AMERICAblog: What it means

  • dad · 1 year ago
    it means everything.
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
I was just on KOs, and everyone was saying how gracious and great McCain was and "this is the McCain I love." Bullshit. There is no good McCain and there never was. This guy ran the filthiest campaign ever...worse than Bush. Just b/c Obama won does NOT forgive McCain these sins. Stop being pussies Dems. This kind of soft shit is what lost us elections for decades.
  • PeteWa · 1 year ago
I agree with you and I also agree that McCain gave a good concession speech.
I expected much less from him, and I was surprised and I think it will do good what he said.

But it still does not excuse his campaign, or the fact that he showed us who he really is.
  • chowderSF · 1 year ago
Wow, really great comments here, John. And thanks for making Americablog such a great place to be this season! You guys really rock, and keep us all informed. Now, I am going to head out side and partake of the HUGE street party that has formed on Castro Street!!!!!!
  • DeppFan · 1 year ago
I'm with you in spirit ... even though I'm stuck here in Connecticut! Party on!
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Rachel Maddow is having no part of the argument that John McCain was a victim of circumstances. Although they are not dwelling on it right now, she abruptly told Buchanan that John McCain must take responsibility for the campaign he waged. I was glad to hear someone verbalize this on national TV.
  • zavlin · 1 year ago
i saw that and it was really refreshing to hear. Its no wonder why maddow is a rising star.
  • zavlin · 1 year ago
I just watched mccains concession speech and as far as im concerened it was the best speech of his campaign. I'd never heard him use such candor and sound as close to being natural as he did. The campaign changed him and i think he knows that. And now we have a chance to have the leader this country deserves.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I have to agree with you. In the past couple of weeks John McCain was different. He was more believable more real and tonight he actually sounded like a decent guy. IMHO
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
Agreed. McCain seemed most natural tonight.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I cannot not wait for Obama's acceptance speech, It's going to be a doozy.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Greetings my dear, we did it!

We actually helped to make this happen, how about that???
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Hey stranger. Yes we did! My god, the history I have lived through but this tonight is, is, I just can't put words to it.
  • PeteWa · 1 year ago
    Wow!
    I'm so relieved.
Finally a good man in the President's office.
  • mermaidart · 1 year ago
Exhausted is putting it mildly - I might sleep for a week. Today was a day of sporadic weeping, stomachache and borderline panic attack. After several glasses of wine and over 270 electoral votes, I can now relax. Thanks to John for all his great work. Now if Prop. 8 goes down to defeat, it will be a perfect end to an extraordinary day.
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
I was just on Kos and everyone was praising McCain. Fuck that. There is no "good" McCain. He ran a despicable campaign, worse than Bush, and this speech does not forgive him his sins. Don't get soft on him just b/c Obama won. This kind of BS wimpy shit is what lost Dems elections for decades.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
WE WON! We actually did it!

I can't tell you all how proud I am of our country right now...words finally do fail me.

Thank you all, we all help make this possible.
  • mattrett · 1 year ago
Thanks, John...I've haunted your site obsessively now for 18 months. Great work, truly. P.S. I disagree with the people who liked McCain's speech. I felt like he was still kinda coaching this as an African-American-exclusive triumph. I also didn't appreciate his still-angry, still-mob's still-booing. But fuck it, we won. EASILY. Yay us. Matt/BoyCulture
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Joe and I think it was a bitchy speech. We also think he made a Wm. Ayers reference.
  • Elbaba · 1 year ago
it was a bitchy speech but who cares at this point, he lost!

Congrats John, Joe et. al. at Ablog... you guys were instrumental in keeping us informed and now we all have you to thank in part for this wonderful historic event.

    god bless.
  • driver1076 · 1 year ago
John did You see where Ayers finally spoke today and said He hardly knew Obama and that the Repukes made him into a cartoon it was great that he waited until today made me laugh though
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
Thanks for keeping it real John. This nice guy McCain stuff is BS. Let us all remember "John McCain, not Hussein"; "palling around w/ terrorists"; and countless Ayers, Muslim, Arab, terrorist references. Inexcusable. You don't forgive a criminal because he fakes a nice speech. I was hoping the era of soft, gullible Dems was coming to an end, but a lot of them over on Kos are praising McCain's graciousness. Be exuberant about Obama's victory, but do not forget what McCain did.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
I agree 100% and that crying from Sarah Palin was just... well, typical from her.
  • teammarty · 1 year ago
You mean secretary of Education William Ayers.

Or will the left (not the one toe left of center left) get a bome
  • teammarty · 1 year ago
    bone
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
I'm in agreement. He should have done more to silence the boo's and angry shouting. Obama silenced the boo's ALL throughout his campaign. McCain could have put a stop to it in his concession speech and done more to bring us together. He did a half assed, half hearted attempt to shut them up and let them know we need to come together to dig out of the mess Republicans have made for our entire nation.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
    This made me particularly happy:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/04/fox-ne...

Karl Rove is desperate for McCain to win Ohio when Brit Hume breaks in and tells him, "Guess what? Obama just won Ohio." I hope Karl Rove eventually goes to prison for all the damage he has done our nation.

That said, I am so RELIEVED and HAPPY right now!

My happiness is tempered by the fact my home state Oklahoma re-elected that dirt bag Senator Inhofe, but that doesn't shock me much. Oklahoma had a very big Republican turnout, and the state went even more red than usual (if that is possible).
  • dreadpiraterobert · 1 year ago
I'm so happy right now... thank you everyone, I've never been prouder of America.
  • Jessica54 · 1 year ago
McCain's crowd also booed Palin. What a bunch of low-class morons. And, I noticed, nobody of color was in that crowd.

Anyway, I want to give my thanks to John, Joe, Chris, et. al. AmericaBlog is one of the first political blogs I ever got into, and you guys have been a great source for news.

I have to admit I thought Joe was nuts when he said, I believe in Nov 2007, that Obama would win the nomination. Now, I am eating my hat...and am happy to do so :-)
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
I just read this to Joe. He laughed :-)
  • Poopyman · 1 year ago
For what it's worth, this is my only comment anywhere this evening.

It's been a hell of a ride, fellow DFHs. The hundreds of dollars and hours spent were worth it. Once it was officially called, Mrs. P broke into tears, and Gene Robinson almost simultaneously choked up. The hundreds of thousands on TV in Grant Park, Times Square, and all the other locations looked like they were doing the same thing. And, by God, it's the best response to the impact of this night.

Now there's champagne to be finished. Good night all, and bless you all - President Obama most of all.

I absolutely agree with every single one of your sentiments!

However, one thing I hope we all keep in mind is that our behavior as winners is much more important than our behavior had we lost. That's all.

    Go us!
  • jennywa · 1 year ago
I totally agree! We need to be graceful winners and show how decent people behave.
Thanks John A. et al. You've kept me sane during crazy times.

Valid point John. I always feel some sympathy for any conceding party- until the crowd got nasty and I pointed my finger at the TV and said- Mc Cain you, Rove and Palin created that mob. Seriously they behaved like a lynch mob the entire campaign.
  • canuck55 · 1 year ago
Does this mean that Sarah will keep the clothes now?
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
I feel glad and relieved that it finally happened.

But I'll never stop thinking about how much better the country would have been if Kerry had won in 2004 or Gore had won in 2000.

I used to vote Republican before the Chimp got in, but I'll never vote Republican again--for any office ever.
  • decotodd · 1 year ago
I'm thrilled for Obama, but the wave of anti-gay measures passing is VERY disturbing (bans passed in FL and AZ; adoption ban in ARK). Even CA seems close to passing Prop 8 (55 v 45 as of this moment with 6% reporting).

    A bittersweet victory

  • Webster · 1 year ago
We have to be better citizens than the Republicans were during the Bush years though. We have a duty to keep our new Democratic representatives honest--and responsive--to the real needs of Americans. They have to know that we'll be watching them, closely, and that they must restore the Constitution and respond to the needs of America's citizens. We must remain vigilant.
  • austinrunn · 1 year ago
    John -

    Use this word. "Mandate".

This is a Mandate. We have to hammer that home. There is a real danger that the Beltway cocktail crowd sees this as just McCain or Bush and not as a real movement to Obama.

Mandate. This is one - and we have to claim it.

If not, it will be taken away. As brazenly as they tried to play 2004 as a mandate they will play this as a simple "center-right" correction of a Republican party going astray.

    Mandate.

I hate to be the wet blanket but it ain't over until the fat Supreme Court Justice sings. And as a wise old William once wrote: there's many a slip betwixt the cup and the lip. Let's just keep our fingers crossed, and hope that the shrub goes quietly into the night. However, between now and Jan. 20, let's hoist a few! We worked hard and we deserve OUR TIME in the sun!

    I love ya America!

I do not extend a hand to the repugs, they never give up.....remember Tom Delay, Newt Gingrich, Tom Coburn, James Inhofe, Karl Rove.....these cockroaches will still be around.
  • slappymagoo · 1 year ago
John, the only thing I disagree with you on is the idea that people booing the concession speech when the victor is mentioned being unusual. It happens all the time, it's practically a cliche. The loser says something like "I just got off the phone with (insert winning politician's name here)..." and then the crowd boos, and the loser puts his hands up and says "Now, now, please...come on..." and then he goes on to say that he congratulated the victor (perhaps more scattered boos) and now is the time for all of us to band together - AS AMERICANS - and work to get aside our petty differences and start working together to build a better tomorrow (grudging applause). This crap was old when John McCain was trying to earn the money to buy one of those fancy horseless carriages that were all the rage at one time.

Having said that, yeah, McCain could've/should've been far more gracious. In fact, for once, I would've liked to see the booers get read the riot act, maybe then I would've been impressed (finally) with McCain telling the crass members of his support group to put a sock in it, that it's their white-hot-hate that contributed to his loss.

  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
One other thing about the whole McCain was booby trapped by the financial meltdown like Pat Buchanan tried to float. No one twisted McCain's arm to make him act so erratic and intone, "The fundamentals of our economy are strong!" McCain wasn't hurt by circumstances. He was hurt by his erratic, and foolish responses to circumstances. He was also hurt by his horrible judgment in crafting disastrous policies that have driven our nation into a ditch.

I do think Republicans are in a state of shock right now. They are so used to getting their way, even when the polls don't really match up to the results. They can't believe someone from the other party is actually allowed to win this time.

Pity the poor conservatives, John. We libs always had Canada as a fallback position, but where will the cons go? Certainly not to Canada--it has bilingual education, gay marriage, and (oh, the horror!) universal health care.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Mexico.

It has a corrupt government run by a single party draining the nations resources for its rich croneys and sweatshops by the dozens. No pesky environmental or worker safety regulations and a health care system designed for those who can afford to be healthy. And a permanent underclass who will do housework, laundry and kitchen work for pennies.

    It's a conservative dream.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
My thoughts exactly. Either Mexico or Central America, which they destroyed in the 80's.

he didn't do enough to stop the boos again tonight.
BUT THE BEST MAN WON! FINALLY!
  • mf_roe · 1 year ago
If he comes close to the goals he expresses, Obama will be the best President in my lifetime. Now is the time he will need our support, he will need the people behind him if he is to battle the old pols in Washington, both Dems and Repugs. He wants to lead us to a better place, we must follow and support him with the same spirit he shows
  • MNUSA · 1 year ago
It was interesting to listen to the conservative pundits tonight explaining how Obama will have to move away from the left to the center and he'll have to do this and he'll to do that. I wanted to scream. They have screwed up this country royally. They've destroyed our image in the world and brought us to the brink of a depression. They've gotten us into two endless wars. Obama was given a mandate by the people of this country. He can establish a new paradigm.

It's been a tremendously busy and stressful day, and this great victory still hasn't really sunk in yet for me. Probably just too much pent up anxiety. I am still awaiting some good news on Prop. 8, but things look bad now...

My thoughts on McCain: John McCain is now the epitome of the tragic American: He literally sold his soul off, betrayed everything he'd built his public persona on, to become president. And he lost. I can't imagine how he can look himself in the mirror or begin to come to terms with his own self image. Just sad, just pathetic...
