AMERICAblog: What is Disney's involvement with the gay-hating marriage ban in California?

  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
    Take the poll:

  • gwpriester · 1 year ago
72 to 28 in favor of guess who? :-)

If only these same people would keep this in mind in November when they go to the polls.
  • coolcatdaddy · 1 year ago
I'd send the email to Disney's HR department. If they're like most employers, they have policies against political organizing on company time and with company resources.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Oh yeah, not to mention this is an in-kind donation to the campaign, which might be illegal, or at least regulated
  • AdmNaismith · 1 year ago
Do you know if Gena Downey is still at Disney?
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
This economic crisis, the Iraq war, all being financed by the tax payers. Imagine what we could have done with all this money, health care, education, rebuilding of our infrastructure, more help for victims of natural disasters, more money to regulate food and goods coming in from other countries, more border patrol, so much more.

It is like we the tax payers, have absolutely no say in these matters.

I still cannot understand why half this country, want more of this BS.
  • Mailea · 1 year ago
It looks like she's acting on her own accord but using company email to do it. Disney's been cracking down on employees using their addresses for non-work related emails. You probably should forward the information to Disney's HR department, if the email is real.

This is a bit off topic but is there anything that is NOT made in China?

Anyone notice that McCain's spokesperson, Nancy something (rhymes with "toot and hover") blonde, boney, vacant smile, looks like Coulter's sister, has a long neck like Coulter too? She constantly ties a scarf, or wears high necklines. She must be Coulter's relative or something. Does not sound bright either.
  • Upland_Oddball · 1 year ago
Nancy Whatever is a Man! A she-male like Ann Coulter. She is there to give Sarah Palin some gemder-bending eye-candy...just like the other Guys and Gals on the staff.
  • roooth · 1 year ago
If she's a he, then she/he is in a gay marriage.

Her husband, believe it or not, has been the head of the national Mortgage Bankers Assoc., since 2002 - or right around when the housing market started getting wacky. That is a lobbying organization which sought to influence deregulation.

Prior to that, he worked for a Republican Congressman.

I feel like I'm watching a bunch of thieves who were caught red-handed trying to sell themselves as the best choice to protect us against theft.

No, like the Mafia, selling protection in exchange for pay-offs,

Probably, G.D. is part of a cabal of religiously motivated Disney employees who have taken a stand asserting that even on the job, not on their own time, "God's law" trumps corporate policy. This is part of a multifacted effort to give employees the right to NOT do their job or carry out their professiional duty on grounds of religious objecttions. Part of this effort also involves cities like Wasilla, Alaska declaring themselves exempt from laws that offend religious sensibilities, laws like ENDA.

If these folk really wanted to take a stand, they should do so openly, declare their priinciples and take the consequences. But, they are damn Cowards, the whole bunch. I am willing to wager that G.D. when confronted, will deny having anything to do with this, or will try to palm the blame on someone else. That is after trying to delete the Emails and covering his or her tracks.

Almost a month ago, my husband and I were unloading the car from a shopping trip, and a couple approached us. They were pushing " Yes on 8 ". The first out of their mouth was how we plannned to vote on it! Not knowing what 8 even was, we said we weren't familiar with it. After they explained what freedom it was attacking, they assumed we were aboard! They didn't want a signature that I remember! They only wanted permission to put a sign in our front yard! I pointed to the Obama sign on our car, and said absolutely not. They continued to plead for the sign in our yard. Our next door neighbor is a bigot, but since he's 82 years old, we try to overlook it. He said he's getting a sign. To this day, no sign next door. No signs in the neighborhood! I couldn't understand why they were so pushy! They probably were working towards 2 free tickets to Disneyland! I'm happy to hear the signs are lost enroute!

I sincerely doubt that Disney is donating any free resources to this -- other than a stupid employee using their corporate email account... which would put them in the cross-hairs of disciplinary action for using company resources on a political campaign.

If you could post the email including the meta information from the heading, it would help ID the person involved.
  • Upland_Oddball · 1 year ago
I just finished doing a search in Disney's corporate website for info about how to lodge a complaint. What a Wall of BullShit Disney puts up! If anyone else can find a phone number or an email address to an appropriate destination, please post it.

    Gay Days at Disney: good.

Married Gay Days at Disney: bad.
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure that Disney Corp. has nothing to do with this. They constantly are the target of hate groups for allowing 'gay days' at Disneyland and Disneyworld. As others have stated, it is probably on of their thousands of employees, using the company email account. Probably too stupid to figure out that free accounts are available at Yahoo! or Google.
  • KISSman · 1 year ago
    Such a perky, hateful email.

I don't think Disney would be stupid enough to be officially behind this. There are a lot of gay folks who visit Disneyland (including the day when they flood the park on Gay Day) and I just think it would be bad for business if they chose a side. Someone like Disney can't just sneakily organize a campaign to support this hateful measure and think it's not going to get out.

Personally, I believe that this employee was just stupid enough to use her work email instead of a personal email in this case. If that is so and this isn't something Disney officially supports, you would like to believe that such a thing could possibly lead to her termination if folks made a big fuss about this, no?
  • Chrissy · 1 year ago
Jon, all you have to do is forward the email to Alan Braverman at Disney. I'm happy to give you the email address. It shouldn't take more than two hours for Human Resources to fire the person and have them walked to their car by security. Political activities using company resources that are not endorsed by the company is a terminable offense.
  • Freday63 · 1 year ago
Everyone I know that works at the house the mouse built says the place is run by chain smoking homosexuals! (I mean that in the nicest way). This GD must be the token evangelical nut job.
  • decotodd · 1 year ago
Hey John -- I just emailed you. I work at Disney and it is beyond gay-friendly. This is probably a stupid bigot who used company email to do personal campaign outreach.

Thanks to the CA courts, my partner and I were able to get married this summer. This kind of hate done on company time is offensive.

Please get in touch and I will help direct a complaint to the proper department.
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
I used to work for Disneyland in Anaheim in a professional dept.

I DETESTED working there, especially in Orange County that is MEGA CONSERVATIVE.

I would not be surprised if Disney in Burbank is coordinating a YES to discrimination. AMAZING considering all the gays and lesbian working for that company.

Isn't there an official gay employee organization? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DisneyLEAGUE/
Anyone know if Disney League still going on?
  • iWoman · 1 year ago
Maybe it's just someone using their business e-mail address for personal activities?

    Q. Why does the Mouse wear white gloves?
    A. So he doesn't leave finger prints.
  • Mike · 1 year ago
FWIW -- Disney is hosting the 2009 Out & Equal Workplace Summit in Orlando next year... Mickey Mouse was even on-hand in Austin to invite this year's attendees to the party.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Sounds like an idiot using their work e-mail for political organizational efforts. A BIG no no unless they have permission, which is highly doubtful. Send it to the guy that Chrissy mentioned and get this sorry-assed freak fired.

On a related note to the Equality California no on Prop. 8 campaign: PLEASE stop wasting your resources in the Castro neighborhood. I yet again had another color flyer stuck in my door yesterday. Please use your resources wisely and don't lead people to think you don't have the slightest clue. Thanks.

I sent this message along with copy of the alleged e-mail to supplierdiversity@disneysourcing.com

    Dear Disney Friends,

The e-mail copy below is making the rounds in the blogs on the internet. It has the appearance of a hate message coming from someone inside the Disney Corporation. You should be aware of the existence of that e-mail and of the possible damage being done to the culture of diversity that exists in the Disney Family.

    Very truly yours,

I wonder if G.D.'s involved with this plan:

"Mormon Prop 8 Plan: 1,000,000 yard signs " [on Sept 22]

I think the name of the employee should be published.
  • dacnova · 1 year ago
John, it may seem spiteful, but since G.D. apparently used his/her work e-mail address for this I wouldn't hesitate reporting it to Disney. For many years, Disney has not tried to stop Gay Days. Not overt support for us, but they totally ignored the far right's boycott over Disney refusing to try to stop Gay Days. Anyone have any other pro-gay tidbits about Disney?
  • oneboz · 1 year ago
I work for Disney and will look into this. I am not authorized to speak for the company publicly so what I am about to say is personal opinion: Although Disney as an entertainment company is very conservative, as an employer it is very progressive and supportive of its diverse workforce. LEAGUE still exists and appears to have company-wide support, harassment or hiring based on sexual orientation is strictly prohibited, and the company does recognize domestic partnerships. As with most entertainment companies, we have a very diverse workforce including in some very senior level positions. It's very comfortable being gay and working here. This G.D. person is an anomoly and I will make sure that the discomfort it causes me is communicated to the proper people here.

Thank you for helping clear this up a little. Good info.

I got a hate email smear about Obama a month or so ago, signed by an executive at a well known national bank. I checked the guy's name out and he was indeed an exec at the bank..

I sent the guy an email asking if he knew about the email, I figured anything as ugly and obviously fake as the email was, was probably just using a name that sounded respectable.

Boy was I surprised when I got an email back from a different bank employee, telling me that the bank did not allow partisan political messages, etc., on any official coorespondence - and that the employee who had sent it to me had been "takken care of"!

I don't know if they fired the guy or gave him a medal, but the whole thing seemed pretty damn wierd to me.

I really hope we get an update on this situation. I have strong mixed/polar feelings about Disney (love the parks, movies, characters, etc, but think they are generally an evil corporation) and this story is something that could sway my feelings in the negative towards them. I'd be sending out an angry letter tomorrow if this woman is, in fact, representing Disney.

I suppose I'm not a big fan of floating up an idea that an entire company may be gay-hating when, in fact, it might just be one employee not representing the company. I wouldn't put it past Disney, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I hope we get more info and/or a follow-up on this one soon.
  • jasonut29 · 1 year ago
I hope that Disney jumps on this and takes care of this person. Certainly she is entitled (even if its wrong) opinion but to use Disney email to do it should scare the hell out of Disney when they are supposed to be such a gay friendly organization.
  • Hurrycane · 1 year ago
Agree with jasonut29 -- looks like someone using their work e-mail for personal stuff. And didn't Disney World actually invite gay couples to the park, and suffer boycotts as a result? Memory is hazy here...
  • jtw90210 · 1 year ago
I'm not a Disney employee, but I am married to one. Not only does Disneyland offer same-sex Fairy Tale Weddings in their parks, full and unmitigated benefits to same-sex spouses (and domestic partners) (including main gate entrance passes and health care) but they also offer $$$$ for adoption, surrogacy and fertility procedures.

There are louts in every corporation. Hopefully this is somebody who is using their Disney leverage to have a favor of a couple million yard signs printed for a contract for a couple hundred million inflatable plush Poombas with lead eyes that fall out and choke people, and that they are found out and sent to clean the toilets at Universal Studios for the rest of their career. Just using your email for doing some limited personal stuff isn't all that awful - and it works on both sides of the fence.

In answer to your question, isn't everything made in China? Well, the No on 8 yard signs are made here in California by union employees. They cost $8 each to make, and No on 8 asks for a $20 donation to get one. Opponents of Equality just go through the Church roster and put them on everybody's stoop.

Just 40 days left. No on 8 is in urgent need of phone bankers and donations in the $2000-$5000 range. If you do nothing, you can't complain about the outcome.
  • jtw90210 · 1 year ago
This just in: "The woman has already been contacted by Corporate HR and Corporate Legal. Apparently, they've gotten dozens of complaints about this today." So don't hesitate to thank Disney for at least trying to be the Happiest Place on Earth!
