AMERICAblog: Who cares what a psychologist has to say about the Bible?

  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
childish, i'd say...as opposed to childlike.
  • scytherius · 1 year ago
There are approximately 10 million reasons why Dobson is a buffoon. But the one I will use now is the fact that he even thinks he is a final authority on the Bible exceeds amusing.
  • NormandRob · 1 year ago
I honestly think this is another case where we need to respect those who, because of their faith, don't agree with our lifestyle choice. When Barack Obama said that the institution of marriage must only be between a man and a woman, he was merely expressing his religious freedom. I'm sick of people who seem to want to criticize Barack for every little thing due to their own racism. We need to stop forcing our lifestyle on others and respect their choices too. http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
If by using the word "lifestyle" you mean gay, could you please stop using that word? Thanks.
  • FrankSea · 1 year ago
I don't have to respect anyone's "right" to attack me. If shitstains like Dobson want to throw mud, then they should get ready for a truck of mud to be dropped on their own heads.
Concern trolls like you can just sit it out and fret that everyone will play nice.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
when they stop trying to push THEIR views into legislation intent on controlling my life... I'll stop trying to get them to see the error of their ways.

by the way, since when have we forced anything on the christian right??

as I remember, BUSHCO brought up gay rights as a wedge issue to motivate the christian right to vote repugnican.

we didn't bring it up, THEY did.

besides, human rights should not be open to interpretation... of course, this is a bunch of people represented by an administration that needed to interpret what actually constituted torture so... nuff said.

being gay or lesbian is NOT a lifestyle, dear. Get educated

Ah yes that pesky Bible, Dr. Dobson...may I tell you a little about the Book of Leviticus? First of all, except for some Ivy League Divinity grads...mostly Anglicans and UCC Congos...who took 8 semesters of Hebrew so they could read the Torah in its original language, thus avoiding any translation errors....most of your cohorts down here in Jesusland do NOT read Hebrew. If they did, they would find that the word "abomination" translates, in various forms, but oftenly, as SCHICKSA. Yes Dr Dobson...that is also the same word that Jews use to denote a Gentile girlfriend or wife of a Jewish man...SCHICKSA...it means "abomination". Well I hate to tell you this Dr Dobby but your wife is a SCHICKSA....she is an abomination...as are you. Now be on your way.

Wiki has a note in it saying his license for being a psychologist in California expired in April 2008. So, looks like he isn't even that anymore. He's a sicko and needs help himself. Obama was right about everything he said. Dobson is scared of the real truth and is the one distorting the Bible.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Bet the IRS would be interested in that.

I mean, they would be interested if Bush didn't load the IRS with Wingnut Tools.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
actually, if I were a parent and a child psychologist started spouting off about what the Bible said??

I'd take my child and run.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
So, the guy gets whipped by his mother with her girdle, goes to school to figure out why, somehow decides it's because of a liberal conspiracy, then starts some kind of mega church for other people who blame the liberals because their mothers beat them with their girdles.
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
Maybe Dobson could be busted for practising Christianity without a licence.
  • marthajoy7 · 1 year ago
Actually, if my information is correct. Doctor Dobson is not even a valid psychologist. He likes to pretend that he is, but in reality, his degree is not in that field.
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
    Then perfect!

I think he has a career once "Dr." Laura passes on.
  • Psyche · 1 year ago
He's not a "child psychologist." His degree is in Child Development -- not a clinical degree. His father was a minister for a fundamentalist sect. Actually, he likes to keep his background ambiguous so he can hand out religious advice or advice on how to raise your kids depending on his mood. In either case, it's often bad advice. Most psychologists diligently refrain from publicly expressing their views on the bible. It's not in our "scope of practice."
  • gerbear · 1 year ago
I am a clinical (child) psychologist, licensed in the state of Minnesota. A few years ago, probably in response to the "Dr. Laura" fiasco (impersonating a a bona fide credentialed mental health professional) I contacted the Board of Psychology in Colorado and was very disappointed to learn that Dobson was licensed as a psychologist there. Licenses need to be renewed every two or three years, so there's a chance that he is not licensed currently, but he has been. Please don't think I'm defending him in any way, but those who want to discredit him will have to look for other material.
  • Psyche · 1 year ago
I've checked in the past as well. Don't know how CO is set up but in
Ohio we have a generic license and psychologists are responsible for
staying within their scope of practice. The license, per se, doesn't
say what kind of psychologist someone is. I checked extensively at
one point and could find no evidence that Dobson had "retreaded" as a
clinician. If you've found something would be interested to know
about it. Actually, Dobson published his first book of advice on
child-rearing shortly after getting his degree, apparently in answer
to Spock, made lots of money and to all intents and purposes left the
field - although he seems to have retained his license.
  • SociologistTina · 1 year ago
Uh-- what license? What's his license IN?
  • gerbear · 1 year ago
I don't think I have the stomach to investigate this a second time, but as you likely know, there probably is more public information available from the Board of Psychology in Colorado, if it's similar to MN. When I looked into this, I learned only that he was licensed and "in good standing" or something to that effect. If it's available, I'd be very interested in knowing more about what Dr. Dobson lists as his "competencies." On the other hand, maybe I don't really want to know. What little I've learned about his comments about dhild development and parenting have made me cringe. I know that there are many who consider him to be authoritative and influential; I consider him to be a blot on our profession.

Couldn't agree with you more, Psyche.

Who care what anyone has to say about the Bible? Who cares what the Bible has to say about anything?
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Note to Obama: Ignore Dobson.
PS: Keep that red-faced, gnarly-finger, lying sonuvabitch distanced from your campaign. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=2008-06... Ditto his hatemongering, misogynist, NEO wife and not one penny of the $ I sent you goes to her debt. Plus vote NO on FISA.
    Then we're cool again.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Dobson HATES Obama because he doesn't have any sons with whom he can shower, just two little girls. Dobson hasn't yet received Divine Revelation about the Godliness of Michelle showering with the girls.

Anathemas in all directions on the whole and entire lot of 'em!
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
I'm surprised that dobson is that well educated, and even more surprised that he's not a fundie preacher - Without researching him, I thought sure he was.. It's very scary (to say the least) that someone like him is in a position to council and influence impressionable children.
  • Psyche · 1 year ago
Even more scary is that he's written a lot of books that his numerous fans take seriously and that advocate corporal punishment and a lot of other crazy stuff.
  • nico_shalom · 1 year ago
I agree! I can't believe he has a PhD in child development and still writes the insane stuff he does.
  • fl79tr · 1 year ago
If I remember correctly, part of his beef with Obama was that the old testament doesn't apply anymore because of the new testament. Well what about all the creation mythology? Lets hope that doesn't apply anymore either.
  • Psyche · 1 year ago
And how about all the OT stuff they use to justify demeaning gays?
  • lost_nacf_gop · 1 year ago
YES! Another reason to despise Dobson. He's a freakin' trOJan, too!
  • shell · 1 year ago
What a hoot! Little Dobbie is offended by being compared to Sharpton! Remember this -- THIS is what drives the little boy nuts! Both my brother and father have PhDs -- it doesn't take a rocket scientist. But Dobson is really upset about those not RESPECTING him for his PhD.

I love it! He should be compared to a left-wing reverend, or -- better yet -- to some other uneducated fool. It really GETS to him. His head will explode sonner than it normally would.
