AMERICAblog: Why the media should apologize

  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
Herr Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, would be so proud of our Fourth Estate right now!
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
I was thinking Herr Hitler would be so proud of the Republican Party. Booed NBC like good Nazi thugs last night. Someone pointed out the contrast between the 'Pugs and NBC and how the Democrats treated FOX at our convention. Many people think we should become like them and fight dirty just to win, but I say we will lose America if we do that. What would be the alternative to the Republicans and the so so so so Christian right? The good people must win this time by their decency. (We also have the issues on our side.)
  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
And, what has Sarah Palin done for this country except give a speech on 8/3/08? A speech she didn't even write...

Thanks, Roger; I suspect the media is not going to be kind to these Rethugs. After all, politicians are all fair game, Ms. Palin...better wake up. BTW, does anyone else know of anybody who became a foreign policy expert virtually overnight? In around 5 weeks, I believe, it's going to be fun watching Biden eviscerate Palin.

    Thanks, Sept. hasn't registered yet. : )
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
That's the last we hear from Sarah Palin. Oh there will be stump speeches but the press is not going to get anywhere near her for questions and answers. McCain/Palin will try to get out of debating too because they are incompetent to discuss the issues.
  • BarrieT · 1 year ago
Palin will have the great strength of not having a clue she has been eviscerated. Being thick-skinned is easy when you are just plain thick.

Hatch is taking about Leiberman on MSNBC. He is warning the Democrats not to pick on poor Joe.
  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
That's OK, LIEberman will find his ass out of his committee assignments soon enough...
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Jon Stewart showed footage of Lieberman praising Obama effusively. In 2006, when he needed Obama's help with the black vote in CT. And Obama, like a damn fool, was a nice guy and endorsed him.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
Stewart is just on a roll. Did you see the clip where he parodied the Republicans stuck at the Excel Center during Gustav by using the Superdome during Katrina as a model?
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
One of the most clever and trenchant things they've ever done.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
The bathroom stall thing last night was classic as well. So was the segment on the hypocrisy of them saying one thing one day and saying something else the next. Stewart has been on a roll.

And remember everyone, tonight will be his take on the Palin speech....I can't WAIT!!!!
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Ooh...With that ultra thin skin old Joe could spring a leak...

  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
What is new? Mike Allen is a slobbering stuttering dipshit fool.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Joe did a lot of damage to the Democrats...more than Palin's speech.
  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
LIEberman did a lot of damage to himself...and besides, the Rethugs weren't exactly whooping in the aisles when he committed himself to them at the convention. Traitorous thug that he is...
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
Joe did the damage to Joe. Everyone knows Joe Lieberman for what he has become and it is a sad story of politics over his humanity and character. Joe will get the boot good and hard when McCain crashes with the Earmark Queen.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
So are you saying they're all offended over at Repugico?
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Well said, Roger. I hope the media does not get intimidated by these rethuglicans, and continue to investigate and keep us informed. The media gave George "the nincompoop" Bush a free pass, and look at the mess we are in.
Shrill Sarah is a rookie with questionable qualifications and record. It is up to the media to let the country know what type of character we have, who might be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Anyone taken up with the speech, should ask themselves, why she did not cover the most important issues facing this country, like the economy, jobs, health care, and education....she should get an A+ for mockery.
  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
Well, I did hear an Alaskan refer to her as "brittle" in her dealings with others...remember, her classmates in HS referred to her as "Barracuda" and I never heard that word used for anyone who was nice to others...

    Hear, hear!
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I have been visiting Politico for a couple of months. There is some balance now with Ben Smith and occasionally a few others. It is finally starting to become what they said they envisioned, a place where some of our leading journalists can print their views.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I've been reading politico since they started and have found them to be consistently rightward in tenor. Heck they may have a couple of moderates now, but they have not nor ever will employ anyone who consistently represents a left of center view.

But then again, I have been wrong before, so let's hope that they are trying to "fix" the problems inherent in the original mix of the company.

But frankly, anytime any company, group, magazine, newspaper or such claims they will be UNBIASED in their reporting; I believe that is the time that pigs WILL fly.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago

    Sullivan on Roger's article:

The McCain camp landed America and the world with someone who could technically be president of the US next February with close to no vetting and no real knowledge of who she is - and we are supposed to just accept the propaganda being peddled by people who once worked for Karl Rove.

Never again. Keep asking. Keep Googling. In so many ways, the Republican myth machine has finally met its match. It's not the "Washington establishment" for Pete's sake. They were busy sipping champagne and nibbling on truffles with Washington celebrity McCain at fabulous restaurants until very recently. It's you, ordinary citizens with modems and questions. That's who they're afraid of. That's who they want to intimidate.

    Not this time.

  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
OMG, I just about fell off my chair! Roger Simon, a man I really detest, is hitting back at McCain's attempts to silence the press. I don't know if any of you know or have read any of Simon's editorials or have seen him on MTP but he is NO lover of Democrats. Actually he has said some pretty awful things so that is why this is SO surprising.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
OK. I'll grant you that his shrill and sarcastic response to a shrill and sarcastic speech was funny.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
He is so anti Democrat that you just want to bash him for breathing. This is a major falling out of the press with McCain and will do nothing to help Palin.

Let's just see how this tiff progresses, maybe one more big barbeque from McCain and all will be well.
  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
As a former working mother (and I only had 2 kids to raise after an early divorce), I can honestly say I can't relate to this woman. And there are millions like me. I have a feeling Palin's efforts to seem like a normal working mother is going to fall flat for most of us...she really must believe we're stupid if she thinks we can relate.

Besides, I want someone who's more educated and knowledgeable than I am--not someone "average" and anti-intellectual...not someone who's just more clever by half.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
    Me too !

McCain graduated 894 out of a class of 899.
Palin graduated from U of Idaho with a BS degree in Journalism

Obama...A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review.
Biden graduated from Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware and, in 1965, from the University of Delaware in Newark, where he double-majored in history and political science. He went on to receive his J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law in 1968

8 years of no brains in the White House has left this country a mess.
  • MNUSA · 1 year ago
Yet Bush has an MBA from Harvard. He got his undergraduate degree from Yale. He couldn't get into the University of Texas, so he just enrolled in the MBA program at Harvard. So perhaps it's not the degrees, or the schools, but the person.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago

the funny thing is... the NEOCONS are trying to paint the Dems (and anyone who questions palin) as 'sexist'...

because by trying to point out that she fails by all of THEIR standards, we're not treating a woman as equal.

questioning whether or not its prudent for a hockey mom with a 5 month old, and four other children (don't mention that one is 17 and expecting!!) to abandon raising her children (face it, that's what the religious right would call it, isn't it??) to pursue her career... is sexist.

egad. let them measure anyone that isn't like them by their standards... but never try and use their standards to measure them.

When is someone going to raise the issue of the Palin's using a four month old child as a prop? I find their continually bringing the child to large public gatherings appalling. All children under the age of one need to be protected from sensory overload; this is especially true for children with downs syndrome. I don't believe an arena filled with fifteen thousand screaming people a quiet, nurturing environment. Noone would ever take a child of that age to a rock concert; at least I hope they wouldn't.
  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
You are so right. She'll whore out all those kids before it's over...ambition trumps everything for Rethugs. Reminds me of those horrible, ubiquitous "My kid is an honor student" bumper stickers, meaningless bullshit.
  • MNUSA · 1 year ago
I never put the "My kid is an honor student" on the car and years later my son thanked me for not pasting it on the car. I did laugh, though, when I saw a bumper sticker that said "My kid beat up your honor student." (Says a lot about our culture.) Actually, kids should be encouraged and rewarded for studying hard in appropriate ways. My son's school gave out academic letters. He wouldn't wear it until he had earned one in basketball. There are no cheerleaders for honor students.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
    Exactly, particularly a Down baby.
No matter Caribou Agnew's pitch to the special needs crowd, anyone familiar with the subject knows "once your child is 3 years old, he or she is guaranteed educational services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)" and Sarah was promising something signed by the Decider on December 3, 2004.

Okay, I'LL raise it. Sarah Palin's children and how she raises them is NOBODY'S DAMNED BUSINESS!

Have you EVER seen the Republicans criticize Barack and Michelle Obama's role as parents. No, you haven't!

What makes the left think they have the right to publicly humiliate a 17-year old girl - then publicly stick its collective noses into a loving mother's relationship with her little baby. Is there NOTHING the left won't do to win this election? Have you not one ounce of American decency in you?

“I’d like to thank the elite media for doing something,” Huckabee said, “that, quite frankly, I didn’t think could be done: unify the Republican party and all of America in support of John McCain and Sarah Palin.”

He wishes. Those of us not happy with alternate universe news realize
    - the Infotainment Industry lied to us about the war,
    - about Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 04 when black people were denied the right to vote for the first time in 35 years
    - they pretended a substantial hunk of public opinion wanted the govt to intervene in the Schiavo case,
    - they wouldn't cover the telecom immunity debate
    - they don't talk about $400 million/day in Iraq
    - they don't talk about McCain dumping his first wife, or his flip flop on torture, or about Keating, or his growing incoherence and confusion
    - they played along with the swiftboaters and made John Kerry out as a coward
    - they wouldn't even mention the fact that a gay prostitute had the run of the White House
    - they unquestioningly parrot one GOP talking point after another, and set themselves against honest and fair discussions, as demonstrated by Chuck Todd's open mike
    - etc

We know they're not on our side, Huck. Their performance has been disgraceful from the moment they started pushing Ken Starr's pornography. But it's pretty obvious where the lines are drawn, and on whose behalf they've been performing. But keep slamming the media, ace. When they come back with the kid gloves treatment for McCain, it only reminds us how pathetic they are.

Great post in comments below. I copied and pasted it here so more people would read it re: RNC and "community organizers"

    Upland_Oddball wrote:

In 1992, the RNC turned ugly when Pat Buchanan roused it into a frenzy over his denunciatons of gays, feminists, and other targets of the Culture Wars. I didn't see the first few speakers so I don't know if the attack on and derision of Community Organiizers began with Huckabee or Romney, but I could see and hear it with Giuliani and Palin. It was ugly, petty and actually, downright FASCISTIC. That crowd and those speakers actually heaped scorn on those among us who turn down a life in corporate America to work with Strugglilng Ameriica. What is wrong with these people? Next thing they will hector little kids on the street for attempting to help old people cross the road. Ayn Rand meets and fucks Increae Mather, that is what happened in St. Paul tonight. She is so personally annoying, she sounds like a cross between the mayor of South Park and the Police officer in Fargo....."oh, Mr. terrorist, I think I'm gonna barf......how 'bout a cookie, there ooooatmeal"......

Well my friend here is the deal with Sarah Palin:

-Her First veto as Alaska's governor was to deny health benefits for the domestic partners of state employees. I guess those are the 'family values' that I keep hearing so much about.

She is all about pork barrel spending. She is the exact opposite from how she portrays herself. She was for and fought to get the bridge to nowhere built. When it was politically difficult, Alaska kept the money for other projects. Hardly a maverick. Sounds like business as usual.

She is a Pentecostal. Google the beliefs of Pentecostals, and prepare to be shocked. Do we want someone like that a heart beat away from the presidency?

I could go on forever about serious, thoughtful respectful disagreements, but at the end of the day my friend, if your president and elected officials were ACTIVELY treating you as a second class citizen (I happen to be gay) through their actions and laws, you too would be angry. In fact there would be rioting in the streets.

So forgive the vitriol, but sometimes you have to vent when among like minded company. Sarah Palin is dangerous, and woefully unqualified, in her temperament and experience.

I guess she did sleep at a Holiday Inn once...so perhaps I am wrong. :-)

Here's some reasons the media should apologize -- examples of bias:

    1. Have they ever asked if Obama is qualified? Show me a link to an interview or major news story.

    2. They mentioned that Palin's husband has a DUI. Have they mentioned that one of Obama's half-brothers in Kenya is a known terrorist?

    3. Obama talks a lot about help people with their credit problems. Where's the major news story about Biden's son working as a lobbyist for MBNA just before Congress made it tougher to get out of credit card debt?

The press is valid in asking about Palin's executive experience as long as they also ask about Obama.
  • nicho · 1 year ago
GO home -- your village wants its idiot back
  • Gorgonzola · 1 year ago
Bush had similar executive experience, now the country is in the shit hole.
  • AngryWriteMail · 1 year ago
To be more accurate, Sarah Palin's husband doesn't HAVE a DUI - he HAD a DUI - in 1984. That's 24 years ago - back when Barack Obama was snorting cocaine.

Yet you don't hear the Republicans raising the issue of his cocaine usage. To his credit he stopped using it many years ago. Barack was young, as was Palin's husband, and prone to dumb behavior, as most of us were at that age.

So, why is it so difficult for the DNC to behave with equal class? Perhaps it's because they've been skewing the polls, and are farther behind than they care to admit.
  • AngryWriteMail · 1 year ago
    From AmericaBlog's Conservative friend:

Yes, the media should apologize. They've held a 17 year-old girl to international ridicule. Had the Republican party done the same thing to a daughter of a Democrat candidate - All Hell would break loose.

Yes, the media should apologize. When has MSNBC or CNN ever held Barack Obama to the same arbitrary standards to which they hold Sarah Palin? Obama has been receiving a kid gloves free pass. It isn't the job of media to play District Attorney against one side and Public Defender to the other.. It is their job to report TRUTH and let the chips fall where they may.

Barack's Mile High Stadium speech appeared to have buried John McCain (at least I'm honest enough to admit the truth). Similarly, Sarah Palin cleaned Obama's clock last night - and nothing the biased liberal media and DNC can say is going to change that fact.

Perhaps my liberal friends can answer the question the media refuses to address: Name 3 things Barack Obama has accomplished that qualifies him to be America's Commander-In-Chief, especially in these perilous times.

If a garage mechanic had a similar amount of experience repairing vehicles - you wouldn't let him within 50 miles of your car.

These "rumors" predated her nomination. Is Alaska that far away that no one can find out what has been going on up here? Sarah chose to announce her daughter's "pregnancy" to cover up a far worse situation.

An assessment of 2008 Liberalism through Conservative eyes:

During the 1960s and '70s cultural revolution, American values were under attack from the Left (Not the Democrats of that time - the ULTRA-Left.
Some of these values were:Patriotism. Religion, Morality, Marriage, Family.

Today we call them Family Values, but not terribly long ago, these were America's Values.

Traditionalists, Conservatives, and mainstream Republicans believe America's shared values and institutions are under attack as never before by ultra-liberals, and that these ultra-liberals have taken over the Democrat party and control the seats of power in the media of America.

What they hope to replace these traditions with is a monolithic centralized federal government watching over a secular-humanist society. Under this type of society, the state makes its citizens subserviant to Big Daddy Government for all their basic needs. After a generation or two of this kind of society, Americans will be incapable of providing for themselves, making their own choices, charting their own course.

Barack Obama has already made it clear in his Berlin speach, that he intends to even the playing field between the great and powerful United States of America and all the other countries of the world. He told the Germans it isn't 'fair" for one country to command such a great economic advantage over the others.

Hear what he's saying, people: To accomplish this, he and the Democratically-controlled Congress will have to create an economic climate that is not in America's best interest. Well, it's a lot easier than trying to raise the economic standard of every other country on earth now, isn't it?

See, the DNC has got you so worked up in rage against George Bush you can't even see they've been hard at work destroying America's traditional values. It's all about Government Control. If the government gives you your inalienable rights (rather than God), if the government controls every aspect of your everyday life - then the government can "taketh away".
    Think about it.
