreted by Wednesday Addams as Cindy's "look"...

I didn't know they had QVC in Alaska...Those look like gold-clad Eternas.
She's making a statement girls. She might be leaderesque and all but gosh darn it she's still has a right to look as foolishly ladylike as the early 80's fashion catalogs she's seen back home in the outhouse.

Wow! The libs/Dems must really be scared of this woman if they are picking on what earrings she is wearing!
Or is it just that she does not look like a bull dyke and they can not handle seeing a good looking woman in politics? The Democrats are freaking out! How funny!
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I've got to say that this earring thing is really stretching it...

Heck, most women that I know put on earrings to do almost anything; it's like putting on lipstick or blush in the morning. If you're dissing her choice in earrings, then I would ask why?

Frankly John, this feels kinda "off" to me both in sentiment and in the intent to instigate a pile on. There are PLENTY of things to criticize about Sarah Palin, such as her POLICIES, ACTIONS, MEMBERSHIPS and BELIEFS, but this kind of snarky post is merely tacky, disrespectful (to women) and is most definitely beneath you.

Come on John, you do great posts when attacking policy; that is where we all should be focusing, not on her fashion sense or lack thereof.

Hopefully I never have to put myself in this situation, BUT if so I would quickly put on a pair of casual earrings, brush my hair & teeth, put on some light makeup and out the door...nothing odd or time consuming with that IMO.
