AMERICAblog: You have to meet Congressional candidate, Tony Woods, who was discharged under Don't Ask, Don't Tell

  • Calid · 5 months ago
Good luck to Tony! Vote every damn incumbent out!
  • jharp · 5 months ago
    Best to you, Tony Woods.

You are a courageous man. And exactly the type we need in Congress.
  • RyansTake · 5 months ago
It would be amazing to get this guy into office. I hope people who live in California, nearby, reading this will volunteer - and I hope anyone who can afford it will donate. Send your money to this guy, not the DNC. What a great candidate! Impeccable credentials, great story and seem someone who understands what it's like to struggle in this country, yet excel nonetheless.
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
Does that mean he didn't fly into DC to go to the fundraiser Joe and John built a line around? That seems like the most logical explanation as to why he came to DC to me. I really want to know if they told us not to support anyone or any group that attends, but then promoted an attendee.
  • Blueflash · 5 months ago
Wow. Seems pretty impressive. I contributed. Military background and, even more importantly, African American - just the kind of openly gay man we need in prominent positions to explode the cynical stereotypes conservatives use against us.
  • terrya · 5 months ago
THIS is when the GayTM's are open for business. I've read about Tony Woods...he would make a superb addition to the US House.
  • Kim Buoy · 5 months ago
Great article Joe and what a great candidate, totally contribution-worthy. Without this blog, I would had never been aware of his candidacy. Hope he wins.
  • mirth · 5 months ago
I'm impressed, and I definitely want to know more about him.

Echoing Calid just below...all incumbents, OUT!
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
Was one of those several events he is to attend the fundraiser you've been so vocal about? I need to know the answer to that question before I decide if I want to help him or not.
  • Indigo · 5 months ago
That's a fair question. Any answer, anybody?
  • Jim Olson · 5 months ago
    Petey is too easy. ;)
  • Greg1A · 5 months ago
Yes, this is where my escrowed DNC dollars are headed.

*I* will decide who gets my donation so there is a clear bright line of cause and effect. I will not let Nancy and the other executives of the DNC ("Do-Nothing Committee") be the face attached to the money.

*I* will be the face attached to the money.
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
I hope *you* will ask the tough questions and only send *your* money to some one who will not cross *your* picket line.... Even if it is a Democrat.
  • mirth · 5 months ago
I wish I could give you a Not Like for this comment, Jophus.
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
I respect that, mirth. I've always respected what you write. If you can convince me it is ok for a progressive candidate to go to the fundraiser I will make a small donation. I promise. Just please read all of my comments on this post. I'm sincerely not trying to be a dick right now.

I apologize for the mockery, because that was out of line.
  • mirth · 5 months ago
Jophus, I haven't read the whole thread, but I did read Joe's post and I saw no mention that Woods is in DC for the fundraiser.

Your apology for the dickness should be to Greg1A.
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
I just accidently posted my reply to this in the wrong spot. I don't want to waste space and paste it here, but I hope you read it.

I genuinely appreciate you calling me out even though I obviously view the subject differently.
  • mirth · 5 months ago
    Thanks, Jophus. I'll reply there.
  • spazzymcgee · 5 months ago
I hate to end the speculation but...:)

Tony was in D.C. for his own fundraisers this week--last night with Richard Clarke, and another one tonight.

    Per his facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=71643131...
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
Thanks. I'm going to make a donation now.

I'm glad I'm wrong, but it is really disappointing that some people would be willing to overlook it, if he went to the DNC event. It was a valid question.
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
    ---------This was intended for mirth---------
I read the post too. My entire adult life has been under the Bush administration. I am VERY skeptical when someone tells me something. When I hear he flew into DC for several events, and the largest event going on is the DNC gay party, red flags go up. That is exactly the kind of language one would use if they were trying to lie through omission.

Spazzymcgee provided a link I am going to check out that lists his calender (I think). Once I am certain he is not at the event, I will make a small donation. I hope that anyone who was rubbed the wrong way will accept that as an apology. However, I wish everyone would be a little more skeptical before supporting a candidate.

I don't want another generation to graduate and enter a world full of hate and violence, like I did, all because I wasn't willing to ask hard questions. That is dangerously irresponsible.
  • spazzymcgee · 5 months ago
Jophus--more on his event tonight here: http://www.actblue.com/page/dclgbtforwoods
  • mirth · 5 months ago
J, one thing we longtime ABers know is that Joe does not lie in his posts, straightup or by omission. So none of us suspected that. No harm in you asking - we all should be more skeptical with pols who want a ride on the public gravy train - but since then spazzymcgee has confirmed that Woods is in DC for his own fundraising events and provided links to support that.

My original comment, that I wished I could dun you, was for mocking the writing style of Greg1A. That was beneath you and may have caused Greg embarrassment.

    End o' story.

Let's kiss and make up. K?
  • Blueflash · 5 months ago
Really, you are short-sighted if you can't see what a congressman like this could do for us. He can drink all the champagne in DC he wants for all I care and he'll still be a constant refutation to the ugly ( but effective) conservative rhetoric that gays are just a bunch of rich spoiled sissy whites with nothing else to gripe about.
  • Jophus · 5 months ago
We vote differently then, my friend. I want to put people in office who will change the party from within. If they cross the gay community before being elected, what makes you think they won't comprise their values when a real vote comes up?

If he isn't going to the event, then great. However I'm not going to just have blind faith in someone's words and life story. Obama had a great story I fell for, and I won't do it again. I look like the bad guy here, but at least I'm asking questions. I'm not going to vote for someone because they are gay or because they are black. I certainly will not give money to someone who crosses my picket line.

That question also speaks to the credibility of the blog as well. I love this blog but if I wanted to influenced by duplicitous people, I'd be on a Republican blog (if in fact he is at the the DNC party).
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
I like your "Do-Nothing-Committee" for the DNC.
  • dday · 5 months ago
I actually did the very first interview with Anthony Woods, from before he became a candidate. Read here:

We are constantly told that Obama is much too busy with the economy, health care, quitting smoking, the death of Michael Jackson etc... Even Barney Frank used that argument today on Signorile's radio show. Yet what issue is more important than stopping the unjust termination of the livelihood of these successful gay soldiers?
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
Barney Frank is becoming an has-been. Because of his own pigheadedness, he snorts and grunts the party line.
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
I want to know why Obama is too busy to deal with such an important NATIONAL SECURITY issue?!!! Don't we need "all hands on deck," and especially those like Lt. Dan Choi who are arabic translators? I guess the Obama Admin would rather explain why homophobia was more important than national security if we ever get hit again because we can't keep up with the human intelligence?
  • AR_HillBilly · 5 months ago
Even though I live in Arkansas, I want to contribute my political dollars only to people like Tony. However, since his online contributions go through the ActBlue Democratic PAC, I was rather hesitant to give (how much of my contribution goes to Tony, and how much to the PAC?).

It took a little digging, but everything I've been able to find leads me to believe that 100% of the contribution (minus the exact fee charged by the bank to process the credit card payment) goes to Tony. Of course, ActBlue does ask for an additional contribution to their general PAC fund, but you can simply decline.

Thank you, Joe, for bringing this young man to our attention.
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
Hope he makes it. How will Obama look this decent person in the face and still deny him rights? Obama never had to fight for his country yet, he decides that this fellow is not good enough to serve because he is gay? Even after two tours of duty. What's wrong with this picture?!
  • lark83 · 5 months ago
Hey, thats my district! He is appearing tomorrow night in Davis, just 8 miles from my house. I think I'll go check him out. Maybe tell some of my liberal UU church friends about him.
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
Not only that, but JUST THINK what kind of message it would be for all the MONEY that normally would be going to the DNC goes to fund his campaign!!!

I just removed myself from the DNC fundraising e-mails with a message, "Until a STOP LOSS EXECUTIVE ORDER is issued by the President, and movement on Don't Ask / Don't Tell, DOMA and ENDA the gAyTM is closed!"

I will be sending him $20.00 NOW! I urge others to send him the money you've saved by NOT giving to the DNC. Lets send a ME$$AGE!
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
DONE! I just gave him $25.00 (plus 1% tip) that would have gone to the DNC. Whenever I get a fundraising request from NOW ON, I'm giving to him...

    Your contribution:
    Anthony Woods -- $25.00
    ActBlue Federal Tips -- $1.25
    Total: $26.25

Is there an issue section? If not he needs one. I'm sold on putting more of our people in, but he needs to be sold to donors.
  • ehappyday · 5 months ago

Petey is getting big. I was just given a 5 or 6 month old cocker spaniel pup named Toby. He is black and white and reminds me of my other cocker spaniel that died at the age of 15. They are really a good breed. Your Petey looked like my Sammy that died. They are such good friends to have around.

I think it's great that Tony is taking a run at office. But the Don't ask Don't tell policy was invented by our own Bill Clinton. It's not a military policy. It's a federal legislation that Clinton put in place. So if we are going to bitch, we need to do so at Obama. He is the one that can change it. Also, I have read articles stating that Woods received his West point and Harvard education through the military and was able to get out while he still owed several years to tax payers. Is Clinton's policy doing him wrong? Or is Mr. Woods getting away with two degrees from our best universities and without finishing his time? Sure seems like Tony Woods is getting off scott free if you ask me. I'd rather take advantage of the system and get a Harvard degree, than have to go to the middle east. EL
