AMERICAblog: WSJ: McCain to take nap before big debate

Without some drugs, how could anyone possibly nap before a presidential debate?????
Unless you KNOW you have the thing sewn up....

McCain is a masterdebater...

I would like to be a fly on the wall in the mock debate between McCain, who makes up stories about football teams, and Michael Steele, who makes up stories about being lynched with Oreo cookies.
KarenMrsLloydRichards
Steele hauled in just to get a 72 year-old white man accustomed to dealing with a black man on terms other than the airport shoeshine man or the apartment building doorman.

John, since when is Michael Steele a black man?
Its actually a hilariously absurd choice. And WTF is up with play Obama "and use many of his speaking patterns, tactics and body language." Is he gonna be doing Obama impressions?
KarenMrsLloydRichards
Yes, because in McCain World, all tall black men, with professional backgrounds and political careers, are totally indistinguishable from each other, and therefore interchangeable.
MalibuBarbie

Michael Steele is an empty suit with a good smile and a streak of ambition a mile wide. That's all McCain can see in Obama.

eb, these "handlers" of MCCain are no more in reality than the last episode of Promethieus and Bob

Looking at Rick Davis's background (he's a U of Alabama grad), it would be hard to call him "enlightened" on racial matters.

a nap??....would think that could make him groggy.....errrr.....foggier.

That's true, grandma, but McCain needs the beauty sleep.

I think he picked Steele so that if he falls asleep at the podium during rehearsals it will be easier for him to remember what he was doing.

I don't know which scares me most - a stiff shot of Bourbon before a stressful situation, ala Bush, or a nap.
Kansaskitty

Anyone noticed how McCain's eyes look weirdly wide open now - with a lot of blinking? Did he have eye tucks maybe or botox to make him LOOK alert? Instead he looks like a moose in the headlights!
KarenMrsLloydRichards

Recovery time from a Bob Dole eyelift too long (and too much bruising), My bet is on Botox an/or Restylane injections.
brb915

..........may be another affliction of his like dry eye or Macular Degeneration. I know folks with these disorders and they tend to blink alot.

You know, more and more evidence is mounting to suggest that McCain has Alzheimer's (and that it's already been diagnosed). He's seemingly forgetful where a few months ago he wasn't. He seems incoherent during interviews. He needs a nap before the debate.
People with Alzheimer's often experience more problems when they become fatigued, so it's very common for problems to become evident later in the day rather than earlier. To see if there is a correlation, I wonder if it would be useful to map out what time of day his gaffes have traditionally happened, or (since we know that some gaffes happened in the morning) what was his night before like, and was he still fatigued?
Of course, the campaign is never going to be forthright about any of this....
stevetalbert
He chose a black guy because all black guys have similar --- 'many of his speaking patterns, tactics and body language'. Plus he will be better able to remember who he is supposed to be debating.

John McCain believes that all black men can dance real nice too...

I never thought the day would come when I'd cut McCain some slack, but I love me some naps. I'm not even old. Of course, I've got the narcolepsy excuse, but I never begrudge someone a nap attack---he'd better hope the cats don't walk on his iHome and turn off the alarm. Well, he probably has people to come wake him up and I don't know that he has cats (and probably doesn't know how to work an iPod or iHome), but given the choice of shooting hoops and taking a nap, I'm picking the nap. I'm very good at that, but have never made a basket. God help the person who interrupts my nap...and with McCain's temper? He might have the conniption of a lifetime if he doesn't get his nap out. So on second thought, let's hope he doesn't get a nap. Or at least hope for eye crusties.
cowboyneok
Its not about cutting McCain slack, its about attacking ANY perceived weakness the way Republicans have done Democrats FOREVER. Is this attack totally fair? Probably not. Doesn't matter... when have Republicans been fair about perceived negatives of candidates? For instance, when have Republicans backed off the meme Obama is a muslim outrageous crap? Anything, and I mean ANYTHING, should be fair game to take McSame down because you better believe they are throwing the kitchen sink at Obama.

I guess they chose Michael Steele because Alan Keyes (the other black republican) is himself running for President as head of the Batsh*t Party.

McCain "will host a town-hall event and take a short nap"
are these concurrent activities??? I know his townhalls have that effect on the folks who attend them, but isn't the candidate actually supposed to be awake for these events, or has he decided that since everyone else is napping it'd be a good time to catch some z's himself??

baby needs a nap..
It's a very good comparison. One candidate needs a nap before a debate, and the other will work out beforehand.
Oh, and why did the Obama campaign agree to the "lets protect Palin" debate format???
KarenMrsLloydRichards
It's no surprise he would do a town hall before. That's the format he's supposed to be so "brilliant" at and so "comfortable" with. Yet all does he spout confused talking points in front of handpicked seniors, so it's hardly going to put him on his mettle. Don't be surprised if we see him wearing a "hearing aid" on Friday for the first time. Check the wires!

Just the sound of McCain's voice makes me want to nap. In fact just thinking about McC makes me tired.

Google Sundowning. Some older people often "sundown" during the afternoon. They can be as sharp as a tack in the morning but quite confused by evening. It's an early indicator of Alzheimer's.

When we had to send my grandmother to a nursing home for rehabilitation, she had started with Sundowners. She would be fine until about sunset and then WHAMMO! WHACK CITY! Its really bad. Someone please just kill me if I EVER, EVER get that way. I'm talking pillow over my head, or give me a "shot" to put me down... its bad.

John, come on! I'm as pro Obama as you are, but I can see why McCain chose an African American to practice with. I can't believe you made that comment while ignoring that Obama chose one of his few gray-haired advisers for his practice.
I won't comment on whether I think either campaign made a wise choice to publicize the choices. I'm rather divided as it makes one look racist and the other ageist. On the other hand, I'm also not a fan of 99.9% of political debates I studied debate in college and can see how they're preparing themselves. However, because I studied debate (and won my finals using the same evidence for the Pro and Con side of the same issue) I rarely watch the presidential "debates".
The few moments I've seen over the last 20+ years are nowhere near the rules of actual debate. They're all drama and emotion, tactics that would have made me fail my debate course in college. (The single and team debates in my final showed this; I used facts, opponents tried to make up facts and use emotion; unanimous win solo and team debate...)
They're more live advertisements than debate. And I've been very sad about that for a very long time. I'd watch a REAL debate, but I'm not holding my breath.

Why is taking a nap an issue? Lots of healthy, happy, intelligent people nap. Crude mockery like this doesn't deserve a whole post, IMO.
What would you say if Obama was planning to take a nap that day?
cowboyneok
Nonsense. The post points our and drives home the whole "old and tired" meme. Any Democrat should not have to apologize for not being sensitive enough to Republican candidates? Democrats have lost WAYYYyyyyy too many elections trying to be sensitive to the Republican's feelings while getting our asses kicked by ruthless Rovian politics. Sorry, but I think the idea John McCain's camp would broadcast he needs a nap before the debate is a MISTAKE and should be called out.
Also, mockery has always been Republicans to Democrats 10 to 1, so again no apologies needed. I say MOCK away! We have a lot of catching up to do, and the undecided voters need something to chew on. The undecided voters who swing elections sure as hell don't respond to policy so give them something they understand!

Will McSCUM throw his own feces at some time during the debate to slow Barack's momentum?
Likelihood: 54%

I agree when you say it's interesting that McCain chose a black man to play Obama. But, when you consider McCain voted against recognizing 'Martin Luther King Day' holiday, he knows he needs practice looking a black man in the eye.

One little-remarked aspect of college football (bear with me, please) is the *depth* of a team. Of course the most obvious effect of a team having good depth is that injuries don't result in a lot of talent drop-off.
But a deeper and more important aspect of depth is the practices that take place 5 times a week. When your starters are practicing against people damn near as good as they are, they're in a FAR better position come Saturday than a team who's starters - let them be supposed to as good as the other team's starters - are practicing against lesser 2nd-teamers. When you practice against better people, your improvement is FAR more pronounced than someone who practices against scrubs. Abstractly, it becomes a situation of the rich get richer, and the middle class get poorer.
That's what the situation surrounding the candidates' practice opponents sounds like to me. Even if we supposed - contrary to actual fact - that Obama and McPOW were equal talents in themselves, even the briefest look at their sparring partners' bios shows a VAST difference in their talent levels. Under the false supposition - which is extremely gracious to McLiar, the end result of such a hideous choice of sparring partner would naturally tend to be that he'd end up worse off than Obama.
But the supposition is, of course false. In actual fact, McDirt is starting off the blocks a few pints short of a gallon, while Obama overfloweth. Thus adjusted, McNounVerbPOW might literally end up brain-dead (the only way he could be any stupider), while Obama will end up even sharper than he already is (it's almost *unfair* - lol).
In college football, of course, the coach doesn't really have a choice about who his starters practice against. You go into practice with the 2nd string you have, and not the 2nd string you wish you had, as it were. But this is not the situation with McAdulterer. Although they're uniformly evil, there are a fair number of very bright and talented debtaters he could have chosen from - hell, Rove himself would've been an excellent choice to *improve* McPanderer's debating abilities.
While certainly his choice of a *black* sparring partner is tied up with his (and his party's) inability to see anything more than Average Leroy Black when they look at Obama, I think there must also have been a conscious *requirement* on Mc13Cars' part TO NOT SPAR WITH ANYONE WHO COULD SHOW HIM UP.
There might be various reasons for this: simple vanity (likely), not wanting to get McFlipFlop's spirits down before the debate, and so forth. But whatever the precise components of the vector-sum of rationales might be, it seems clear to me that Obama will be about as well-off as he can be going into the debates, and McLoser about as poorly off as he could be.
