AMERICAblog: Yet another reason I like Obama

"it's better to get brain damage from hitting your head on the pavement than to wear a bike helmet. Wearing a bike helmet must be a Muslim thing"-cable news
  • shell · 1 year ago
I think most Republicans HAVE gotten brain damage from not wearing a helmet. If not from that, then what? Because they ARE brain damaged.
  • nonpartisandebate · 1 year ago
It's critical that we make fun of McCain's freaky looks, age, and disabilities (as John has done). We need to reach the young people in order to win this election and they communicate on a whole new level that oldsters might consider politically incorrect (eg "that's so gay").
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
The truth hurts, Madame Troll. We're poking fun of the fact that McCain is simply too old to be president of the United States of America during war time. His disability has nothing to do with a picture of him riding an old bike. Good try though.
  • hopelesspedant · 1 year ago
John - seriously, why do you take issue with dissent and call someone who disagrees with you automatically a troll? You never used to be like this before.
My first thought - and I loathe the idea of McCain becoming president, it might prompt me to leave the country - is that he likely can't ride a bike because of his sensibilities. And even if you think as humor it is still fair game, isn't it possible that harping on things like this could end up helping McCain?
There are few of your readers who have checked in as much as I have here over the last four years +, but I find myself now worried that any contrary post is going to make you call me a troll. And that isn't something loyal readers and posters should need to worry about.
  • hopelesspedant · 1 year ago
    Sorry, meant injuries, not sesibilities.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Because if you actually had experience running an online community, like I have for ten years now, you'd be able to smell a troll a mile away. You should see our monitors. Took them all of 3 weeks to learn how to smell a troll from their very first comments. This one was easy. New commenter, never posted before, accusing me of making fun of disabilities, and throwing in a gay smear to boot. That's not disagreeing. That's troll-ish behavior. And as for me, I've been ripping people's heads off for years when I feel they cross the line. :-)

Good for Obama! I'd rather he looked like "Urkel" than suffer brain damage. Americans are so obsessed with their vanity...

Meanwhile, speaking of McBush, he cancels fundraiser with idiot Texan but keeps the money...

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080614/ap_on_el_pr...

And his memory is becoming an issue for the campaign, too, since he doesn't seem to remember that moron saying such an egregious thing about rape. (Personally, I'd like to tie that bastard up and let a horse penetrate him. See what he thinks of women being raped then.) And ask him if he "enjoyed" it.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
Excuse me? Someone wanted to make some kind of fucking issue over a bike helmet? What planet are they on? We've all been wearing them about twenty years after hearing stories of kids and adults hitting their heads on pavement and either dying or having horrendous brain damage. The only people who let their kids ride their bikes WITHOUT head gear are the same white trash idiots who also vote for candidates like Dubbya because they really believe that idiots like that will keep fags from getting married. No attention paid to things like 5 Trillion pissed away in Iraq. Just shit like gun rights and fag marriage and god.

I am sick of this Maureen Dowd crap. She talked about how Gore and Kerry were pansies for some reason. Why are the Dems always feminized and the Repukes are real tough guys. Remember bush the cowboy? Now McSame is tough, straight talker war hero while Obama is Urkel and elite! Where is this coming from, this is gossip news. I hate this programming they do, and Americans fall for it!!!!
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
man i hate that crap too.

you oughta read Glen Greenwald's latest book...Great American Hypocrites...he dissects this very issue, how the right has created these false archetypes and everyone has bought it, that dems are weak elitists and GOPers are brave, strong moral warriors...when 9 times out of 10 the opposite is true.

Greenwald says instead of getting on the defensive and saying "dems are tough too" we should start attacking the GOPers for the hypocrites they are. call bullshit every time. i think we're doing it.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
I don't see the problem. Then again, I live in a city where I see that all the time.

He actually looks pretty natural to me. (Dukakis didn't look natural.)
  • Hangtown Danile · 1 year ago
Is there a better pic of this? I would like to see the brand names of his bike and helmet so I can better understand his taste in this area. Or somebody who knows the brand of bike he is on?
He is using a helmet be no gloves. Gloves are not to make you look "cool" they are to protect your hand from in a fall. Road Rash heals well every place but on the hands...
Falling lessons are hard ones to learn...

I think Sen. Obama looks rather upscale, urban and "with it" in this picture. Healthy habit, helmet, regular person jeans. If more of us did more of what he's doing in the picture maybe the 32% of our youth who are obese might be a little more healthy (in 1950 children drank 3 cups of milk to one cup of soda, today that number is reversed, for example).
Sen. Obama is going the direction that our entire nation needs to go. He is a leader for our new century and I couldn't be more proud.

Great-grampa McSame, well...it just goes without saying.

    Obama '08!

Wonder if McCrazy is going to ride his big bike in the Fourth of July parade.

Elitist! He wears his shirt tucked into his pants on a bike ride! With a belt! And he probably drank orange juice instead of coffee that morning! Where, or where is Tim Russert now to chide him about this? And whether he would accept Louis Farrakhan's support?!
  • shell · 1 year ago
I looked at the picture ... and couldn't find one thing wrong with it. The wingnuts must have steamed when they saw it. Trying their hardest to find something to criticize. He looks like 90% of Americans, out riding their bikes. Poor wingnuts! Having pictures like this to desperately find fault with! It's gonna be a looooong 4 months for the poor things. I predict that by the end of October, at least half will have either had heart attacks, or nervous breakdowns. Keep it up, Obama!
  • galore · 1 year ago
Anyone who makes fun of people wearing bicycle helmets should get their head examined. My husband was in a week long coma and almost died because he didn't wear a helmet when he hit his head in a low-speed bicycle crash. I would NEVER EVER ride a bicycle without a helmet. NEVER!
  • KISSman · 1 year ago
Oh man, I loved everything he said there!

He did the right thing, made the right point and he summed it up with a self-depreciating zinger to close it out. The Urkel line literally made me LOL!

    Obama is awesome.
  • BuddyNovinski · 1 year ago
Hey, shouldn't McCain also be wearing a helmet? It's a long fall off that bicycle.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I'd be concerned if he was not wearing a helmet. As is, the photo shows a healthy, sensible American out for a bike ride. That's cool. In fact, it's awesome!
  • ChicagoKid · 1 year ago
    McInsane rides with training wheels.
  • ChicagoKid · 1 year ago
Doesn't anybody remember the number of times as prez "W" has wipedout on his bike? Too many times to count.
  • ChicagoKid · 1 year ago
OT: McCain says he won't give back money raised by rape-supporting fundraiser!?!? WTF!!! Where the MSM on this one?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/14/mccain...

Will Grampie McCain next take money from David Duke?
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Yeah, and how about those Hillary Supporters showing up the misogynists by voting for McCain?

    Joking about rape?

    OK.

    Running against Hillary?

    Now you're being sexist.
  • IAmATVJunkie · 1 year ago
I'd hate to think that you have to remind people who Urkel is, John.

I've always felt bad for the guy, does he only get to be Urkel in his lifetime? He didn't have his stardom in the age of Hannah Montana where you can bank away a lifetime of cash.

I'm sure he's doing just fine, but what of career fulfillment for Jaleel White? Does he indeed only get to be Urkel for the rest of his life?

And, is he an Obama supporter?
  • Hannah · 1 year ago
galore and others are correct: it is imperative to wear a helmet while riding. As galore stated, one can sustain serious head injuries even if riding slowly. My hubby ended up with "only" a severely separated shoulder and minor "roadrash" when a truck turned right in front of him. His head bounced off the pavement, the helmet cracked but his head did not.

All the time I see parents riding with kids... the kids are wearing helmets, the parents are not. So what happens to those kids if the parent is hit or falls and either dies or is seriously injured because he/she didn't wear a helmet?

Good for Obama (and, give him credit, bush) for wearing a helmet!
  • Hannah · 1 year ago
IAmATVJunkie: Jaleel White had a guest spot on IIRC Boston Legal this past season. I didn't realize who it was for a while since I missed his name in the opening credits but the guy was sooooooo familar. Anyhow he did a good job. Hope he gets more work...

OK, so I goggled White and discovered he was the subject of an internet rumor in 2006 that he had committed suicide. I'd not heard that one. Here's an article with quotes from a very-much-alive White (and a more current photo): http://www.eurweb.com/story/eur28795.cfm
  • vwcat · 1 year ago
Funny how that pic of Obama cuts it off to look like he is riding a single bike. It's actually a bicycle for two with his daughter on the back end of it.
    Love the pic of McShame.
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
what a great way of saying to the OIL COMPANIES aka CORPORATE WELFARE JERKS that we are not going to let you make more money from us!

I'm going to start bicylcing to work and NOT wasting my money on $5 gas. let's see - been savings from getting out of TimeWarnerCable. Add the MANY dollars from NOT spending on gas to go to work. Yeah bicycles!

Oh, and paying my credit card on time (NO interest going to the credit card companies).

I think I'm beating corporate America big time on their own game!
    :-)

    Me too!

    Thanks!
  • Asterix · 1 year ago
Surely someone could have found a bike to fit Obama. This one's too small--look at how his left leg is bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Still, photo-ops is photo-ops...you take them where you can get them.
