AMERICAblog: Wishful Drinking

  • smiling_dog · 1 year ago
You've never seen Postcards From the Edge?
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
    I didn't even know about it :-)
  • dacnova · 1 year ago
we had tickets to the previews, we opted out

But dont' listen to my opinion. I'm the only liberal that walked out of Jerry Springer because it wasn't funny. (I was OK with the offensive stuff)

Oh I can't wait to see that interview. That should be a hoot. I saw her on Graham Norton years ago and yes, she loves the gays. ;-) Thanks for some much needed levity.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Funny we should both use the word hoot.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
I read Postcards from the Edge several years ago....never saw the movie.

I like her honesty and her coming forward about bi-polar as well as her addictions.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Carrie Fisher is a hoot. Besides, she best know for playing Princess Leia.

"(had no clue she was Debbie Reynolds' and Eddie Fisher's daughter, or that she was married to singer Paul Simon - revoke my card"

Um, those would be reasons enough to revoke your gay card, but the fact that you have to refer to him as "singer Paul Simon" tells me you need to revoke any outside-the-Beltway cred you ever had, John! Especially since Paul Simon the congressman died almost 5 years ago.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Well, I remember someone in DC telling me a story about Paul Simon once, and i was like, oh my God you met Simon and Garfunkle Paul Simon - and they were like, uh, no the Senator, you moron.
  • chrislrob · 1 year ago
I'm not gay, but I'm pretty sure I have a small crush on Carrie Fisher. (Why does that sentence seem weird?) I still laugh at her saying that as a child she knew that her mother was beautiful but remember thinking that she herself looked like a toe.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
I just sent your comment to our reader who works with her on the show - I hope he shows her :-)

Glad you, Joe and company had a "swelligent" time. My day was largely ruined because while I was out getting routine medical treatment, the "Yes on Prop 8" people dropped by and left literature on my door here in Southern California. I had hoped to catch them in person. Becuase any violation of basic human rights is supposedly permissible nowadays if done for religious cause, I had a brand new stone table, an obsidian knife, and a ceremonial bowl waiting to welcome them as I singlehandedly bring back ancient MesoAmerican religious practice. Better luck next time.

Oh, let me come, video and then upload it on YOUTUBE!
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
I missed them when they came by last weekend here in Central Cal. I had a few choice words to share with them.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Carrie Fisher! Yes, John, we are revoking your gay card. It is a prerequisite to knowing all about Carrie if you were in junior high and gay when Star Wars premiered! What a great life experience to get to interview her. Hell, what a great life experience to go backstage to be with her and listen to her stories.

My sister Lauren and I saw this last Sunday and loved it. I did not know she had been with Paul Simon for 12 years. If you go to the arena stage web site and go to their blog, there are some interesting links including an interview on NPR and a you tube of Carrie's appearance on 30 Rock. You should definitely check them out before you interview her! And, duh, her second husband was gay. Didn't she mention she turns them gay and bald?
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
No wonder I love Carrie Fisher! I'm gay and bald.

Tropical Storm Ike is moving in... we are getting DRENCHED here in NorthEast Oklahoma and the wind is picking up. The satellite dish just went out on the ranch. No tee-vee but I have DSL and the phones still work.

    Take care, cowboy.

Saw it too and was equally pleased and loved the neighborhood the Lincoln theater was in. It was not only cathartic for her but for all of us who come from any kind of dysfunction, and very funny....
  • jpalmer · 1 year ago
Wife and I saw the show here in San Jose last month. It was just brilliant.
  • SusieQ · 1 year ago
Good Lord John. You need to get out of DC more often. And go someplace other than Paris. And Greece. First Charlize Theron, now Carrie Fisher. Any other gay icons you've never heard of?

Before you do the interview, please do watch some of her performances, plus read or see Postcards from the Edge and Shampoo.

Saw the show here at Berkeley Rep last winter. Hilarious. But, the funniest line of the night came from my German-born and raised husband (NOT Mr. Pop culture) who remarked at intermission while we were talking about the flow chart of all Debbie Reynolds'/Elizabeth Taylor's marriages--"You mean that all really HAPPENED?"
  • AdmNaismith · 1 year ago
Her ep of 30 Rock was just repeated Thur night, and she's a major Hollywood script doctor.

"I'm Betsy Faye Shannon, and I"m a bitch."

Love love LOVE her in Soapdish (everyone else too).
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
"The kind of woman every gay man would love." Hello?! She loves gay men so much, she has a kid with a member of the Velvet Mafia! Google: Bryan Lourd Carrie Fisher. (John: spend more time boning up on popular culture, man! It's relevant since (Vice)President Palin is a product of the machine!)
  • StephenGregorySmith · 1 year ago
While I have not yet seen Wishful Drinking (I NEED to ASAP), I just saw Sandra Bernhard's "Without You I'm Nothing" at Theatre J (16th and Q, NW) last night. Oh my God...while I was always a fan of hers, she absolutely blew me away. This is a revamped version of her classic show, AND YOU SHOULD HEAR the things she says about Sarah Palin!!!LOL! I was dying! You should really go to see her in this show, as the political content/commentary is high, scathing, and HILARIOUS! She would also make a great interview subject for Americablog!
  • IAmATVJunkie · 1 year ago
John, if you would read MY blog on occasion you might have some idea that stuff is going on all around you that you don't know about.]

Of course, you might not care that Janice Dickinson threw Kehoe out of the house last week or that David Tennant's RSC Hamlet sold out in a day, but it's all there for you.

And I've written about Carrie Fisher, too.

Always hoping she'll read something clever about herself and she'll invite me to her annual co-birthday party with Penny Marshall.

You haven't even read or seen Postcards from the Edge?

John, all that learnin' will fry yer brain!

Oh...I would LOVE to hear the Kennedy/Dodd stories!!!!! They must be good!

Years ago a good friend of mine, Karin (who is French) decided she wanted to meet all the major actors associated with Star Wars and was determined to accomplish this by practically stalking those actors on their visits to Paris. She approached the actors and told them of her "goal" and all were very kind and amused. She said the best of all of them was Carrie Fisher! She said Carrie loved her craziness and invited her to go shopping. An afternoon shopping with Carrie Fisher - how awesome would that be.
