AMERICAblog: Why doesn't ABC News just become a blog and get it over with?

  • MNPundit · 1 year ago
COULD it be used for an abortion?
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
The money I get when you buy an AMERICAblog tshirt could be used for an abortion. My tax return could be used for an abortion. Your stimulus check could be used for an abortion. Your Toyota could be used to drive someone to an abortion. I mean it all gets a bit silly.

I only started commenting here because you opened up the comments so you don't know my style yet. (Not that I'm memorable enough for your to remember me but...)

I don't think fetus are people so I don't care one bit about "killing babies." And if after viability there needs to be an abortion? Not my business, I'm not beat up over it. I go along in public with "yeah it's icky...." for political reasons only. So the upshot here is, I wasn't trying to say the headline could be true, I was just curious if you could use the coupon for abortions since those things are expensive. No gotcha attached.

Haven't watched network news in so long, I don't even know who's on what network. From what I've heard for several years,I'm not missing much.

The issue of the gift certificates was on the The Daily Show last night. Jon Stewart showed what looked like an ad that said something about not wanting someone else in your life or something. So ABC isn't the only one at fault - assuming that there is fault.

So is the wingnut logic that people who were not going to get an abortion will all of a sudden decide to get one because they have a planned parenthood gift certificate?!

Like, "Oh, I was debating between an iPod and an abortion, but now that I have this gift card, I'm going to go with the abortion!"

I'd think that people getting abortions would be getting them no matter the price. And people who didn't want one wouldn't change their mines because it got cheaper. I've been through that decision. Money is not a deciding factor at all. That being said, if you feel its the right decision for you, the financial help would probably be appreciated, but it won't change your decision at all. I'd imagine that the demand curve is very inelastic.

Now things like condoms, AIDS testing, etc. those are things where people might actually change their behavior given the financial incentive.

'd think that people getting abortions would be getting them no matter the price.

Don't always bet on it. I'm very, very far from being an expert on this, but I've been led to understand that for some finances present an impediment to getting an abortion done early.

I do, on the whole, agree with you though; I think something like this is far more likely to be used for care which might otherwise be treated as optional.

Well except it CAN be used for an abortion. So it IS a gift certificate for an abortion. The Daily Show got this right and so did ABC. It's just in-your-face antagonism for Planned Parenthood to do this and they know it and they're probably pleased with the result.

That's like saying having health insurance is simply a coupon for an abortion. I'm sure from a pro-life perspective it is. But for the rest of normal America, it's not.

Cash! Outlaw cash! American Express Gift Checks! Outlaw them! They can be used for abortions!

    Sheesh...

Well, considering Bush is expanding the "moral objection" exclusion to health care workers who don't want to dispense birth control, assist at certain procedures, etc., it would seem that Planned Parenthood would be a safer place to go than some doctor's clinic or hospital where you might not get the services you need even though you pay them.

And BTW, that expansion of "moral objection" could also be seen as health care workers not wanting to attend to gays, AIDS patients, drug addicts or other patients they deem "morally objectionable." It ain't just about women's health, although that is bad enough.

ABC is all kinds of Jesus crazy; this doesn't surprise me at all. I forget exactly where on the chain the wingnuttery lies, but as soon as ABC bought Disney, the latter started coming out with Bible story movies and being otherwise overtly religious. Even ABC is different. And don't they also run the family channel and such? I'm tellin' ya...they drank some kool-aid or other a bit ago.

I'm sure they're still making a buck as Touchstone, of course - gotta be like the Mormons and not let those pesky beliefs get in the way of mammon...hahaha

Most of the anti-choice people have been conditioned to believe that Planned Parenthood is primarily an abortion mill. That is so untrue. When I went to them for a pregnancy test as a (horrors) unwed, unemployed, uninsured woman, they counseled me on my choices. They actually encouraged me to carry on with the pregnancy when it became clear that I didn't want one, but was concerned how I would make it with no job, no husband, and a baby, then pointed me to resources that would allow me to have the baby and get on my feet financially. They also provided me with pre-natal care. Pregnancy termination is only one of many services they provide.
Women have been getting abortions (legally and otherwise) for thousands of years. Like someone else here pointed out, if a woman needs an abortion, for whatever her reason, she will make it happen, even if it results in her death. Before Roe v. Wade, I personally knew two young woman who performed self abortions, one with a knitting needle (yes people actually did that) and the other had her boyfriend kick her in the stomach. Do we really want to go back to those awful days?

Let's not forget this little gem from yesterday's "top stories"..... "Can Macho, Non-Metro Actors Play Gay? Sean Penn follows in Gyllenhaal, Ledger's footsteps with 'Milk'."

There's that charged question again instead of it being a statement. It let's Lucinda off the hook as an homophobe if she states it as a question.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
They also stay away from law suits by asking it as a question rather than a statement.
  • CDS2 · 1 year ago
Well, FOX is reporting the gift cirtificate correctly, as a gift to be used for all of the available services, not only abortion.

I removed ABC (local 13) from the memory in my TV right after that Dem debate debacle with George Steph as moderator, who went after Obama and softballed Clinton. I looked up the shows I watch in the listings and it turns out I never watch ABC shows anyway. So when I surf around with my remote, ABC never comes up. It's more convenient for surfing and I don't have to risk listening to that asshat Halperin anymore and I don't wind up subsidizing right wing bigots. I strongly recommend that everyone do this. Just ignore them out of business.
