AMERICAblog: When reporters first asked McCain about Charles Keating, McCain called them 'liars'

  • gwpriester · 1 year ago
I sent this letter to the editor this morning to several papers where Palin spoke and made her pallin' around with terrorist remarks:

The recently repackaged Sarah Palin, an invention of the McCain campaign, and a woman who is about as believable as a $3 bill, recently said at a campaign stop in Englewood, Colorado, that her running mate's opponent has been "palling around with terrorists...!" The terrorist in question, Bill Ayers, committed acts against the unpopular Viet Nam war when Mr. Obama was about 6 years old. Mr. Ayers is now a well respected professor of education at the University of Illinois in Chicago and a productive member of society. It should be obvious, even to Mrs. Palin, that when Mr. Obama met Bill Ayers at an education conference (Mr. Obama was a professor of constitutional law at the time), that it was not for terrorist reasons. But this does not stop the desperate Republican party and the McCain campaign from trying to make something, anything, out of nothing.

What voters want to hear is the truth. For example, that Senator John McCain was censured by his fellow senators for "poor judgement" for his involvement in the Keating Five scandal, a scandal that in the 1980s resulted in the failure of Lincoln Savings, and which cost 21,000 elderly persons their entire life savings. Charles Keating contributed $112,000 to Mr. McCain's campaign in return for Mr. McCain using his influence in the Senate to stonewall an investigation of Mr. Keating and Lincoln Savings.

Fortunately, Senators Obama and Biden have the truth to run on and don't have to fabricate scandals to deflect the public's attention from the real issues facing this nation.
  • triple7s · 1 year ago
Well said. Now lets see if OLD Tom picks up on any of the KEATING SCANDAL at the debate. It certainly is RELEVANT in light of the banking failure as of late. I have wondered how many of the elderly who lost their LIFE SAVINGS, actually DIED as a result of that awful mess. Lets not forget that the infamous BUSH BROTHER, NEIL, escaped Colorado with MILLIONS from the S&L debacle. Wonder whatever happened to him?

gwpriester: I plagerized your letter to the editior and have sent it to my local paper. I tried to get your ok last night, but I couldn't leave a reply using foxfire and vista...wouldn't let me in. I hope you won't be upset. It is a great letter and needs to be shared with as many as possible. I thank you in advance.

    WTF alert:
Just saw this on CNN's ticker

(CNN) – The fund-raising prowess of the Obama campaign may be put under a microscope, if the Republican National Committee has its way.

The RNC announced that it plans to file a complaint with the Federal Election Committee Monday that seeks an audit of the more than $450 million donated so far to Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

The complaint will address two issues highlighted in a recent Newsweek report about the Obama campaign’s fund-raising. First, the RNC will ask the federal agency responsible for enforcing campaign finance laws to audit and inquire into whether the Obama campaign accepted any money from foreign nationals, a contribution source prohibited under federal law.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
I saw that too........I hope all of their smear and slime backfires on them.....they are worse than disgusting.
  • FreakOfNurture · 1 year ago
Here's the link. It's hard to find. To summarize: Obama says "bring it on!" I feel like donating more just to add to the paperwork.

  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
The agency they speak of almost doesn't exist. Dems and others have complained about McCain's illega, approach to federal funding of his campaign. Nothing happened because Bush failed to appoint persons to the board. So, I think it's just another headline distraction.
  • RainbowPhoenix · 1 year ago
Maybe asking him this is what will finally make him lose it. If that happens, especially during the debate, we've got the election in the bag. Cross your fingers ladies and gentlemen.

I've already sent e-mail to diffrent media out lets asking why in this time of failing banks they are not asking about the Keating 5? we need to pound this everyday to the MSM.

Oh, I have been thinking this all day. Obama was 8 years old when Ayers committed his "crimes" ( I don't think ayers was convicted of anything}. He meets up with him 40 years later when both are working on a commission for education for children in Chicago. McCain, at 54 , a US Senator, is reprimmanded by the Senate for giving favors to convicted crooks in his office as Senator. 8year old=54 year old senator. What?

Maybe Brokaw, a guy with a highschool education , has figured it out.

The McCain people are simply trying to change the subject because McCain doesn't have anything left to lose, he probably figures so what if they talk about Keating or Liddy just as long as Obama gets knocked down a bit too.

McCain is in the fight of his life and he doesn't have his father or grandfather of Cindy's money to save him so he is swinging wildly and he is hoping that one of those wild swings land.
  • Lyrebird · 1 year ago
They wanna talk associations? How 'bout all the folks on the McCain campaign bus, whose ties to the Wall Street catastrophe were identified in an OpEd piece in that hippie rag, the Wall Street Journal:

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122221440058969...

Why aren't people hounding McCain about this? (e.g., why'd he need to go to Washington to respond to the crisis... he could just sort out the whys and wherefores on his bus!)

To say nothing of Hagee, the other scary minister he likes, etc...
  • grandma · 1 year ago
    Digby:

Media Matters wonders why nobody has yet discussed McCain's relationship with his old pal, convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy.

On October 4, The New York Times published a 2,140-word front-page article about Sen. Barack Obama's association with former Weather Underground member William Ayers -- at least the 18th Times article this year mentioning that association. But the Times has yet to mention, let alone devote an entire article to, Sen. John McCain's relationship with radio host and convicted Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy.

    http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/still-wa...

Seems McCain has quite a few scandals in his background
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Rush Limbaugh, another guy with a highschool education, has also figured it out. Why go to Harvard if you can become a billionaire by just talking common sense? I think the day of the "effete" liberal snob is over. Obama, unfortunately, is the last player in the game. Would have been better to have a blueblood to ring the bell. But, the chore fell to Obama...

Why don't we all just do away with any book learning as you have done then we will be as smart as you and Rush.

My Obama sign was stolen from my yard as well as my neighbors a couple days ago. I live in a very reubug area of St Louis with tons more McCain signs. My answer was to order aother sign. Tonight a youg guy with a 2 year old in a stroller came to our door and asked us to sign a letter to all the newspapers pointing out the tactics of the repugs, because they were thieves, . He had noticed all the Obama signs that had been stolen and was fighting back . He asked me to make a police report. I will. He gave me hope. Things might really be changing.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
Obama as a black man could never have run on McCain's background if Obama had done propaganda tapes, left his wife and children for a rich younger woman, been involved with Charles Keating or Liddy and had his medical history Obama's entire presidential campaign would have been over long ago.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Both Obama and Michelle admitted to having affairs. Have you not been listening?
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
Hearing those little voices in your head again? The Obamas may have had relationships with others before their marriage. After all, no one expects a 31 year old male to come to his marriage a virgin these days, if they ever did, but as for having been "adulterous", I have never heard of such a thing. You'd fit in right well with Sarah Palin and her smears.
  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
No way is Busboy as smart as the Alaskan Dingbat.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
You know, DJ, "Alaskan Dingbat" is kind of catchy. You might want to copywrite that before you're pre-empted. Love it!
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
When did they have affairs while they were married and please provide us with a verifiable link and I find it interesting that out of all McCain's failings you picked up on the adultery.

I just saw this email from John Kerry re: putting $1 million of his campaign money into close Dem. races around the country... That's cool!
I still think when they have a majority, someone needs to push Impeachment per The Constitution. If Kerry had been rightfully elected or Impeachment rightfully imposed on Bush some time ago, we wouldn't be in this infernal shithole situation now. The bad guys are trying to put us back to where we would have been if we had lost to the Nazis!

Kerry is right that we need a knee-breaking strategy to keep a Dem power base to protect the nation from The Bush Legacy.

"What's happening in our economy right now is the result of too many years of deregulation, tax cuts to the rich, and anything-goes capitalism. Folks, we've gone too far down this path to be able to get us back on track with any half-measures.

We need the strongest Democratic majority possible to get the change we need in Washington. We need to make sure a handful of Republican Senators can't block President Obama as he tries to get our country back on track.

It's time to push even harder to completely change Washington. We need to aim to get 60 votes in the Senate to push real change in our country.

So I have an announcement: I just gave a million dollars from my campaign to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to try to make this happen. I'm making this announcement to you here in the johnkerry.com community first because I want you to join me in my commitment to get this change.

Please give $25, $50, or $100 to some great Democratic Senate candidates to help:

    http://www.actblue.com/page/pushforchange

These Democrats are facing a barrage of misleading and dishonest attacks from their opponents and from well-funded outside groups. The Republicans are desperate to hold on to some power, and they are throwing the kitchen sink at these folks.

Al Franken, Kay Hagan, Mark Udall, and Tom Allen need your support. They are all in winnable races, and they are all under intense attack. We need to win each and every race we can to get to the 60 votes we need and shunt the Bush-McCain Republicans aside and get to work.

So please give what you can:

    http://www.actblue.com/page/pushforchange

Thank you so much. We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track.

    Thanks,

    John Kerry"

A psychotherapist friend of mine has this to say about McCain:

"But no one could survive 5 years or more in an enemy prison camp in isolation, being tortured and starved, and not be gravely affected. How would symptoms of PTSD -- nightmares, depression, paranoia, isolation, mood swings, angry outbursts -- effect Senator McCain's ability to lead? Is the American public seeing signs of PTSD cloaked in terms like "maverick"? Traumatic events in our lives affect us for a lifetime, and terrible trauma affects us terribly."
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
I seem to remember Obama denounced Rev. Jeremiah Wright; however, I haven't heard a word about Palin denouncing Rev. LetMePayTheWitch OutOfYou.
I can tell you which of the two scares me the most, and it isn't some Rev. Loon talking smack about America. It's the one wanting to turn the clock back to the Salem Witch Trials.

Damn, I'll be the first one torched, I'm sure.
